Ponant Explorations Group and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) have launched an open-access collection of Arctic and Antarctic images.
The Polar Ocean Image Collection, part of the Ocean Image Bank by Ocean Agency, features more than 500 photographs taken by over 30 photographers, including the photo team of Ponant, and is intended for non-commercial use.

According to the cruise company's press release, the project aims to raise awareness about the challenges facing polar regions, support scientific research, and inspire action to protect them.
“The ocean remains one of our greatest sources of wonder — and at the same time one of the least explored. We believe science and education are most effective when experienced firsthand, where data and imagery together can spark curiosity and accelerate awareness of the importance of change,” said Samuel Chamberlain, CEO of Ponant Americas.
“Through our collaboration with WHOI, the world's most remote waters are becoming a ‘living classroom'. By having direct opportunities to observe research and real-time data collection onboard, our guests gain a rare insight into the scientific process and become part of the story unfolding around them.”

The cruise company is also collaborating with WHOI to implement next-generation technologies on selected vessels in support of research, conservation, and discovery..jpg)
This includes:
RESQ Robot — an underwater robot designed for low-impact ecosystem observation, making its debut this summer aboard Le Soléal in the Kimberley region.
Ice Link Sphere — an early prototype using a new approach to ice sensor design, enabling observations in remote environments. It was first deployed aboard Le Commandant Charcot in Antarctica late last year and will continue to be tested by scientists onboard the vessel.
Whale Spotter Camera — an infrared camera powered by artificial intelligence that can detect whales at distances of up to three nautical miles and alert the ship. The latest version of the camera was first installed aboard Le Commandant Charcot in April 2026.
In addition, oceanographers from WHOI will join Ponant Explorations on the immersive expedition “Antarctica: Ocean (Re)Imagined”, which will sail roundtrip from Ushuaia, Argentina, from December 7 to 17, 2027 aboard Le Lyrial. Guests on this voyage will be able to submit their own photographs for consideration in the Polar Ocean Image Collection.
