Epidemic on board: around 150 people cannot leave the vessel due to a dangerous virus

Off the coast of Cape Verde, the cruise ship MV Hondius has found itself in an extremely difficult situation.

A hantavirus outbreak is suspected on board. At least three fatal cases and several severe ones have already been recorded.

At the same time, according to preliminary information, the incident is not directly linked to staying on board the vessel. The probable cause is attributed to factors outside the ship — in particular, possible contact with wildlife during shore excursions.



Timeline of events on board Hondius (Oceanwide Expeditions):

April 11 — a passenger died on board (cause not established).
April 24 — the body of the deceased was transported to Saint Helena Island for further repatriation, accompanied by his wife.
April 27 — the wife of the deceased died during the return (both were citizens of the Netherlands).
April 27 — another passenger became seriously ill and was evacuated to the Republic of South Africa.
After evacuation — the patient is in intensive care in Johannesburg, his condition is critical but stable; a hantavirus variant has been confirmed (a citizen of the United Kingdom).
May 2 — another passenger died (a citizen of Germany, cause not established).
As of now — two crew members have respiratory symptoms (mild and severe cases) and require medical assistance.
At present — no new symptomatic cases have been identified; hantavirus has been confirmed only in the evacuated passenger.
The vessel — is located off the coast of Cape Verde.
On board — 149 persons, representatives of 23 nationalities.

The first to die was a 70-year-old passenger. Later, his wife died. Another passenger also died; his identity is currently being уточнюється.
A citizen of the United Kingdom is in critical condition, and two more crew members urgently require medical assistance. It is not excluded that the number of infected may be higher.

The vessel has requested assistance; however, passengers are not yet allowed to disembark. Local authorities and the World Health Organization have already joined the situation and are addressing the evacuation of the sick.

Hantavirus is a rare but dangerous infection that is most often transmitted from rodents. The disease can have a severe course and affect the respiratory system.

Such cases once again remind us: contact with wild animals or their habitats may be associated with increased biological risks. Even indirect exposure — through surfaces, dust, or enclosed spaces — can become a source of dangerous infections.
