About Windstar Cruises
Windstar Cruises is a boutique small-ship cruise operator that combines the atmosphere of a private yacht journey with world-class service. The fleet includes six ships of two types: elegant sailing yachts of the Wind Class and modern all-suite mega-yachts of the Star Plus Class. With capacities ranging from 148 to 342 guests, Windstar offers an intimate atmosphere, access to smaller ports, and itineraries that are often inaccessible to larger ships.
The company’s programs cover the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, the Caribbean and Central America, the Panama Canal, the Pacific Ocean, and its signature destination – French Polynesia, where Windstar sails year-round. Onboard, guests enjoy unique features such as the Open Bridge, a stern-side Marina with complimentary watersports, a relaxed casual-elegant dress code, and award-winning dining created in partnership with the James Beard Foundation.
The experts at Four Gates Group will help you choose the ideal ship and itinerary, explain the details of service, dining, and excursions, and arrange flights and hotels before or after your cruise.
Company History
The story of Windstar Cruises is the story of a bold idea: to create an alternative to large cruise ships and give guests the experience of sailing as if on a private yacht. It all began in 1984, when the company Windstar Sail Cruises was founded. The first ships – Wind Star (1986), Wind Song (1987), and Wind Spirit (1988) – surprised the industry: elegant sailing vessels carrying only about 150 guests, with the atmosphere of a private club and the ability to call at ports inaccessible to larger ships.
In 1989, the company was acquired by Holland America Line and rebranded as Windstar Cruises. During this period, the fleet welcomed its future flagship – Wind Surf (1998). It became the largest sailing cruise ship in the world, accommodating more than 300 guests, and it still remains the iconic symbol of Windstar today.
In the early 2000s, Windstar changed ownership several times. In 2007, it was sold to Ambassadors International, but soon faced financial difficulties. The brand, however, was saved – in 2011, it was acquired by Xanterra Travel Collection (part of Anschutz Corporation). This marked a new chapter focused on expanding the fleet and upgrading the product.
A breakthrough came in 2014-2015, when Windstar purchased three Star-class mega-yachts from Seabourn – Star Pride, Star Breeze, and Star Legend. These ships complemented the sailing fleet with a new all-suite experience: spacious staterooms and suites, many with balconies, along with more restaurants and leisure areas. The fleet essentially doubled, and Windstar secured its position as a leader in the small-ship sector.
The next milestone was the Star Plus Initiative (2018-2022). Each Star-class yacht was “stretched” with a 25.6-meter midsection, increasing capacity from 212 to 312 guests. The ships received new restaurants (Cuadro 44, Star Grill), a redesigned spa, a modern fitness center, new pools, and expanded open decks. Environmental upgrades included new fuel-efficient engines that comply with the latest international emissions standards.
In 2021, Windstar moved its headquarters from Seattle to Miami – the heart of the global cruise industry and a key hub for Caribbean itineraries.
A particularly important part of Windstar’s history is French Polynesia, where the company has been operating for more than 35 years. The sailing yacht Wind Spirit and the mega-yacht Star Breeze sail 7-14 night voyages, showcasing Tahiti’s lagoons, beaches, and culture.
Today, Windstar is looking to the future: for the first time in its history, the company has ordered brand-new builds. The Star Seeker will debut in 2025, followed by the Star Explorer in 2026. Each will carry 224 guests in 112 suites, most with verandas or panoramic infinity windows. This marks a turning point, as Windstar previously acquired secondhand ships – now it is building the next generation of its fleet.

Documents & Embarkation
What documents are required to board a Windstar cruise?
All guests must have a valid passport that remains valid for at least six months after the cruise ends. Some destinations also require a visa, so it’s important to check entry requirements for your specific itinerary. For example, a Schengen visa is needed for certain European cruises, while an electronic permit may be required for Australia or New Zealand.
Can I travel with just a national ID card?
No. Even if your cruise begins and ends in the same port, Windstar requires a passport. This is due to international regulations and the fact that itineraries often include multiple countries.
When does embarkation open?
Check-in usually begins several hours before departure and closes about an hour before the ship sails. Exact times vary by port, but it is recommended to arrive 2-3 hours in advance to complete formalities and enjoy your first glass of champagne onboard.
What if my flight is delayed and I miss embarkation?
If you are running late, you must contact Windstar or your travel advisor immediately. The team will try to arrange late boarding if possible, or assist with joining the ship at the next port.
Can I bring my own alcohol onboard?
Guests are allowed to bring up to two bottles of wine or champagne per stateroom. These may be enjoyed in your cabin without charge. If you bring them to a restaurant or bar, a small corkage fee applies. Hard liquor is not permitted.
Booking & Cancellations
Can I change or transfer my booking?
No. Reservations are non-transferable and issued in the name of the confirmed guest. Name changes after confirmation are not permitted.
What is the cancellation policy?
The closer to departure, the higher the penalty. Months in advance, partial refunds are possible, but within a week of sailing, most of the fare is non-refundable. We strongly recommend travel protection.
Does Windstar offer travel protection?
Yes. The Travel Protection Plan covers trip cancellation or interruption, flight delays, medical expenses, hospitalization, emergency evacuation, and baggage loss. It can be purchased at booking or up to 90 days before sailing.
Are children allowed onboard?
Yes, but only from age 8 and above. There are no childcare services or kids’ clubs. The atmosphere is designed for mature travelers.
Health & Safety
Do I need a COVID-19 test before boarding?
No. Windstar does not require testing unless mandated by the country of embarkation or destination.
Is vaccination required?
Vaccination is not mandatory, but strongly recommended for your safety and peace of mind.
What happens if I get sick during the cruise?
There is a 24/7 medical center onboard staffed with a doctor and nurse. Rapid testing may be performed if needed. In serious cases, evacuation to the nearest port is arranged. All medical expenses and transport are the guest’s responsibility, which is why insurance is essential.
What air filtration systems are used on board?
All staterooms and public areas are equipped with modern HEPA filtration and UV-C disinfection systems to ensure clean, safe air.
How often is cleaning carried out?
Public areas are sanitized at least twice a day, while high-touch surfaces are cleaned more frequently. Staterooms receive daily service, with towel changes and regular linen replacement.
Are sanitizers available onboard?
Yes. Hand sanitizer stations are located at restaurant and bar entrances, near gangways, and in main public areas.

Is there a dress code?
There are no formal nights. The style is “casual-elegant”: light dresses, shirts, and relaxed yet refined attire. No tuxedos or gowns are required.
Is there a casino onboard?
No. Windstar focuses on a relaxed, yacht-like atmosphere, culinary experiences, and itineraries, not on casinos or large-scale shows.
Is Wi-Fi available?
Yes, but it is not included in the base fare. Wi-Fi can be purchased separately or as part of the All-Inclusive package. Connection quality depends on the itinerary and satellite coverage.

Accessibility
Is Windstar suitable for guests with limited mobility?
