A Ukrainian’s attentiveness helped save people during a cruise!

Sea cruises are usually associated with relaxation, travel, and new experiences. But sometimes, even during a peaceful cruise, situations can arise where a person's attentiveness and quick reaction play an important role.

This is exactly what happened on January 15 at around 2:15 p.m. during a cruise on one of the largest ships in the MSC Cruises fleet — the MSC World Europa, when the ship was passing near the coast of the island of Sardinia (Italy).

At this moment, the attentiveness of one of the passengers helped to quickly draw the crew's attention to people who were in distress on the high seas. We are very pleased that these passengers turned out to be our tourists – >>>Slobodsky Zakhary and his mother >>>Morzhova Iryna.

A signal in the sea that could have been missed
While staying in cabin #14047, 16-year-old Zakhary noticed a small boat in the sea. The people on it were trying to attract the attention of a large ship.
They gave signals:
- whistled,
- used foil glare,
- actively gesticulated towards the liner.
Such signals are often used at sea when it is necessary to make it clear to other ships that people need help.

>>>Zachary immediately realized that the situation could be dangerous. Without delay, he reported what he had seen through Guest Services. At the same time, the information was transmitted to the ship's personnel through other channels so that the crew could quickly check the situation.

It is attentiveness and speed of reaction that are crucial in such situations.

How did the crew of the liner react?
After receiving the message, the ship's crew began to act in accordance with international maritime procedures.

First, the crew checked the information and visually confirmed the presence of the boat. After that, the signal was transmitted to the bridge.

The standard response procedure then followed:
1. The bridge team received information;
2. The situation was assessed;
3. A rescue team was prepared;
4. A lifeboat was dispatched to the scene.

Many passengers on deck 7 were able to observe the rescue operation. As a result, the people on the boat were successfully rescued.

What happens on a cruise ship when they spot people in distress
Cruise ships operate under strict international maritime safety regulations.
When the crew receives information about a person or vessel in danger, a clear algorithm of actions is triggered.

Main stages of response

1. Message to the bridge
Any signal of danger is transmitted to the officers on the bridge who control the ship.
2. Verification of information
Used:
• surveillance cameras,
• binoculars,
• navigation systems,
• radars.
3. Preparation of the rescue operation
The team can:
• change the ship's course,
• reduce speed,
• prepare rescue boats.
4. Launching a speedboat
Modern liners have fast rescue boats - special fast boats for helping people on the water.
5. Coordination with coastal services
If necessary, the crew contacts the coast guard and maritime rescue services. Such procedures are regularly practiced by the crew during training.

Safety on cruise ships
Modern cruise ships have comprehensive safety systems.
These include:
• a team of officers on the bridge,
• security services,
• a medical center,
• lifeboats,
• video surveillance systems.
In addition, the crew undergoes regular training in various scenarios, including searching for people at sea and rescue operations.

Why passenger attentiveness is also important
Even on the most technologically advanced ships, the human factor remains important. Sometimes it is the attentiveness of a passenger that helps to quickly notice a situation that needs to be checked. That is why the crew always asks guests to report any unusual events or signals at sea.

The story of >>>Zakhary Slobodsky — is an example of how attentiveness and responsibility can matter even during a regular trip.
