A revolution in cruises: a 100% electric liner is already on the horizon!

A concept of a cruise ship that will change the industry forever has been unveiled. No smoke, no noise, no compromises: a new era of cruising from Meyer Werft.

The company Meyer Werft has presented a concept study that envisions the creation of the world's first cruise ship that is powered 100% by batteries — the Vision vessel with a gross tonnage of 88,000 tons.

The ship will be 275 meters long and will accommodate up to 1,856 passengers. The battery system for the project will be supplied by Corvus Energy.

According to the official press release, the battery system will be able to cover a significant portion of standard European cruise routes. In particular, routes such as Barcelona — Civitavecchia (Rome) are mentioned.

“We asked ourselves how we can use innovation to reduce CO₂ emissions and accelerate decarbonization — not in 50 years, but much sooner. We can achieve up to a 95% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions,” said Tim Krug, representative of the Concept Development Group at Meyer Werft.

Meyer Werft Chief Sales Officer Thomas Weigend added that the required technologies are already available, so if an order is placed this year, the first vessel could be delivered as early as 2031.

It is expected that by 2030, around 100 European ports will have the necessary infrastructure to charge such vessels.

The company also noted that hybrid versions of the ship with additional generators can be built upon request, allowing transatlantic crossings.

The Vision project also opens up new architectural approaches to cruise ship design. In particular, eliminating vertical exhaust gas cleaning shafts and traditional funnels, which usually occupy part of the open decks, will allow for more open space and provide passengers with unobstructed panoramic views.

In addition, the absence of main engines is considered a significant advantage, as it increases onboard comfort by reducing noise and vibrations.
