History of Silversea Cruises

The History of SilverSea Cruises: from a Luxury Dream to a World Leader in Premium Cruises

Founding and Beginnings (1994–2001)
SilverSea Cruises was established as a family business by the Lefebvre family from Italy in partnership with the Vlasov Group. In 1994, the company’s first liner, Silver Cloud, was launched, immediately impressing with its innovative concept of an ultra-luxury all-inclusive cruise, with a small number of passengers, the highest level of service and a personalized approach.
The success of the ship led to the launch of Silver Wind in 1995, and later to a new series of liners, Silver Shadow (2000) and Silver Whisper (2001), which raised the standards of premium water recreation.

World Travel and Growth (2002–2009)
In 2002, SilverSea launched its first circumnavigation, allowing guests to visit all seven continents in one voyage. This was a significant step in positioning the brand as a global player in the world of luxury cruising.
Beginning in 2007, the company actively developed expedition destinations, focusing on the Arctic, Antarctic, Galapagos Islands and South America. This segment became a powerful complement to ocean travel, offering unique itineraries for experienced travelers.
2009 — Silver Spirit, a modern ocean liner, joined the fleet, strengthening the company’s position in the premium ocean cruise segment.

Expedition Development and Strategic Changes (2010–2018)
The acquisition of the Galapagos Explorer II in 2012 (renamed Silver Galapagos) enabled SilverSea to become the first luxury company to consistently serve one of the world’s most sensitive natural regions. The company continued to develop its expedition fleet, adding the Silver Discoverer and Silver Galapagos, followed by the Silver Muse, which combined the luxury of ocean cruising with trips to rare destinations.
Until 2018, SilverSea was fully controlled by the Lefebvre family. In June 2018, Royal Caribbean Group acquired a 66.7% stake, and in July 2020, it completed the buyout, becoming the sole owner of the company. This gave SilverSea access to new investments, infrastructure and innovation, while maintaining its autonomy, philosophy and quality.

New Fleet and Technological Update (2020–present)
SilverSea has launched a series of modern ships that have become symbols of a new era for the brand:
• Silver Moon (2020) and Silver Dawn (2021) are flagships that introduced the revolutionary S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) gastronomic program.
• Silver Nova (2023) is the first liner in the fleet with a hybrid LNG engine and a unique asymmetrical design focused on sustainability.
• Silver Ray (2024) is a sister ship to Silver Nova, continuing the brand’s new environmental and design philosophy.
• Silver Endeavour (2022) is an innovative expedition ship capable of traveling to the most remote and harsh corners of the planet.

Innovation and Awards
SilverSea actively implements the philosophy of "Travel Deeper" — a deeper immersion in the culture, nature and authenticity of the regions. Thanks to the S.A.L.T. (local gastronomy) and Otium (Roman approach to relaxation) programs, guests receive a full cultural and restorative experience.
The company has repeatedly won awards as the best premium cruise line, including from Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Forbes and other reputable sources.

Management
The founder is Antonio Lefebvre d’Ovidio, an Italian maritime lawyer who has led and developed SilverSea since 1994.
His son, Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, became the company’s executive chairman in 2001, overseeing the integration process with Royal Caribbean.
Barbara Muckermann headed the line from 2022 to 2024 — under her leadership, the company received Silver Endeavour and Silver Nova.
Since 2024, Bert Hernandez, who worked on the launch of Silver Ray, has been president.

SilverSea Cruises is a company that has been developing, innovating and transforming for over 30 years, from the shores of Monaco to every continent, from all-inclusive to a sustainable hybrid fleet. The company successfully combines luxury, personalized service and the discovery of the most remote corners of the world, and remains one of the leaders in the premium and expedition cruise industry.

The latest ships Silver Nova (2023) and Silver Ray (2024) are equipped with LNG + hydrogen fuel cell + battery systems — capable of operating without emissions in ports and have an asymmetrical design.

6. Silver Endeavour — the expedition pride of the fleet
The liner Silver Endeavour is one of the most modern expedition ships in the world. Acquired by SilverSea in 2022 (formerly known as Crystal Endeavour) for 275$ million, it was quickly adapted to the extreme conditions of travel in polar regions. The ship is distinguished by its extreme maneuverability, PC6 ice class and luxurious conditions on board.
In 2022, Silver Endeavour became the first cruise ship in history to hold a grand dedication ceremony in the legendary Lemaire Channel in Antarctica — one of the most spectacular places on the planet.

7. Pioneer in ultra-luxury expeditions
SilverSea began expedition programs back in 2007 with the Silver Explorer, and was also the first to lay a regular route to the Galapagos and Antarctica — today it has 4 expedition ships and 8 ocean liners.

8. The first luxury liner with an asymmetrical design
Silver Nova became the first luxury liner with an asymmetrical deck layout: a pool with an offset location closer to the side, a three-story atrium with panoramic windows, glass elevators — all this is designed for maximum space and visibility.

9. Hotel at the edge of the world
SilverSea is building a hotel in Puerto Williams (today the southernmost port in the world) — another innovation for expedition travelers.

10. Silver Cloud is a legend of the SilverSea fleet with a rich history
Silver Cloud became the first liner of the SilverSea company, solemnly consecrated in 1994 by the Prince of Monaco himself. Since then, it has come a long way: during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the ship served as a luxury hotel for guests.
In 2017, Silver Cloud was modernized and equipped with an ice class, which made it possible to carry out expedition cruises to the Arctic and Antarctic. It combines the comfort of a luxury class with the possibilities of real exploration of the polar regions.

11. Intellectual entertainment
SilverSea cruises are often chosen by travelers who value not only comfort, but also intellectual leisure. On board the Silver Wind and other liners, team quizzes (trivia) are regularly held, which have become a real tradition and a favorite way to communicate among guests. This is a great opportunity to have fun, meet like-minded people and show off your erudition.

The program is delivered through three key onboard components: S.A.L.T. Experiences, S.A.L.T. Lab Classes and S.A.L.T. Kitchen Degustation, each designed to enhance their culinary experience.

IMPORTANT: the information is provided for informational purposes only and may vary depending on the selected cruise.
Please confirm the exact details with your Four Gates Group cruise specialist.

1. S.A.L.T. Experiences
S.A.L.T. Experiences are special gastronomic excursions during the cruise that allow guests to:

- Small groups for maximum engagement.
- Lively acquaintance with culture through food and ingredients.

2. S.A.L.T. Lab Classes

- Participate in daily cooking workshops in groups of up to 18 people (ceviche, tamales, local desserts, etc.).
- Cook under the guidance of experienced chefs, learning the history and origins of dishes.
- Receive step-by-step recipes and cooking tips available for repetition at home.

Benefits:
- Interactive learning with immersion in local gastronomic traditions.
- Direct communication with chefs and fellow gourmets.
- Part of the evening Chef’s Table — a privilege for the chosen ones.

3. S.A.L.T. Kitchen Degustation

- Dishes created taking into account the regional cultural and gastronomic context: for example, Alaskan Salmon Pie or Birch-syrup braised duck in Alaska.

This allows passengers to independently choose the format of the trip according to their needs, preferences and budget.
