HISTORY OF AZAMARA CRUISES

History of Azamara Cruises: from premium ships to the Destination Immersion® concept

Origin of the Name
The name Azamara has a unique symbolic meaning. It comes from the name of the star Acamar, which in ancient times was considered “the brightest star in the southern sky.” It also combines the Romance words azul (blue) and mar (sea). Translated, it can be understood as “a star above the blue sea” — a metaphor for travel, discovery, and maritime romance.

Timeline of Development
2007 — Founding
Royal Caribbean Group created the Azamara Cruises brand to occupy the premium boutique cruise niche. The fleet included two R-class ships — Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest, accommodating 700 guests.
On May 5, 2007, Azamara Journey embarked on its first voyage.

2009 — Rebranding to Azamara Club Cruises
The company changed its name to Azamara Club Cruises to emphasize the intimate, club-style travel experience.

2012–2013 — Fleet Renovation
The Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey underwent extensive modernization, including updates to cabins, restaurants, and public areas.

2018 — Fleet Expansion
The fleet grew with a third ship — the former Adonia from P&O Cruises, which was renamed Azamara Pursuit.

2019 — New Brand and Strategy
The company returned to the name Azamara, introducing a new logo and launching over 1,700 shore excursions in pre- and post-land program format.

2021 — Acquisition by Sycamore Partners
Royal Caribbean Group sold the Azamara brand to the investment fund Sycamore Partners for million.
A fourth ship, Pacific Princess, joined the fleet and was renamed Azamara Onward after refurbishment.

2022 — Anniversary and New Ship
Azamara celebrated the 15th anniversary of its first voyage. Azamara Onward officially joined the fleet.

2024 — New Leadership
Dondra Ritzenthaler was appointed CEO, tasked with expanding the brand’s global presence.

2025 — Historic Year
• In Barcelona, three ships — Azamara Journey, Azamara Quest, and Azamara Onward — were docked simultaneously for the first time.
• The brand announced a return to Alaska in 2026 and the launch of World Cruise in 2027.
• The Travel Partner Awards 2024 were presented.

Values and Heritage of Azamara

Interesting Facts about Azamara Club Cruises

1. Ships that “go where the big ones can’t”
Small R-class ships can enter narrow bays and small ports that larger vessels simply cannot reach. This allows guests to visit remote islands and quiet towns that are almost untouched by tourists.

2. Nighttime adventures in ports
Azamara is known for long stays and overnight port calls, allowing guests to experience the city after sunset, try local dishes in night venues, and see the town’s life “through the eyes of locals.”

3. Evenings full of surprises
AzAmazing Evenings® often take place in unusual locations: historic palaces, wine cellars, or city waterfronts, where art and music intertwine with history.

4. Ships with history
Azamara Onward — formerly Pacific Princess — received a new life after refurbishment, and some Azamara ships still carry elements of Royal Caribbean’s classic design on board.

5. Combining comfort and “escaping the crowds”
Despite premium service, the ships offer an intimate, “family-like” atmosphere, where passengers can feel part of a small community of travelers.

6. Secret routes
The company often selects lesser-known ports, such as Greek islands without major cruise lines or remote corners of Alaska, opening new travel horizons for passengers.

7. Cultural immersion
Each cruise includes programs to explore local traditions: culinary workshops, evening shows, and private excursions rarely accessible to other tourists.

8. Active philanthropy
Even during cruises, the company runs volunteer programs, including tree planting, assisting schools, and participating in the restoration of public facilities in port cities.

9. Themed journeys
Azamara organizes specialized cruises, such as wine tours, gastronomic trips, or art-focused programs, allowing guests to deepen their favorite interests during the voyage.

10. Music and art on board
In addition to classic evenings, the ships offer live concerts, art exhibitions, and meetings with artists, creating the atmosphere of a small cultural club at sea.

11. Focus on ecology and sustainability
Azamara actively implements environmental programs: minimizing plastic, using energy-efficient technologies, and offering educational programs for passengers about preserving marine flora and fauna.

12. Special events and celebrations
The ships celebrate local holidays, festivals, and important events in port cities, giving guests a unique opportunity to celebrate “like locals” in different parts of the world.

13. Partnerships with local organizations
The company actively supports local initiatives in ports of call, from environmental programs to cultural festivals, allowing passengers to become part of the local community.
