🇮🇹 3. Italian Style Town (意式风情区)
💡 Interesting facts and background:
Tianjin's Italian Style Town is the largest collection of Italian architecture found anywhere outside Italy itself: 137 buildings in Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque styles, built in the early 20th century. It is the best-preserved of the city's nine former foreign concessions.
🔹 The central Marco Polo Square, with its "Winged Lion" fountain, evokes Venice itself — locals still gather here for an evening stroll.

The Italian concession in Tianjin existed from 1902 to 1943 — the only Italian colonial territory on mainland China. Italian architect Mario Paci designed most of the quarter, modelling it on the cities of northern Italy. After the Second World War the concession was returned to China, and in the early 2000s the quarter underwent a large-scale restoration, turning it into a tourist and entertainment district.

Ancient Culture Street is the birthplace of Tianjin itself — the site where a settlement first grew up on the banks of the Haihe River some 600 years ago. A sign reading "Jinmen Guli" ("Hometown of the Sea Gate") hangs above the southern archway, an unofficial symbol of the city's cultural identity.
🔹 At the centre of the street stands Tianhougong Temple, dedicated to Mazu, the patron goddess of sailors — over 600 years old, it is the point around which the entire city historically took shape.

A settlement first grew up here during the Yuan dynasty, when a port was built to move grain along the Grand Canal. In the 15th century, Emperor Yongle formally founded a military garrison here called Tianjin Wei — "the Son of Heaven's Ford" — giving the city its name. Tianhougong Temple was built in 1326 for sailors and merchants who prayed for a safe voyage. The street took its present appearance following a major 1985–1986 reconstruction marking the 600th anniversary of Tianjin's founding.

🎡 5. Tianjin Eye (天津之眼)

The Tianjin Eye is the world's only Ferris wheel built directly on a bridge rather than on the ground. It "straddles" the Yongle Bridge over the Haihe River at the point where the river's three branches historically meet — the most symbolically important spot in the city.

🏺 6. China House / Porcelain House (瓷房子)

The Porcelain House is Tianjin's most eccentric landmark: a former early-20th-century French mansion that antiques collector Zhang Lianzhi completely covered in antique Chinese porcelain.
🔹 Over 4,000 antique porcelain pieces, 400 jade and marble sculptures, and more than 700 million porcelain fragments were used in the decoration.
🔹 The boundary wall, nicknamed the "Wall of Peace", is built from 635 antique porcelain vases dating from the Qing dynasty and the Republican era.

🏛️ 7. Wudadao / Five Great Avenues (五大道)

Wudadao is Tianjin's best-preserved district of former foreign concessions, packing more than 2,000 buildings in British, French, German, Spanish and Italian styles into a compact area.
🔹 It was home to numerous high-ranking officials, generals, and China's last emperor Puyi, who lived in the district for several years fleeing political upheaval before his departure for Manchuria.
