The new hydrogen-powered vessel Viking Astrea has been launched at the Fincantieri shipyard.

New ocean ship from Viking, Viking Astrea, has been floated out at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona.



Featuring a propulsion system that partly runs on liquid hydrogen and fuel cells, this ship represents another step in the development of innovative technological solutions to increase the sustainability of the cruise industry.With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tonnes, a length of 239 meters, and accommodating 998 passengers across 499 cabins, the ship is scheduled to set sail on its maiden cruise in June 2027.

The godmother of the ship Astrea is Francesca Baldinelli, who works in production control at the Ancona shipyard. In addition to her, the float-out ceremony was attended by Gilberto Tobaldi, director of the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, and Ghislaine Lemarié, Viking's Vice President of Ship Development and Construction.



Another hydrogen-powered ship, which the cruise line claims is the world's first, was rolled out from the dry dock at the same shipyard in March — the Viking Libra.

Delivery of the ship Libra to the customer is scheduled for November 2026.
