MSC Breaks Ground on Sandy Cay Private Island in The Bahamas
On September 28, MSC held a groundbreaking ceremony for Sandy Cay, its new private island destination in The Bahamas adjacent to the Ocean Cay marine reserve. Construction and site work are already well underway ahead of a scheduled opening in 2028.
The ceremony was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the MSC Group Cruise Division, and Philip Davis, prime minister of The Bahamas, along with other government officials and project stakeholders. This large-scale initiative serves as a powerful economic boost for the region and significantly strengthens the partnership between the company and the Bahamian government.
The Sandy Cay project, first announced in April 2026, is located adjacent to the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and is being developed exclusively for guests of MSC Cruises and the Explora Journeys brand.

The company noted that the new island will complement Ocean Cay by offering a more intimate and upscale experience centered on wellness and relaxation. Plans call for:

According to company representatives, the successful environmental expertise and conservation initiatives developed at Ocean Cay will certainly be scaled to Sandy Cay as well. Both islands will operate as distinct destinations with their own unique character, allowing for more flexible passenger distribution and offering guests of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys two wonderful private island options in The Bahamas.
