History of Holland America Line

The Holland America Line (HAL) cruise company began its history more than 150 years ago – in 1873 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was originally called the Netherlands-America Steamship Company and was founded as a transport shipping company, carrying out passenger and cargo transportation between Europe and North America. Already in the late 19th century, HAL liners became known as reliable ships for transatlantic travel, especially popular among emigrants heading to the New World.
By 1895, the company made its first cruise voyage, and from 1898 began offering regular tourist routes, marking the beginning of its transformation into a cruise operator. During both world wars, Holland America liners were used as transport and hospital ships, playing an important humanitarian role.
In the post-war decades, as interest in transatlantic transportation declined, the company focused on developing the cruise line. By the early 1970s, HAL had completely stopped regular sea voyages and switched to organizing sea cruises on tourist routes.
In 1989, Holland America Line became part of Carnival Corporation & plc, the largest cruise holding company in the world. From that moment on, an era of large-scale investments in fleet renewal and development of global destinations began. In 1996, the company acquired its private island - Half Moon Cay, becoming a pioneer in creating exclusive destinations in the Caribbean.

Today, the HAL fleet consists of 11 modern liners, including innovative ships of the Pinnacle and Signature classes. The flagship Rotterdam, built in 2021, represents a new era for Holland America Line – a combination of tradition, environmental standards and modern technology.
Over its history, the company has carried more than 10 million passengers, remaining true to its values: impeccable service, cultural heritage, exquisite cuisine and respect for the environment.

Disembarkation begins approximately one hour after arrival at the port and lasts 2-4 hours. All guests must disembark the ship within this time. Please remember to factor in travel time to the airport when planning your flights.

Can I stay longer on board?
No, once the disembarkation procedure is complete, all guests must leave the ship. We recommend using the transfer service or pre-booking a taxi/shuttle.
