History of Celebrity Cruises
Founding: an elegant start (1988)
Celebrity Cruises was founded in 1988 by the Greek shipping corporation Chandris Group, which already had experience in passenger transportation. The goal of creating a new brand was to offer a high-quality cruise product in the premium segment, combining European style, first-class service and reasonable pricing.
From the very beginning, Celebrity Cruises stood out among its competitors with its elegant ship designs, exquisite cuisine, and emphasis on a high standard of service.
The company’s logo features a stylized letter "Χ", symbolizing the Greek letter "Chi", the first letter in the name "Chandris".
The early era: classic liners (1990–1996)
Celebrity Cruises’ first ship was Horizon (1990), followed by Zenith, Century and Galaxy. These ships were distinguished by an exceptional level of design and service, which quickly earned Celebrity Cruises a reputation as one of the best cruise brands among those seeking comfort without the pathos of mass tourism.
Turning point: merger with Royal Caribbean (1997)
In 1997, Royal Caribbean International acquired Celebrity Cruises, creating Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (now Royal Caribbean Group). The merger gave Celebrity access to significant investment and technology, allowing it to take the brand to the next level.
Fleet Development: Millennium Class (2000–2002)
In the early 2000s, the company introduced the Millennium class – these were ultra-modern liners for that time, distinguished by an innovative gas turbine power plant and luxurious spa areas. The class included:
- Millennium
- Infinity
- Summit
- Constellation
The Modern Era: Solstice Class (2008–2012)
In 2008, the company made a breakthrough with the launch of a new generation of Solstice-class liners. These ships surprised the market with unconventional solutions:
• a natural grass lawn on the upper deck (Lawn Club),
• luxurious restaurants with open kitchens,
• spacious balconies and elegant interiors.
The Solstice class included:
- Celebrity Solstice
- Celebrity Equinox
- Celebrity Eclipse
- Celebrity Silhouette
- Celebrity Reflection
These ships have cemented Celebrity Cruises’ status as a "modern luxury" brand.
New level: Edge class (since 2018)
In 2018, the company surprised the world again with the launch of Celebrity Edge, a revolutionary liner with innovative architecture:
• Magic Carpet® – a movable terrace that can be lowered and raised along the side.
• Infinite Veranda® staterooms, where the balcony becomes part of the room.
• Eden – a multi-level space with glass walls that transforms from a lounge to a nightclub.
After Edge, the following were introduced:
- Celebrity Apex (2020)
- Celebrity Beyond (2022)
- Celebrity Ascent (2023)
This generation of liners has solidified Celebrity’s image as an innovative, stylish and environmentally friendly brand.
Environmental awareness and inclusivity
Celebrity Cruises is actively developing an environmentally sustainable strategy:

Useful information for tourists
Tips to help you always feel comfortable on board a ship
Before you travel
When embarking on an international cruise, we recommend that you make sure you have:
• a passport with the necessary visas;
• cruise documents; medical insurance policy;
• related documents.
When boarding the liner
• We recommend that you arrive at the seaport 4 hours before the liner’s departure.
ATTENTION! THE LINER WILL NOT WAIT for those who are late! Tourists bear full material and moral responsibility for the consequences arising from their lateness to the ship’s departure.
Please note that luggage is checked in at the port and delivered to the cabin (a suggested tip for luggage delivery is approximately 2$ per item, payable upon check-in).
• During customs and border formalities, you hand over your passport to the ship’s immigration officers (for the duration of the cruise), board the ship, and check into your cabin; the cabin number and category are listed in your cruise documents.
• Each cabin has information on the location of services, a plan-map of the ship, and a telephone directory of various ship services. Each cabin is equipped with air conditioning, a telephone, a TV, a safe, 110-volt and 220-volt power outlets. Some cabins have a hairdryer.
