What is a biometric passport?
A biometric passport is an international passport that contains an electronic chip with your personal data. It is thanks to this document that citizens of Ukraine can travel visa-free to many countries around the world, including Europe. More information.
What is the Schengen Area?
It is a union of European countries that have abolished passport control at their mutual borders. The number of countries belonging to the Schengen Area is constantly growing. For example, Romania and Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area in 2024. Additionally, with a biometric passport, you can stay within the Schengen Area for no more than 90 days within any 180-day period—known as the 90/180 rule.
IMPORTANT: Even though documents are usually not checked within the Schengen Area, your documents will mandatory be checked when boarding a cruise. Any discrepancy in your documents is grounds for denial of boarding onto the cruise ship without any refund or compensation.

What is the 90/180 Rule?
This rule applies to tourists staying in the Schengen Area with a biometric passport. The maximum cumulative period of stay within any half-year (180 days) must not exceed 90 days.
Note: Staying longer is a violation of the law and may lead to deportation and a ban on entry to the Schengen Area.
Is it possible to skip obtaining a visa for a cruise if I don't plan on going ashore?
The answer to this question is both — yes and no. This is due to the transit regulations of each individual country. As shown in our visa table, in some countries where a visa is required, it is possible to obtain it on board or not obtain it at all if you do not plan to go ashore.
But there are also other countries where a visa is required regardless of whether you will be going ashore in port. For example: USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and others.
