Cruises from Pozzallo

Pozzallo — Sicily's southernmost cruise port and the maritime gateway between Italy and Malta. This quiet, authentic little town on the island's far south-eastern tip moves at its own unhurried pace: fishing boats bob at the quays, the air carries the scent of sea salt and freshly baked sfincione, and on the Pietrenere promenade locals take their evening passeggiata — the leisurely stroll that lies at the heart of Sicilian life. Pozzallo belongs to the province of Ragusa and sits just a few kilometres from eight Baroque towns recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. This proximity to the irreplaceable landmarks of the Val di Noto — Ragusa, Modica, Noto and Scicli — makes it an ideal departure point for discovering Sicily's unique late Baroque heritage. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
For the cruise traveller, Pozzallo offers a rare chance to combine a sea voyage with an immersion into the real, uncommercialized Sicily. The small port is free from mass tourism, so every call here is a personal discovery rather than a queue for a shuttle bus. Right on the doorstep: a pristine Baroque architectural ensemble, an azure coastline flying Blue Flag awards, and the fastest ferry crossing to Valletta. ๐Ÿšข

๐Ÿ›๏ธ The History of Pozzallo — from Ancient Springs to the Gateway of the Mediterranean
โณ Over 700 years of maritime history
The history of Pozzallo is inseparable from water — both salt water and fresh. As early as the 4th century BC, a Greek settlement existed near the site of the modern town, and in Roman times an active trading emporium operated here. The town's real fame, however, came in the Middle Ages: two natural freshwater springs — Pozzofeto and Senia — were so well known among sailors that they were marked on Mediterranean navigational charts. The very name of the town derives from the word "pozzo" (well, spring).
In the 14th century a grain-loading complex was built here, complete with jetties and cargo chutes — a sophisticated logistical facility that made Pozzallo the second most important trading port in Sicily after Catania. Grain from the fertile plains of the Ragusa province was loaded onto ships and distributed across the entire Mediterranean. ๐ŸŒพ
โš”๏ธ From a defensive tower to a modern port city
The port's strategic importance attracted pirates: throughout the 15th and 16th centuries the coastline suffered repeated raids. The response was the construction of the Torre Cabrera in the early 15th century, commissioned by the Count of Modica, Giovanni Bernardo Cabrera, a powerful Catalan aristocrat. The tower combined the functions of a fortress, a warehouse and a noble residence, and became the symbol of the city — a role it retains to this day.
The catastrophic earthquake of 1693, which razed most towns in south-eastern Sicily to the ground, did not spare Pozzallo. Yet this very tragedy gave impetus to the region's triumphant revival: the destroyed towns were rebuilt in the sumptuous style of late Baroque, and it is precisely this architectural legacy that is today the greatest tourist draw of the Ragusa province. In 2002 the eight Baroque towns of the Val di Noto were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. ๐Ÿ…
A new chapter in the city's history opened in the 1990s, when the modernised port joined the Eastern Sicilian Port System Authority and was granted official status as a cruise and ferry terminal.

โš“ The Port of Pozzallo — a Gateway Between Two Islands
๐Ÿ“Š Scale and structure of the port
The modern Porto di Pozzallo is a compact yet well-equipped port complex covering approximately 112,000 m², situated to the west of the town centre. The port has two main quay sections: 570 m and 340 m. Cruise vessels use berths No. 3 (280 m), No. 4 (165 m) and No. 5 (140 m), with berth No. 2 planned for future operation. The passenger terminal "Banchina di Riva" is fully equipped for embarkation, disembarkation and transit operations. The key cruise quay is 310 m long, accommodating vessels up to 250–300 m in length. ๐Ÿ›ณ๏ธ
The port is also the main hub of ferry services between Sicily and Malta: Virtu Ferries operates up to three daily crossings to Valletta year-round. Since 2022 the port has been part of the Portuale dell'Adriatico Orientale — the Eastern Sicily Port System Authority.

๐Ÿšข How many vessels does the port handle
The port of Pozzallo is intimate, unhurried and far from overcrowded: it can accommodate several cruise ships simultaneously, while daily passenger traffic is considerably lower than at the major Mediterranean ports. This is precisely what attracts travellers who value authenticity, tranquillity and the freedom to stroll the promenade without crowds. Port calls typically last between 8 and 10 hours.

๐Ÿข Which cruise lines call at Pozzallo
The port of Pozzallo is visited by vessels operated by CroisiEurope and Oceania Cruises. The port's small scale and focus on authentic tourism make it especially appealing to premium and boutique cruise brands that cater to passengers who prefer a deep cultural immersion over mass-market excursions. ๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ’ก Fascinating facts about Pozzallo and its region
A few lesser-known details will make your visit all the richer:
๐Ÿ’ง The town is named after its wells. "Pozzallo" derives from the word "pozzo" (well). Two freshwater springs — Pozzofeto and Senia — were so vital to sailors that they were marked on medieval Mediterranean navigational charts as far back as the 15th century.
๐Ÿฐ The only tower where pirates were executed by the tide. Torre Cabrera had a singular method of execution: condemned prisoners were placed in a room at sea level and left for the rising tide to engulf them.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ The region holds Sicily's UNESCO record. All eight Baroque towns of the Val di Noto — Ragusa, Modica, Noto, Scicli, Catania, Caltagirone, Militello and Palazzolo Acreide — are inscribed on the World Heritage List as "the culmination and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe".
๐Ÿซ Modica chocolate is made without heat. The town of Modica, just 17 km from the port, has preserved a unique Aztec recipe dating to the 16th century: cocoa mass is ground cold, with only sugar and spices added. No further heat treatment — and no taste remotely resembling ordinary chocolate.
๐Ÿ“บ Pozzallo is at the heart of Montalbano country. The province of Ragusa is the primary filming location of the beloved Italian detective series Inspector Montalbano (Il Commissario Montalbano): the recognisable Baroque streets, the port and the coastline can be seen in every season.
๐Ÿ–๏ธ Four beaches — four Blue Flags. All of Pozzallo's main city beaches have received Blue Flag certification — the international award for water cleanliness and environmental standards.
๐ŸŒ‰ Sicily's closest town to Malta. From the port of Pozzallo to Valletta by sea is just 90 km — the shortest crossing between Sicily and Malta, which is why the port is the primary link between the two islands.
๐ŸŽต Birthplace of a Nobel laureate. The nearby town of Modica, 17 km away, is the birthplace of Salvatore Quasimodo — poet and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1959, one of the leading figures of Italian Hermeticism.

๐Ÿ“ The main sights of Pozzallo and the region — must-see for the cruise traveller
A cruise ship's call at Pozzallo typically lasts between 8 and 10 hours, and the town centre is just a 15-minute walk from the quay. Below is an overview of the key locations — both within the town itself and in the immediate surroundings.
๐Ÿฐ Torre Cabrera — the principal landmark of Pozzallo, a defensive tower in Sicilian Gothic style built in the first half of the 15th century at the behest of Count Cabrera. Rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, it has retained its original monumentality and is today open as a museum. Once home to a garrison, cannons and a prison for pirates, it now welcomes visitors with the carved coats of arms of the Catalan Cabrera dynasty.
๐ŸŒณ Piazza delle Rimembranze and the Pietrenere promenade — the heart of city life. The main square is shaded by palm trees and lined with cafés and the Liberty-style Municipal Hall (1923), built in honour of local-born Giorgio La Pira, a member of Italy's Constituent Assembly. A short walk leads to the wide Lungomare Pietrenere — the town's most popular evening promenade, lined with bars, restaurants and an open-air amphitheatre for summer concerts.
โ›ช The Church of Madonna di Portosalvo — a small but atmospheric church just steps from the sea, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. Its neoclassical façade and serene interior offer a perfect moment of quiet reflection between a walk and dinner.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Ragusa and Ragusa Ibla (35 km from the port) — a city of two faces and one of Sicily's most spectacular Baroque ensembles. The lower town of Ragusa Ibla clings to the slopes of a limestone hill: more than 50 Baroque churches, a maze of narrow alleys and the magnificent Cathedral of San Giorgio with its three-tiered façade — all UNESCO-listed. Approximately 35 minutes by car from the port.
๐Ÿซ Modica (17 km from the port) — "the city of 100 churches" and the chocolate capital of Sicily. Rebuilt in sumptuous Baroque style after the 1693 earthquake, the town is dominated by the Cathedral of San Giorgio. Its signature delicacy — cold-processed Modica chocolate made to a 16th-century Aztec recipe — is best sampled at the legendary Bonajuto confectionery (est. 1880, the oldest in Sicily). Approximately 20 minutes by car from the port.
๐ŸŒธ Noto (27 km from the port) — "the Paris of Sicily" and arguably the most beautiful Baroque architecture in all of Europe. Entirely rebuilt to a unified plan after 1693 in warm honey-coloured limestone, Noto's Cathedral, the Palazzo Ducezio and the main Corso Vittorio Emanuele III compose an architectural symphony that UNESCO called "the culmination and final flowering of Baroque in Europe". Approximately 30 minutes by car from the port.
๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Scicli (15 km from the port) — the least known to the wider world and arguably the most authentic Baroque town in Sicily. Golden church façades and aristocratic palazzi, virtually no tourist crowds, excellent street food — the perfect "secret" stop for the curious traveller.
โ›ด๏ธ Valletta, Malta (1 hr 45 min by ferry) — for those with more time or an overnight on board: Virtu Ferries departs several times daily. The capital of Malta is a medieval walled city built by the Knights Hospitaller and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

โœจ Why choose a cruise to Pozzallo
Pozzallo is the choice of travellers who seek not a well-trodden tourist route, but the real Sicily with no embellishments.
First, a uniquely convenient location: the port serves as an excellent starting or finishing point for Central Mediterranean cruises combining Sicily, Malta, southern Italy and Greece. โœˆ๏ธ
Second, an unrivalled concentration of UNESCO heritage: no other cruise port on the island offers such rapid access to multiple World Heritage Sites — Ragusa, Modica, Noto and Scicli — all within a 30 km radius. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

How to Get to the Cruise Port in Pozzallo

Pozzallo is a small Sicilian port town on the south-eastern coast of the island, gradually becoming a true Mediterranean cruise hub. The port is located in the Province of Ragusa and serves as the gateway to the jewels of Sicilian Baroque — UNESCO World Heritage cities: Ragusa, Modica, Noto, and Scicli. Despite its modest size, Pozzallo welcomes mid-class cruise ships and is also the main ferry hub connecting Sicily with Malta. Below is a complete step-by-step guide covering all transfer options, current prices, and tips from the cruise specialists at Four Gates Group. ๐ŸŽฏ

๐Ÿ“ Where Exactly Is the Pozzallo Cruise Port
The Port of Pozzallo consists of two zones:

โš“ Porto Grande (Main Port) — the primary area for passenger and cargo vessels:
Riva Quay — the main cruise berth, 310 metres long, accommodating ships up to 250–300 metres in length
Piers 3, 4 and 5 — additional berths for smaller vessels (280, 165 and 140 metres respectively)
Maritime Station (Stazione Marittima) — the passenger terminal with a waiting lounge, left-luggage service and a café-bar; used by both cruise passengers and ferry travellers to Malta

โš“ Piccolo Porto (Small Port) — located to the north of the main harbour; reserved for yachts, fishing boats and private vessels.

๐Ÿ“Œ GPS Address: Viale Medaglie d'Oro della Lunga Navigazione, 97016 Pozzallo RG, Italy
๐Ÿšถ Distance to the town centre: approximately 500 metres from the maritime station to the central Piazza delle Erbe

โ— Important: the exact berth where your ship will dock is always stated in your cruise voucher. Confirm it 48–72 hours before embarkation — berth assignments can change if the port schedule is revised.

โœˆ๏ธ From Catania Airport (CTA) to Pozzallo Cruise Port
Catania Fontanarossa International Airport (Vincenzo Bellini) is the nearest major airport to Pozzallo, located approximately 115 km away. Most international flights to Sicily arrive here, including connecting flights via Warsaw, Istanbul, Rome or Milan. The journey takes between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on the mode of transport.

๐Ÿš• Taxi — the fastest and most convenient option
Official licensed taxis wait for passengers outside the arrivals hall at Catania Airport around the clock.
Journey time: 1.5–2 hours (depending on traffic)
Estimated fare: from 100 to 140 euros per vehicle (fixed rate or meter — confirm with the driver before departure)
Payment: cash or card (check whether a card terminal is available)
Useful: taxi services at Catania Airport are also operated by Radio Taxi Catania (+39 095 330966)
๐Ÿ’ก Four Gates Tip: always confirm the port address and your specific berth number with the driver before setting off — not all drivers are familiar with the cruise terminal layout.

๐Ÿš Private transfer — the most comfortable option
If you are travelling as a family, in a group, or with large luggage, this is the optimal choice. The driver will meet you in the arrivals hall with a name board, assist with your bags and take you directly to the correct berth at a fixed price.
Price: from 90 to 130 euros for a saloon car (1–3 passengers), from 120 to 170 euros for a minivan (4–8 passengers)
Journey time: 1.5 hours
Advantages: fixed price, flight monitoring, no taxi queue, door-to-door service to your berth
๐Ÿค Four Gates Group arranges private transfers for its clients — simply provide your flight number when booking your cruise.

๐ŸšŒ AST Bus — the budget option
Azienda Siciliana Trasporti (AST) operates regular bus services between Catania Airport and Pozzallo.
Route: Catania Aeroporto → Pozzallo Viale Europa (direct, no transfers required)
Ticket price: approximately 9–11 euros one way
Journey time: 1 hour 35 minutes
Frequency: 4–5 departures per day (check the timetable at aziendasicilianatrasporti.it)
AST stop at the airport: outside the arrivals hall
Stop in Pozzallo: Viale Europa — from here it is approximately 10 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by taxi to the maritime station
โš ๏ธ Important: the bus has a limited capacity for large suitcases; on busy services the driver may refuse to load oversized luggage. Travellers with large cruise baggage are advised to opt for a taxi or private transfer.

โœˆ๏ธ From Comiso Airport (CIY) to Pozzallo Cruise Port
Comiso Ippocrate Regional Airport (CIY) is located in the Province of Ragusa, approximately 55–60 km from Pozzallo. It is the closest airport to the port, although its route network is considerably more limited than Catania's.

๐Ÿš• Taxi or private transfer — the best option
Journey time: approximately 55–60 minutes
Estimated taxi fare: from 60 to 80 euros per vehicle
Private transfer (Sicily Shuttle, Viator): from 55 euros for a saloon car
Airport taxi rank: located directly outside the terminal exit, available 24/7
๐Ÿ’ก Four Gates Tip: if you find a convenient flight through Comiso (CIY), this is an ideal option for cruises departing from Pozzallo. At just 55 km, the transfer is significantly shorter and cheaper than from Catania.

๐Ÿš‚ From Ragusa to Pozzallo Cruise Port
Ragusa is the provincial capital, located 35 km from the port. Buses from major Sicilian cities also arrive here.

๐Ÿš• Taxi: 30–40 minutes, 40–55 euros
๐ŸšŒ AST Bus: Ragusa–Pozzallo line, ticket approximately 3–4 euros, journey time 40–50 minutes, several departures per day
๐Ÿš— Own or rental car: approximately 35 km via the SS115 road or through Modica, 30–40 minutes
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: if you would like to visit Baroque sights before your cruise — Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Noto — it is easy to plan a day trip finishing in Pozzallo, from where you board your ship.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ From Pozzallo Town Centre to the Cruise Terminal
If you have spent a night or a few days at a hotel in Pozzallo, reaching your ship is extremely straightforward:

๐Ÿšถ On foot — the most convenient option for most hotels in the town centre:
• From the central Piazza delle Erbe to the maritime station — approximately 5–7 minutes on foot
• The route runs along the seafront promenade, partly through a pleasant coastal garden
Recommended: comfortable even with suitcases thanks to the flat terrain

๐Ÿš• Taxi from your hotel — 8–15 euros depending on distance; advisable with large luggage or for passengers with reduced mobility. Taxis in Pozzallo can be booked through Radio Taxi Pozzallo or arranged at the hotel reception.

๐Ÿš— Hotel transfer: most hotels in Pozzallo offer a transfer service to the port or can arrange a taxi on your behalf. Enquire at the reception desk.

๐Ÿš— By Car — Parking Near the Port
If you are arriving at the port in your own or a rented vehicle, several parking options are available near the maritime station:

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Portopark — the most popular guarded car park near the port:
Address: Contrada Raganzino 47, Pozzallo RG
Distance to the port: approximately 800 metres (free shuttle to the port gates)
Price: from 6.90 euros per day
Features: security guard, CCTV, shuttle to the terminal
Booking: online at portopark.it or via Parclick

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Terminal Parking Porto Pozzallo — car park within the port zone:
Address: Largo Vespri Siciliani, Pozzallo
Distance to the berth: approximately 30 metres
Features: CCTV, open-air spaces; opens 2 hours before the first ferry departure
Drawback: less suited to long-term parking; primarily intended for short trips to Malta

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ GPS Route: turning onto Viale Medaglie d'Oro and Viale Europa will bring you directly to the port gates. "Porto" signs are posted throughout the town and are clearly visible.
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: book Portopark online in advance — spaces fill up quickly during peak season.

โ™ฟ Accessibility for Passengers with Reduced Mobility
The Port of Pozzallo is fully adapted for passengers with reduced mobility:
โœ… The maritime station is equipped with ramps and lifts
โœ… The Riva Quay is located directly in front of the terminal — minimal distance from the building to the gangway
โœ… AST buses have low-floor entry and designated spaces for wheelchairs
โœ… Accessible taxis for passengers with reduced mobility can be booked by phone through Radio Taxi Pozzallo
โœ… Terminal staff are available to assist with embarkation — be sure to notify your cruise company of any special requirements in advance

โฐ When to Arrive at the Cruise Terminal
Most cruise lines open check-in 3–4 hours before the ship's departure. Recommended arrival times:
๐Ÿ• MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises: 3–3.5 hours before departure
๐Ÿ• Oceania Cruises, CroisiEurope and others: at your assigned check-in window (typically 30-minute slots)
๐Ÿ• Luxury segment (Silversea, Seabourn): any time after the terminal opens
โ— Boarding deadline: typically 60–90 minutes before departure — arriving late means watching your ship sail away from the quay. All Four Gates Group vouchers include the precise boarding time for your specific cruise.

๐Ÿ’ก Expert Tips from Four Gates Group
Over years of working with routes through Pozzallo, our cruise specialists have compiled a set of practical tips that will save you time, money and stress:

๐ŸŒ… Arrive the day before your cruise. A long transfer from Catania combined with a potential flight delay is a risky combination. One day in Pozzallo or Ragusa gives you a safety buffer and the chance to discover the jewels of Sicilian Baroque.

๐Ÿ’ผ Book your transfer in advance. Pozzallo has a limited number of licensed taxis. On busy embarkation days, a free vehicle at the right moment may simply not be available — especially if your flight arrives late at night.

โœˆ๏ธ Consider Comiso Airport. If there is a convenient routing through Comiso (CIY), the transfer to the port is noticeably shorter and cheaper — just 55 km compared to 115 km from Catania.

๐Ÿงณ Leave your luggage at the hotel until boarding. If you arrive in the morning but embarkation is not until the afternoon, most hotels in Pozzallo and Ragusa will store your bags free of charge after check-out.

๐Ÿ’ถ Carry cash. In smaller Sicilian towns, taxis and some bus ticket offices still prefer cash payments. Keep 20–30 euros in small notes.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Download apps in advance: Trenitalia (trains), AST Sicilia (buses), Google Maps with an offline Sicily map, Google Translate with the Italian language pack — English-language signs in the Province of Ragusa are far less common than in major tourist cities.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Don't rush to the port five hours early. Pozzallo's maritime station is small and lacks the facilities for prolonged waiting. It is far more enjoyable to spend a few hours before boarding at a seafront café or exploring the town centre.

๐Ÿจ Choose a hotel in central Pozzallo or in Ragusa. From Pozzallo town centre to the port is just 5 minutes on foot. Ragusa is a charming Baroque city 35 km away, perfect for a rich day of sightseeing before your voyage begins.

Pozzallo Attractions & Sights: A Complete Guide for Cruise Tourists

Pozzallo is a small, sunny town at the very southern tip of Sicily, located in the province of Ragusa, just 90 km from the Maltese coast. Cruise ships operated by CroisiEurope and Oceania Cruises call here. The town itself has its own charm — a medieval tower, azure beaches, a fishing waterfront. But the main reason tourists step ashore is the incredible concentration of UNESCO sites within a 30–60 km radius: the baroque cities of Ragusa, Modica, Noto, Scicli, and the ancient Greek city of Syracuse. For cruise passengers with 8–10 hours in port, the key is choosing the right itinerary. Below is a trusted guide to the key attractions with 2026 prices, opening hours and exact directions from the port of Pozzallo to each destination. ๐ŸŽฏ

๐Ÿฐ 1. Torre Cabrera — Symbol of Pozzallo
๐Ÿ’ก Interesting Facts & Information:
Torre Cabrera is the true symbol of the city — its image even appears on the coat of arms of Pozzallo. At first glance it seems like just an old seaside tower, but it actually combined the functions of an aristocratic residence, grain warehouse and watchtower against pirates. ๐Ÿด‍โ˜ ๏ธ
๐Ÿ”น The tower was built in the 15th century on the orders of the Count of Modica, Giovanni Bernardo Cabrera — a member of one of Sicily's most distinguished Catalan noble families. The architectural style is Sicilian Gothic.
๐Ÿ”น The building has a square plan with sides of 20 metres and a height of 28 metres: three storeys and a basement. The main floor is adorned with Gothic ribbed vaults and elegant triple-arched windows.
๐Ÿ”น In the 15th century, the site where the tower stands was famous for two natural springs — «Pozzofeto» and «Segna» — that were marked on the navigational charts of Mediterranean sailors. That is why the port was named Pozzallo — from the word «pozzo» (well).
๐Ÿ”น The tower survived the devastating earthquake of 1693, was subsequently rebuilt, and even served as a defensive post during World War II.
๐Ÿ”น Today the tower houses the Museo Torre Cabrera — small but atmospheric: you can admire medieval artefacts and enjoy views over the harbour. ๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿ“œ History:
Pozzallo began as a settlement that grew up around this tower — in the 18th century a fishing community developed around it, which gradually grew into a fully-fledged town. The Cabrera counts used the tower to store grain that was loaded onto merchant ships: Pozzallo was one of the most important grain ports in medieval Sicily. In 1693 the earthquake destroyed much of the structure — the tower was rebuilt but in a somewhat different form. Today it is a national monument of Italy and the most visited tourist landmark in the town.

๐Ÿšข Getting There from Pozzallo Port:
On foot: 15–20 minutes from the terminal exit along the seafront to Via Roma. The tower stands right on the waterfront.
Taxi: 3–5 minutes, EUR 5–8. Address: Via Roma / Lungomare, 97016 Pozzallo (RG)

๐Ÿ’ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
Museum entry: EUR 2–3 (confirm on site)
Exterior viewing: free, 24 hours
Approximate museum opening hours: 10:00–13:00 and 16:00–19:00 (check current schedule at the tourist office)
โš ๏ธ Tip: even if the museum is closed, walking around the tower and strolling along the seafront is a pleasant 30–40 minutes. There are several lovely restaurants with sea views nearby. ๐Ÿท

๐Ÿ™๏ธ 2. Ragusa Ibla — «The Pearl of the Baroque»
๐Ÿ’ก Interesting Facts & Information:
Ragusa is a city that exists in two dimensions simultaneously. «Upper» Ragusa (Ragusa Superiore), built after the earthquake of 1693, and «lower» Ragusa — Ibla, clinging to the slope of a rocky ridge above two ravines. Ibla is a quiet labyrinth of baroque churches, narrow alleyways and elegant palaces. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
๐Ÿ”น Ragusa Ibla has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 as part of the «Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto» — together with seven other Sicilian towns.
๐Ÿ”น The Cathedral of San Giorgio — a masterpiece by architect Rosario Gagliardi — stands at the top of a staircase of 250 steps. Its pink baroque façade is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy.
๐Ÿ”น Ragusa Ibla is the filming location for the Inspector Montalbano TV series, based on the novels of Andrea Camilleri. Locals will happily point out the «Montalbano locations». ๐ŸŽฌ
๐Ÿ”น The Giardino Ibleo in the upper part of Ibla is the perfect spot for a panoramic photo over the ravine. Admission is free.
๐Ÿ”น Ragusa twice attempted to merge into a single city after 1693, but the aristocracy of Ibla refused to leave the old quarter — so the twin city has endured to this day.

๐Ÿ“œ History:
Settlements on the hills of what would become Ragusa date back to prehistoric times. After the Arab conquest of Sicily (9th century) and the Normans (11th century), the city flourished as an important trading centre. The catastrophic earthquake of 1693, which killed more than 60,000 people in eastern Sicily, razed Ragusa to the ground. The nobility insisted on rebuilding Ibla in its original location — producing the brilliant baroque ensemble now listed by UNESCO.

๐Ÿšข Getting There from Pozzallo Port:
Taxi / private transfer: 35–40 minutes, from EUR 55–70 for a group of up to 4 people. It is recommended to book in advance via TaxiPozzallo.com or Walk Around Sicily.
AST bus: Route No. 57 Pozzallo — Modica — Ragusa, approximately 50 minutes, ticket EUR 3–4. The AST stop on Via Lungomare Pietre Nere is 1.5 km from the port (15 minutes on foot or taxi EUR 5–8).
Trenitalia train: Pozzallo — Ragusa, ~57 minutes, ticket EUR 4–7. The railway station is 3 km from the port — a 5–7 minute taxi ride (EUR 8–10).
โš ๏ธ Buses and trains do not run on Sundays!

๐Ÿ’ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
Walking around the town: free (it is public urban space)
Cathedral of San Giorgio: EUR 2–3, daily 10:00–12:30 and 16:00–19:00
Giardino Ibleo: free, daily from morning to evening
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: plan a minimum of 2–2.5 hours to explore Ibla — every alleyway here is worth your attention.

๐Ÿซ 3. Modica — City of Chocolate and Baroque
๐Ÿ’ก Interesting Facts & Information:
Modica is a city of double fame: it is the birthplace of Nobel Prize-winning author Salvatore Quasimodo (1959) and home to the most unusual chocolate in Europe. The city is built on the slopes of two deep ravines and looks as if someone sculpted it straight from the rock. ๐ŸŒ‹
๐Ÿ”น Modican chocolate is the only chocolate in the world with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), produced according to an ancient Aztec recipe: cold-pressed cacao mass, sugar and spices — with no butter, milk or emulsifiers. The Spanish brought the recipe from Mexico in the 16th century, and it has not changed since. ๐Ÿซ
๐Ÿ”น The Cathedral of San Giorgio stands at the top of a 250-step staircase and is adorned with 12 statues of the Apostles. In front of it, embedded in the floor, is a unique sundial — a ray of sunlight through an opening in the dome indicates the date and time.
๐Ÿ”น Modica has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002, as has the entire Val di Noto.
๐Ÿ”น The city spreads between two ravines and has «upper» and «lower» sections connected by monumental staircases and narrow streets — a genuine three-dimensional labyrinth.

๐Ÿ“œ History:
Modica was the largest county in Sicily and one of the island's wealthiest cities in the Middle Ages. The year 1693 wiped the city off the map, but it was rebuilt in magnificent baroque style within a few decades. It is believed that it was here that the chocolate recipe, brought by the Spanish in the 16th century, first took its modern form — its production in the current style has been documented since 1746.

๐ŸŒŸ 4. Noto — «Capital of Sicilian Baroque»
๐Ÿ’ก Interesting Facts & Information:
Noto is, in the opinion of most travellers, the most beautiful city in Sicily. What makes it unique is that after the devastating earthquake of 1693 it was built entirely from scratch in a new location to a single architectural plan. All buildings are made from local honey-golden limestone, and on a sunny day the city literally glows. โ˜€๏ธ
๐Ÿ”น Noto has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Cicero, upon seeing the ancient city, called it «the greatest city in Sicily» — and the modern Noto has been described by UNESCO as «the culmination and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe».
๐Ÿ”น The main street Corso Vittorio Emanuele is an 800-metre parade of baroque masterpieces: the cathedral, the town hall palazzo Ducezio, churches with ornate balconies, aristocratic palaces one after another.
๐Ÿ”น The triumphal arch Porta Ferdinandea (1838) is decorated with three sculptures: a crenellated tower — symbol of power, a dog — of loyalty, a pelican — of sacrifice. These are the gates through which pedestrians traditionally enter the city.
๐Ÿ”น The dome of the Cathedral of San Nicolò collapsed during the earthquake of 1990. It took 10 years to rebuild — and today the cathedral is once again the jewel of the piazza.
๐Ÿ”น Noto featured in Michelangelo Antonioni's film «L'avventura» (1960) — one of the most important films of the 20th century.

๐Ÿ“œ History:
Ancient Noto (Netum) has existed since the Neolithic era on Mount Alveria, 8 km from the modern city. Arab conquerors made it the capital of one of Sicily's three administrative districts. The catastrophic earthquake of 1693, which killed more than 60,000 people, razed the ancient city to the ground. New Noto was built in the valley to the design of Giovanni Battista Landolina — with wide streets, piazzas and splendid baroque churches, all built from the same golden stone.

๐Ÿšข Getting There from Pozzallo Port:
Taxi / private transfer: 35–40 minutes, from EUR 50–65 for a group of up to 4 people.
AST bus: Route No. 50 Pozzallo — Noto, ~45 minutes, ticket EUR 3–4.
Town centre address: Corso Vittorio Emanuele, 96017 Noto (SR)

๐Ÿ’ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
Walking the Corso and piazza: free
Cathedral of San Nicolò: EUR 2, daily 9:00–19:00
Palazzo Ducezio (Town Hall): EUR 3, Mon–Sat 9:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00
๐Ÿ’ก Combine Noto with Modica — both are in the same direction from Pozzallo, and many private transfers offer a stop at both towns in a single outing.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ 5. Syracuse / Ortigia (Siracusa / Ortigia) — «The Greatest Greek City»
๐Ÿ’ก Interesting Facts & Information:
Syracuse is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, founded by Greek settlers from Corinth in 734 BC. Cicero himself called it «the greatest of Greek cities and the most beautiful of all». In the 5th century BC Syracuse was the most powerful city in the entire Mediterranean — stronger than Carthage and the equal of Athens. ๐Ÿบ
๐Ÿ”น Archimedes was born here (287 BC) — mathematician, physicist and engineer whose defensive machines kept Roman legions at bay for years. According to legend, he was killed by a Roman soldier who interrupted his geometric drawings. His last words: «Do not disturb my circles».
๐Ÿ”น Ortigia — the island heart of Syracuse — is where the Greek colony was preserved: the Temple of Apollo (6th century BC, the oldest Doric temple in Greece), and the Cathedral, which grew up around the columns of the 5th-century BC Temple of Athena.
๐Ÿ”น Neapolis (Parco Archeologico della Neapolis) — a Greek theatre (3rd century BC) seating 15,000 spectators where performances are still held; the Ear of Dionysius — a 23-metre artificial cave with astonishing acoustics; and a Roman amphitheatre.
๐Ÿ”น Syracuse has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.
๐Ÿ”น Syracuse was the capital of Sicily for almost a thousand years — right up to the Arab conquest in 878 AD.

๐Ÿ“œ History:
After its Greek founding, Syracuse passed through the rule of tyrants, including the brutal Dionysius I, at whose court Plato visited. Aeschylus and Pindar wrote their works here. The Romans besieged the city for years — and only treachery from within opened the gates. Under Byzantium, Syracuse briefly served as the capital of the entire empire. After Arab and Norman conquests the city became part of the Kingdom of Sicily. The earthquake of 1693 partially destroyed it, and the city was rebuilt in the baroque style, which today blends organically with the ancient ruins.

๐Ÿšข Getting There from Pozzallo Port:

Trenitalia train: Pozzallo — Modica — Syracuse, ~1 h 40 min, ticket EUR 7–10.

โ›ด๏ธ 6. Malta / Valletta — A Day Trip by Sea
๐Ÿ’ก Interesting Facts & Information:
Pozzallo is the only cruise port in Sicily from which you can visit another island state in a single day: from the quay to Valletta is just 90 km by sea and 1 hour 45 minutes by high-speed catamaran. This is a unique opportunity that tourists from no other port in the Mediterranean can enjoy. ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡น
๐Ÿ”น Valletta is the smallest capital city in the EU (area 0.8 km²) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. Every building in the centre is an architectural monument dating from the 16th–18th centuries.
๐Ÿ”น The city was built by the Knights Hospitaller of St John following the famous Siege of 1565, when the Maltese knights halted the westward advance of the Ottoman Empire.
๐Ÿ”น During World War II, Malta endured the heaviest bombing campaign after London, for which it received the highest award of the British Empire — the George Cross, depicted on the Maltese flag.
๐Ÿ”น From the steps of Upper Barrakka Gardens, one of the most beautiful views in the Mediterranean opens up — over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities' fortifications. Every day at 12:00 a cannon fires here — a tradition from the era of British rule. ๐Ÿ’ฅ
๐Ÿ”น The Virtu Ferries catamaran reaches speeds of up to 72 km/h — one of the fastest passenger vessels in the Mediterranean.

๐Ÿ“œ History:
The Maltese archipelago has been inhabited since 5000 BC — it is home to the world's oldest free-standing megalithic structures, older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spaniards, Knights Hospitaller, French, British — Malta has passed through all the great civilisations. The island gained independence only in 1964.

๐Ÿšข Getting There from Pozzallo Port:
Virtu Ferries ferry: directly from the quay at Pozzallo port → Valletta (Grand Harbour, Marsa). Journey time — 1 h 45 min. Sailings: 1–3 times per day depending on the season — check at virtuferries.com.
• Book your ticket in advance online — in season the ferry fills up quickly.

๐ŸŒŠ 7. Pozzallo: Seafront, Beaches & Old Town
๐Ÿ’ก Interesting Facts & Information:
Don't underestimate Pozzallo itself — if you don't feel like travelling far, the town can comfortably fill a few pleasant hours. Pozzallo's beaches are among the finest in Sicily. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ
๐Ÿ”น Pozzallo has four beaches that have received the «Blue Flag» award from the Foundation for Environmental Education — a recognition for water quality, environmental management and safety. These include Pietre Nere beach (black volcanic rocks) and Raganzino beach (golden sand).
๐Ÿ”น Piazza delle Rimembranze — the heart of the town, with palm trees, cafés and the art nouveau town hall (Palazzo Comunale Giorgio La Pira). Giorgio La Pira was born here — the Mayor of Florence and a delegate to the Italian Constituent Assembly.
๐Ÿ”น In 1954, Pozzallo was the site of the first underwater telephone cable in the Mediterranean — connecting Sicily and Malta. ๐Ÿ“ก
๐Ÿ”น In August, the town hosts Ferr' Agosto — a traditional summer festival that draws thousands of tourists from across Sicily. Some people genuinely sleep on the beach.

๐Ÿ“œ History:
Pozzallo has been known since the Arab era — it was then called «Marsa as-Deramฤซn» (port of dromedaries). The real development of the town is linked to the 14th-century construction of a grain loading complex — warehouses with quays for loading grain onto ships. The port of Pozzallo became one of the most important trading points in the county of Modica. The town gained autonomy from Modica only in 1829.

๐Ÿšข Getting There:
On foot from the terminal: 20–25 minutes to the central piazza and old town along the waterfront

โš ๏ธ Important to Know Before Going Ashore
๐Ÿ• The «all aboard» rule: you must return to the ship 60 minutes before departure. If you are late — the ship will not wait, and catching up with it at the next port will be at your own expense.
๐Ÿชช Documents: bring a photocopy of your passport + your Ship Card.
๐Ÿ’ถ Cash: carry EUR 50–80 in cash for small expenses (café toilets, market, bus tickets).
๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Clothing: wear comfortable shoes — you will walk 8–12 km over uneven cobblestones in medieval towns. For cathedrals — covered shoulders and knees are required.
๐ŸŒž Sun: in summer, temperatures can reach +35 °C. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential.
๐Ÿ“ฑ Connectivity and navigation: free Wi-Fi is available in the port. Download an offline Google Maps map for Sicily — in the hills the signal can be unreliable.
๐ŸšŒ Sundays: AST buses and Trenitalia trains barely run on Sundays. Plan for a taxi or private transfer.
๐Ÿ” Safety: Pozzallo is a quiet and safe town. In larger cities (Modica, Noto, Ragusa) keep a close eye on your belongings in crowds.
๐Ÿš— Car rental: if there are 3–4 of you and one holds a category B driving licence — renting a car directly from the port may be the most economical option for a self-guided tour of three cities.
