Cruises to Portoferraio (Elba Island)
Portoferraio — the jewel of the Tuscan Archipelago and the most romantic cruise port on the Tyrrhenian Sea. This is a city that preserves millennia of Mediterranean civilisation in its streets and stones. The capital of Elba Island is nestled on the northern shore, in a bay sheltered by headlands on three sides. Here, Etruscan iron-ore deposits stand alongside Napoleonic residences, Medici medieval fortresses command crystal-clear coves, and 147 kilometres of varied coastline offer more than 100 beaches — from golden sands to unique black shores coloured by iron oxides.
For the cruise traveller, Portoferraio is above all a port of call: small and medium-sized ships visit as part of Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean itineraries. Located in the province of Livorno, Tuscany, the city is celebrated for its unique blend of Napoleonic heritage, Renaissance fortifications, and the breathtaking nature of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. ๐ข

๐๏ธ History of Portoferraio — from the Etruscans to Napoleon
โณ Three millennia of maritime heritage
The history of Portoferraio is inseparable from Elba's iron ore. As far back as the 4th century BC, the Etruscans settled here, exploiting the iron deposits and beginning metal smelting. It was the columns of smoke rising from the smelting furnaces that led the Greeks to name the island Aethalia — "the smoky one". The Ligurians, who had lived here even earlier, called it Ilva — from which, according to one theory, the modern name "Elba" derives.
The Romans, who followed the Greeks, renamed the settlement Fabricia — "the forge" — turning it into a strategic naval base and the iron-production centre for the entire Roman Empire. Just a few kilometres from the modern town, the ruins of the magnificent Villa Romane delle Grotte survive — a grand I–II century AD country complex with sea-view terraces and a pool equipped with a heating and water-purification system.
โ๏ธ The Age of the Medici: the birth of Cosmopoli
Throughout the Middle Ages, the island passed from Pisa to Genoa, from the dukes of Piombino to the Spanish Habsburgs. The decisive turning point came in 1548, when Cosimo I de' Medici, Duke of Tuscany, acquired the island and immediately set about building a fortified city. He christened the new settlement Cosmopoli — "the cradle of civilisation and culture". The fortifications erected at that time — Forte Falcone, Forte Stella, and the Linguella Tower — still form the iconic harbour panorama recognised by all who enter the bay from the sea.
Soon, the pragmatic name "Port of Iron" — Porto Ferraio — displaced the ceremonial "Cosmopoli", cementing the commercial identity of the city. It was from here that the Medici shipped iron ore that enriched the Florentine Duchy for two centuries.
๐ Napoleon on Elba: ten months of grandeur and exile
The most celebrated chapter in Portoferraio's history is linked to the name of Napoleon Bonaparte. Following his abdication in 1814, the victorious allied powers granted the former French Emperor sovereignty over Elba as an independent principality. On 4 May 1814, Napoleon stepped ashore at Portoferraio and for almost ten months ruled the island as its sovereign.
Despite the involuntary nature of his residence, Napoleon acted with characteristic energy: he modernised the road network, reformed the mining industry, developed agriculture, and increased wine production and exports. He transformed a modest house between two fortresses into the elegant Palazzina dei Mulini — his official residence — and 5 km from town he fitted out the summer Villa San Martino. On 26 February 1815, taking advantage of the absence of the British fleet, Napoleon secretly left the island and sailed back to France to begin the Hundred Days — his final rise before permanent exile on Saint Helena. ๐๏ธ
โ Port of Portoferraio — gateway to the Tuscan island
๐ Port structure and features
The port of Portoferraio is the main maritime gateway to Elba Island, operating under the North Tyrrhenian Sea Port Network Authority. The harbour is situated in a well-sheltered bay and is divided into several functional zones. The primary berth for cruise ships is the Alto Fondale ("Deep Water") pier, located directly in the historic city centre adjacent to a spacious coach parking area. When Alto Fondale is occupied, ships berth at the Calata Italia quay — at the southern end of the port, close to the ferry terminal. A separate picturesque marina, the Darsena Medicea, with approximately 150 berths, serves yachts and small craft.
The port of Portoferraio holds a unique navigational distinction: it is the only port in Italy where vessels are required to keep to the left side of the channel, both on entry and on departure — contrary to the standard right-hand rule observed everywhere else. This tradition developed due to the narrow fairway between the ancient fortress walls. โ
๐ข What type of ships call at Portoferraio
Portoferraio is a port of call for small and medium-sized cruise ships. The depth at the Alto Fondale pier accommodates vessels carrying up to 2,000–3,000 passengers. Larger ships anchor in the bay and ferry passengers ashore by tender. During the tourist season (April–October), regular calls are made by ships of MSC Cruises, Silversea, SeaDream Yacht Club, Windstar Cruises, Princess Cruises, Seabourn, and other leading cruise brands.
๐ข Which cruise lines visit Portoferraio
Situated at the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Portoferraio is a popular port of call on Tyrrhenian-Ligurian and Central Mediterranean itineraries. Ships calling here include those of MSC Cruises, Silversea, Princess Cruises, Windstar Cruises, SeaDream Yacht Club, Seabourn, Celebrity Cruises, as well as numerous luxury yachts. ๐ Thanks to the compact size of the bay and the immediate proximity of landmarks to the pier, Portoferraio is especially sought after by luxury and yacht cruise operators.
๐ก Interesting facts about Elba and Portoferraio
Your acquaintance with the island will be richer with a few lesser-known details:
๐๏ธ Elba is Italy's third-largest island. After Sicily and Sardinia, covering 224 km², it is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and the most geologically diverse: the eastern part of the island dates back 400 million years, while the granite massif of the west formed just 11 million years ago.
๐ข A unique navigational rule applies here. The port of Portoferraio is the only port in Italy where ships must keep to the left on both entry and exit.
๐ท Elba has been producing wine for more than 2,000 years. Elba Aleatico Passito DOCG is the first wine of the Tuscan Archipelago to be awarded the Guaranteed and Controlled Designation of Origin status; it is made from sun-dried Aleatico grapes using a method championed by Cosimo de' Medici himself.
๐ญ Napoleon personally founded a theatre in Portoferraio. The former Church of Carmine was converted by the Emperor into the Teatro dei Vigilanti in 1814 — to bring cultural entertainment to the islanders during his exile.
๐ฟ Much of the island is a protected reserve. A large portion of Elba forms part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, home to Eleonora's falcons, Eurasian blackcaps, wild boars, and dolphins.
๐๏ธ Some of Elba's beaches are black. Thanks to ancient iron deposits, the coastal sediments around Rio Marina have acquired a unique dark hue — beaches of this kind exist nowhere else in Tuscany.
๐ The island of Montecristo inspired Alexandre Dumas. The neighbouring uninhabited island of Montecristo, visible from Elba on a clear day, served as the model for the legendary treasure island in the novel The Count of Monte Cristo.
๐ Portoferraio is the only city in Italy founded and named by Cosimo I de' Medici. No other Tuscan ruler left behind such a cohesive architectural ensemble that has survived virtually intact to the present day.
๐ Top sights of Portoferraio and Elba Island — must-see for the cruise visitor
A cruise ship's stay in Portoferraio typically lasts between 6 and 10 hours. The town is compact and the central sights are easily explored on foot. For those wishing to discover more of the island, buses and bicycle rental are available. Below is a brief overview of the key locations.
๐๏ธ Palazzina dei Mulini — Napoleon's official residence during his exile, situated between Forte Falcone and Forte Stella. The two-storey villa retains its original Empire-style furnishings, the Emperor's personal library (including volumes by Voltaire, La Fontaine, and Plutarch), and a garden with views over the open sea. Today it houses the National Museum of Napoleonic Residences.
๐ฐ Villa San Martino — Napoleon's summer residence 5 km from town, which he personally converted from a large farmhouse. It contains his collection of engravings and the celebrated Egyptian Room, decorated with motifs brought back from his African campaign. Part of the same National Museum.
๐ฐ Forte Falcone and Forte Stella — the two principal Medici fortresses, built in 1548 by architects Camerini and Belluzzi. Forte Falcone, perched on the highest hill, offers a panoramic view of the sea and the town. The star-shaped Forte Stella — with its 18th-century lighthouse — commands a view over the entire harbour. Ancient patrol walkways running along the walls connect the two fortresses.
โช Church of the Misericordia — a dimly lit 17th-century Baroque church that houses Napoleon's death mask. One of the most remarkable museum artefacts on the island.
๐๏ธ Teatro dei Vigilanti — a former church converted by Napoleon into a theatre in 1814. Today it is an active performance venue hosting plays and cultural events.
๐ Biodola Beach — the finest beach near Portoferraio, sheltered by a green hill and pine trees, with crystal-clear water and a gently shelving seabed. Reachable by bus from the port in 15–20 minutes.
๐๏ธ Castello del Volterraio — a medieval fortress on a rocky summit 6 km from town, considered the best-preserved on the island. The bird's-eye view of Elba and the neighbouring Archipelago islands is breathtaking. Accessible via hiking trails of varying difficulty.
๐ฟ Villa Romane delle Grotte — the ruins of a magnificent Roman villa from the I–II century AD, a few kilometres from town. Excavations in 1960 revealed a vast complex with sea-view terraces and a heated pool.
โฐ๏ธ Monte Capanne (1,019 m) — the highest point of the Tuscan Archipelago; the summit is reached by cable car (funivia) from the ancient village of Marciana. On a clear day, Corsica, Sardinia, and mainland Tuscany are all visible from the top.
โจ Why choose a cruise to Portoferraio
Portoferraio is a rare port where every hour ashore is filled with meaning.
First, there are no queues or mass-tourism crowds: unlike Florence or Rome, Elba welcomes cruise guests at a human pace, in the atmosphere of authentic Tuscan island culture. ๐ฟ
Second, the sights are right at the pier: stepping off the gangway, you are already standing beneath the walls of Napoleon's Palazzina and the Medici fortresses — no transfer required. ๐๏ธ
Third, Elba offers a unique combination: beach relaxation, gastronomy (DOCG wines, seafood cuisine), the nature of the National Park, and priceless cultural heritage — all in one place. ๐ท

How to Get to the Cruise Port in Portoferraio (Elba Island), Italy
Portoferraio is the main town and the only cruise port on the island of Elba, nestled in the Tuscan Archipelago. Despite the island's modest size, it attracts the most prestigious cruise lines: Windstar, Silversea, Seabourn and Hapag-Lloyd all call here regularly. The defining feature of this port is that Elba is an island, which means the journey to your cruise ship almost always involves a ferry crossing from the mainland. Below you will find a detailed, step-by-step guide covering every arrival option, up-to-date prices and expert advice from the cruise specialists at Four Gates Group. ๐ฏ
๐ Where Is the Portoferraio Cruise Port Located
The port of Portoferraio is a compact yet well-organised maritime hub with several berths serving different purposes. Cruise ships moor at the Alto Fondale Quay (Banchina Alto Fondale) — the port's only deep-water berth, situated right alongside the historic town centre.
โ Alto Fondale Quay — the main cruise berth:
• Accommodates vessels up to 200 metres in length
• Confirmed schedule for 2026: 110 cruise ship calls (up from 85 in the previous year)
• Operates in mixed mode: when no cruise ship is in port, the berth may be used by ferries
• Lines calling here include Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Silversea, Windstar, Seabourn and others
โ Anchorage (rada) — for larger ships:
• If a vessel exceeds the capacity of the Alto Fondale berth, it anchors in the bay
• Passengers are ferried ashore by tender boats
• Embarkation and disembarkation takes place at the Raccordo Alto Fondale pier
๐ GPS Address: Banchina Alto Fondale, Calata Italia, 57037 Portoferraio (LI), Italy
๐ถ Distance to the town centre: the berth is located virtually in the heart of Portoferraio — from here to the main square and the old town is literally a 5–10 minute walk
โ Important: the exact method of disembarkation (dockside or by tender) depends on the size of your ship. Check the official website of your cruise line or your boarding pass 48–72 hours before arrival. The cruise company always notifies passengers in advance.

Portoferraio port and the ferry crossing are generally accessible for passengers with limited mobility, though there are some important considerations:
โ
The ferry companies Moby, Toremar and Blu Navy operate vessels equipped with lifts and dedicated areas for wheelchair users
โ
Autolinee Toscane buses feature low-floor access and designated wheelchair spaces
โ
Taxis in Portoferraio — request a specially equipped vehicle when booking
โ ๏ธ Tender disembarkation: if your ship anchors in the bay and passengers are taken ashore by tender, this process can be challenging for wheelchair users or passengers with limited mobility. You must inform your cruise line of your needs at the time of booking; the company may offer priority assistance or individual support
โ
Port staff are always on hand to assist with boarding — please inform your cruise company in advance
โฐ When to Arrive at Portoferraio Cruise Port
Because the route to Elba includes a ferry crossing, you need to allow considerably more time than at a standard cruise port:
๐ General rule: plan to arrive in Portoferraio at least 3–3.5 hours before your ship's departure
๐ Allow for the ferry crossing: the Piombino crossing takes approximately 1 hour, plus waiting time and boarding (30–60 min)
๐ Allow for traffic: in August and on public holidays, roads to Piombino and ferry queues can cause significant delays
๐ Tender ports: if tender disembarkation is scheduled, the process takes longer; follow the instructions provided by the ship's crew
โ Boarding deadline: typically 60–90 minutes before departure. The ship will not wait. All Four Gates Group vouchers state the exact boarding time for your specific cruise.
๐ก Expert Tips from Four Gates Group
Over the years of working with Elba and Tuscany, our cruise specialists have compiled tried-and-tested advice for a perfect start to your cruise:
๐
Arrive a day before your cruise. Elba deserves a full day of exploration: the old town of Portoferraio with its Medici fortresses, winding alleyways and waterfront restaurants with bay views — all of this is best savoured without any rush.
๐ข Book your ferry well in advance. In August, crossings to Elba fill up weeks ahead, especially if you are travelling with a car. Even without a vehicle, a pre-booked ticket removes any anxiety about availability on the day.
๐ Send your large luggage to the ship on the mainland. Some cruise lines offer a service to collect luggage from your hotel in Piombino or Pisa and deliver it directly to your cabin — enquire about this option when booking.
๐ Travel early in the morning. The ferry terminal in Piombino can become very congested in August during the afternoon. Early sailings are more comfortable and less crowded.
๐ฑ Download the apps in advance: Trenitalia or Omio (rail), Moby/Toremar (ferry), Google Maps with an offline map of Elba and the Tuscan coast.
๐ท Try the local Elba DOC wine. If you have time before boarding, take a stroll through the old town and stop at one of the waterfront cafés: the island's wines are celebrated throughout Tuscany.
๐จ Stay in Piombino or Portoferraio. Spending the night immediately before the cruise in Piombino (on the mainland) or in Portoferraio (on the island) is the most sensible choice for a stress-free departure.

Sights and Attractions of Portoferraio: A Complete Guide for Cruise Passengers
Portoferraio — the main city of Elba Island, where every stone bears the imprint of the Medici, Napoleon, and thousands of years of maritime history. Mighty 16th-century fortresses, two residences of the French Emperor, turquoise beaches with white pebbles, and DOC-recognised vineyards — all await you here. For a cruise passenger with 8–10 hours ashore, the key is to plan the right route. Below is a tried-and-tested guide to the key attractions, with 2026 prices, opening hours and precise directions from the Alto Fondale pier to every sight. ๐ฏ
๐ฐ 1. Medici Fortifications: Forte Falcone and Forte Stella (Fortezze Medicee)
๐ก Interesting Facts and Background:
The Medici Fortifications are one of the most complete and best-preserved examples of a Renaissance fortified city in the world. When Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de' Medici decided to found a new city here in 1548, he named it Cosmopoli — "the city of Cosimo". It was then that construction of this monumental defensive complex began. ๐๏ธ
๐น The complex includes Forte Falcone — the highest point of the old city — and Forte Stella with its famous 1788 lighthouse standing 25 metres tall, still used as a navigational landmark for vessels today.
๐น Between the two forts lie four bastions of the "Land Attack Front" (Fronte di Terra), built on different levels: Veneziano, Casino di Mezzo, delle Palle and della Cornacchia. The walkway connecting them stretches about 500 metres, and the views over the harbour are breathtaking. ๐
๐น In 1553, the newly built fortifications withstood an attack by the ferocious Ottoman corsair Turgut Reis (Dragut) — thanks to them, the city was left unscathed while the rest of Tuscany's island towns were plundered.
๐น Between Forte Falcone and Forte Stella stands the Bastione dei Mulini, where Napoleon later established his official residence — the Palazzina dei Mulini.
๐น Audio guides and AR tours (augmented reality) are available, activated via QR code. The architectural trail takes visitors through every level of the fortifications and into the casemate halls.
๐ History:
In April 1548, architects Giovanni Battista Bellucci and Giovanni Camerini were ordered to build a defensive system for the new city that Cosimo de' Medici was founding on the island's northern shore. The works were later continued by the renowned architect Bernardo Buontalenti.
Within a few years the complex gained Forte Falcone, Forte Stella and the Torre della Linguella — three key points of the defensive ring. In subsequent years the "Land Front" was added — four bastions sealing the city from the island side. Together these structures formed one of the most accomplished fortified urban systems of the Renaissance era.
In the 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte himself found shelter within these walls: between the two forts, in the Palazzina dei Mulini, he established his official residence during his first exile on Elba. Today the fortification complex is a beautifully restored landmark and the principal museum attraction of Portoferraio.
๐ข How to Get There from Alto Fondale Pier:
• On foot (most convenient): the Alto Fondale pier is located right at the foot of the old town. From there to Forte Falcone — 10–15 minutes uphill through the ancient streets.

๐ 2. Palazzina dei Mulini — Napoleon's Official Residence (Villa dei Mulini)
๐ก Interesting Facts and Background:
The Palazzina dei Mulini is the place where Napoleon Bonaparte attempted to recreate, in miniature, the atmosphere of the French court. The name comes from four windmills that stood here until 1724. Perched on the cliffs between Forte Falcone and Forte Stella, overlooking the sea, this was the building he chose for his official residence. ๐
๐น The building dates from 1724, and in May 1814 Napoleon personally supervised its renovation to bring the interiors in line with an emperor's tastes. The refurbishment took just a few weeks — remarkable speed!
๐น The villa's rooms preserve original Napoleonic-era furniture, personal effects, and Napoleon's library, containing volumes by Voltaire, La Fontaine and Plutarch that he brought with him and later donated to Portoferraio.
๐น From the Palazzina's terrace there is a panoramic view over the harbour and the Tyrrhenian Sea — Napoleon could watch every ship entering the port. ๐
๐น Napoleon spent only 9 months and 19 days on Elba — from 4 May 1814 to 26 February 1815 — yet managed to modernise roads, reform the administration and establish a theatre.
๐น The Palazzina is part of the National Museum of Napoleonic Residences, which also includes the country retreat of Villa San Martino.
๐ History:
After his abdication in 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte received the island of Elba as a sovereign territory under the terms of the Treaty of Fontainebleau. The former First Consul became an island monarch — with several hundred guardsmen and a few thousand subjects. He arrived in Portoferraio on 4 May 1814 and immediately threw himself into action.
The Palazzina dei Mulini, which had existed since 1724, was converted by Napoleon into his personal residence. Although the building was nowhere near the size of his former palaces, he spared no effort to make the interiors suit his habits. His mother Letizia Bonaparte and sister Paolina also came to stay.
In February 1815, learning of unrest in France and the unfavourable decisions of the Congress of Vienna, Napoleon secretly sailed from the island with 1,100 men — the Hundred Days had begun. He never returned to Elba. Today the Palazzina is a state museum under Italy's Ministry of Culture.

๐ฟ 3. Villa San Martino — Napoleon's Country Residence (Villa San Martino)
๐ก Interesting Facts and Background:
If the Palazzina dei Mulini was Napoleon's official "city apartment", then Villa San Martino was his rural retreat — a quiet country refuge in a green valley 4 km from town. This is where he could enjoy true rest, far from official ceremony. ๐ฟ
๐น The most beautiful room in the villa is the so-called "Egyptian Room" (Camera egizia), decorated with frescoes featuring Egyptian motifs celebrating Napoleon's victories in the Egyptian Campaign of 1798–1799.
๐น The villa preserves personal effects, engravings and 19th-century furniture.
๐น In front of the villa stands the Neoclassical Demidoff Gallery — a monumental structure built in the mid-19th century by the Russian aristocrat and Napoleon's relative by marriage, Anatoly Demidoff, who purchased the property after the Emperor's departure. The gallery strikingly contrasts with the modest little villa behind it, and visitors often mistake one for the other. ๐
๐น Surrounding the villa are forests and vineyards of central Elba with views over the Tyrrhenian Sea.
๐น Together with the Palazzina dei Mulini it forms the National Museum of Napoleonic Residences.
๐ History:
Napoleon purchased the estate in June 1814 to have a quiet spot for relaxation and management of the island's internal affairs. He personally planned the layout of the garden and interior décor. The house regularly welcomed guests — diplomats, local notables, and family.
After Napoleon's departure in 1815 the villa stood neglected for a long time. In 1851 it was purchased by Anatoly Demidoff, husband of Napoleon's niece Mathilde. He erected a grandiose neoclassical gallery in front of the villa to fittingly commemorate his illustrious relative. After the Second World War the property passed to the state, which opened a museum here.

๐๏ธ 4. Beaches of Portoferraio: Le Ghiaie, Sansone and Biodola
๐ก Interesting Facts and Background:
Elba is an island with 147 km of coastline and more than 70 beaches. Some of the finest are clustered around Portoferraio: from the town beach of Le Ghiaie just minutes from the port, to the striking Sansone with its white pebbles and azure water. ๐๏ธ
๐น Le Ghiaie — Portoferraio's town beach, closest to the port (10 min walk). White pebbles, turquoise water, easy access, sun loungers and parasols for hire. Panoramic views of the fortresses and lighthouse.
๐น Sansone — one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean: fine white pebbles, limestone cliffs, crystal-clear water. Perfect for snorkelling. It is reached by a short steep path — flat-soled footwear is essential. ๐คฟ
๐น Biodola — 600 metres of golden sand in a sheltered bay 8 km from Portoferraio. One of the best spots for families with children: shallow water, calm conditions, full facilities (sun loungers, bars, restaurants). Sunsets here look towards Corsica and Capraia. ๐
๐น La Paolina beach is named after Napoleon's sister Paolina Bonaparte, who loved to swim here. Nearby lies a small islet you can swim out to.
๐น All of Elba's beaches are celebrated for exceptionally clean water — the island is part of the Tuscan Archipelago, home to one of Europe's largest marine national parks.
๐ History:
Elba is Italy's third-largest island after Sicily and Sardinia. It was first settled by the Etruscans, then by the Romans, who were drawn by its iron ore deposits. According to legend, the poet Virgil derived the island's ancient name "Ilva" from the Latin word for iron. The island's rich iron ore deposits made Elba a bone of contention between Genoese merchants, pirates and various rulers throughout the Middle Ages.
Today the mining industry has long given way to tourism, and the island's unspoilt natural environment is the result of strict protection within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Underwater visibility in some coves reaches 30 metres.
๐ข How to Get There from Alto Fondale Pier:
• Le Ghiaie — on foot: 8–10 minutes from the pier along the waterfront
• Sansone — taxi: 10 minutes, EUR 10–12
• Biodola — taxi: 15–20 minutes, EUR 15–20. Also by Autolinee Toscane bus (summer beach route Marebus)
๐ถ Admission and Opening Hours:
• Beach entry: free (equipment zones — sun loungers and parasols EUR 10–20 per day depending on season)
• Beaches are open around the clock
โ ๏ธ Note: in high summer (July–August) the beaches are very crowded. If your cruise calls in May–June or September, the beach experience will be significantly more comfortable.
๐ท 5. Elba Wine: Tasting Aleatico DOCG and Ansonica
๐ก Interesting Facts and Background:
Elba is an island with two thousand years of winemaking tradition. The ancient Roman scholar Pliny the Elder described the island as "rich in wines". Today more than 10 DOC wine varieties are produced here, and one of them — Aleatico Passito dell'Elba DOCG — carries Italy's highest quality designation. ๐ท
๐น Aleatico Passito DOCG is a rich passito wine made from semi-dried Aleatico black grapes. Ruby red, with aromas of cherry and violet, sweet but never cloying. Napoleon used to bring it to Paris as a personal gift.
๐น Among the white wines, Ansonica stands out — a fragrant dry wine from the eponymous grape variety, perfectly paired with seafood. Local winemakers say its bouquet "smells of the sea itself".
๐น Vermentino and Elba Bianco DOC are two further white wines popular with visitors.
๐น The most celebrated winery near Portoferraio is La Chiusa (tenerlachiusa.it): a historic 17th-century estate with views over the bay. According to local legend, Napoleon himself once visited. Tastings by prior booking.
๐น Every autumn, the Centro De Laugier in Portoferraio hosts the Aleatico Festival, showcasing wines from virtually every winery on the island. Open to all.
๐ History:
Viticulture on Elba dates back to the Etruscans, who traded wine with the mainland via Portoferraio's ports as early as the 6th–5th centuries BC. The Romans continued the tradition, and during the Imperial era Elban wine was loaded directly onto ships from the shore — underwater archaeologists still find fragments of amphorae today.
In the Middle Ages and the Medici era, more than a quarter of all arable land on the island was under vines. Today the vineyard area has shrunk to around 200 hectares, yet wine quality has risen alongside growing attention to native grape varieties. In 2010 Aleatico Passito dell'Elba was awarded DOCG status.
๐ข How to Get There from Alto Fondale Pier:
• La Chiusa (nearest winery): taxi 15–20 minutes, EUR 15–20. Advance booking for tastings is required at tenerlachiusa.it
• Tasting tour (jeep excursion through the vineyards): organised by island tour operators; includes transport, a vineyard tour and tasting of 4–5 wines with local nibbles. From EUR 35–50 per person
๐ถ Pricing:
• Winery tasting (without tour): EUR 15–25 per person depending on the winery and number of wines
• E-bike tour with tasting: from EUR 40 per person
โ ๏ธ Tip: wineries generally receive visitors by appointment. If your cruise falls between May and October, book your tasting at least a week in advance.
๐ณ 6. Portoferraio Old Town and Market
๐ก Interesting Facts and Background:
Portoferraio's old town is a living medieval labyrinth of narrow streets, hidden courtyards and small squares where time seems to have stood still. No mass-market souvenir shops here — only genuine family-run stores, osterias and fish restaurants. ๐๏ธ
๐น Piazza della Repubblica — the main square with arcades and cafés. It was here that Napoleon solemnly received a delegation of islanders in 1815, before his departure.
๐น Portoferraio Market (Mercato Coperto) — a covered market in the town centre. Every morning it offers fresh fish, local cheeses, olive oil, honey and wine. Open daily except Sunday, 07:00–13:00.
๐น Teatro dei Vigilanti — the oldest theatre on the island, inaugurated on 24 January 1815 by Napoleon's order. Included in the Cosmopoli Card. ๐ญ
๐น Darsena Medicea — a picturesque marina with yachts in the very heart of the old town. In the evenings locals gather here for the traditional passeggiata — the customary evening stroll along the waterfront. ๐ฅ๏ธ
๐น The old streets still preserve fragments of original Etruscan and Roman walls — the island was inhabited since antiquity.
๐ History:
Although Cosimo de' Medici founded the new city in 1548, people had lived on this shore for thousands of years. The Etruscans mined iron, and the Romans established several villas. After the fall of Rome the island passed from the Lombards to Moorish corsairs, from the Republic of Pisa to Genoa, until Cosimo gained control of it from Spain in 1546.
The medieval fishing settlement of Ferraiะพ became the foundation of a new "ideal Renaissance city" — with straight streets, a town hall and fortresses. This 16th-century urban layout has largely survived and still defines the character of the old town today.
๐ข How to Get There from Alto Fondale Pier:
• On foot: 2–5 minutes — the pier is located directly beside the old city gate (Porta a Mare). This is the closest attraction to the port
๐ถ Pricing:
• Old town stroll: free
• Market: free entry, open Mon–Sat 07:00–13:00
• Teatro dei Vigilanti: included in Cosmopoli Card (EUR 20)
• Tourist road train (June–August): EUR 5, tours the town and fortifications, 45–60 minutes
๐ 7. Tuscan Archipelago National Park and Snorkelling
๐ก Interesting Facts and Background:
Elba is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park — one of the largest marine protected areas in the Mediterranean Sea. The underwater world here is richer than at most Mediterranean resorts. ๐
๐น Near Sansone and Sottobomba beaches, the water is crystal clear with visibility up to 30 metres. Sea urchins, sea bream, moray eels, octopuses and rays can all be observed without scuba equipment — just a mask and snorkel.
๐น Near Capo d'Enfola, the Tuscan Archipelago Snorkelling Trail offers a marked route along the rocky shoreline.
๐น For divers: several shipwrecks lie in the waters around the island, including a 1st-century BC Roman merchant vessel near Procchio at just 3 metres depth — its cargo of amphorae remains on the seabed to this day.
๐น From the shore at Sansone, the view stretches to the island of Capraia and, on a clear day, all the way to Corsica. ๐๏ธ
๐น Mask and fin rental at most equipped beaches — EUR 5–10 per day.
๐ข How to Get There from Alto Fondale Pier:
• Taxi to Sansone: 10–12 minutes, EUR 10–12
• Kayaking tours from the port: departing directly from Alto Fondale pier; sign up on the shore or book online in advance
๐ถ Pricing:
• Beach and snorkelling: free
• Mask and fin rental: EUR 5–10

โ ๏ธ Important Information Before Going Ashore
๐ "All aboard" rule: you must be back on board at least 60 minutes before departure. If you miss the ship — it will not wait, and travelling to the next port to catch up will be entirely at your own expense.
๐ชช Documents: carry a photocopy of your passport and your Ship Card.
๐ถ Cash: have EUR 30–60 in cash — small trattorias and market stalls do not always accept cards.
๐ Footwear: sturdy, non-slip shoes are essential — the path up to the fortresses and the trail to Sansone beach are quite steep. Covered shoulders and knees are required when visiting churches.
๐ฑ Internet: free Wi-Fi is available at old-town cafés and in the port area. Download an offline Google Maps map in advance — mobile signal can be weak at some beaches.
๐ Safety: Portoferraio is one of the safest harbour towns in the Mediterranean. Pickpocketing is rare, but standard precautions are always worthwhile.
โ๏ธ Sun protection: summer temperatures reach +32 °C, and the glare off white pebbles and water intensifies UV exposure. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential.
๐ซ Tuesday: the Palazzina dei Mulini is closed; plan your visit on any other day. The market is closed on Sunday.
๐ Rough sea: on stormy days large cruise ships may use a tender service (passengers are ferried ashore on small tender boats). Tender operations are suspended in strong winds — check with the ship's crew for updates.
