Cruises from Monfalcone
Monfalcone — the northernmost city of the Mediterranean basin and the birthplace of the world's largest cruise ships. This is a city where two seas meet — the Adriatic and the ancient karst — where a medieval fortress gazes down upon shipbuilding slipways, and where giant liners sail out through the shipyard gates every year to travel to every corner of the globe. Monfalcone is situated in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region at the far north-eastern tip of Italy — between Trieste and Venice, between the Alps and the Adriatic, between Western and Eastern Europe.
For the cruise traveller, Monfalcone is a unique departure point. It is from here that MSC Cruises launches its seasonal Mediterranean voyages, and it is here, at the Fincantieri shipyards, that some of the largest and most advanced cruise ships in the world are built. Monfalcone's passenger port operates as a turnaround port — a homeport — primarily for MSC sailings, making this compact industrial city the true cradle of the cruise industry. ๐ข

๐๏ธ History of Monfalcone — from a medieval fortress to the capital of shipbuilding
โณ From the Celts to Fincantieri
The history of Monfalcone is, above all, the history of a crossroads. The city stands where the karst plateau drops steeply to the sea, where the Alps meet the Adriatic, and where Latin Europe collides with the Slavic and Germanic worlds. The name "Monfalcone" translates literally from Italian as "mountain of the falcon" — Mons Falconis — derived from the Latin name of the hill upon which a fortress has stood since ancient times. The earliest traces of human settlement here date to prehistoric times: the karst plateau above the city preserves the remains of ancient fortified villages — castellieri — from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Later the Romans held sway here, leaving behind the ruins of villas and a thermal complex — Terme Romane — part of which has survived to the present day. In the Middle Ages the hill above the town was dominated by the Rocca fortress, built around 490 AD by Theodoric, King of the Ostrogoths, and subsequently rebuilt several times during wars with the Turks and Venetian rivals.
โ From the Venetian Republic to the shipbuilding capital
For several centuries Monfalcone was part of the Venetian Republic and then of the Habsburg Monarchy, which transformed it into an important industrial centre. It was during this period that the city acquired its distinctive character: a blend of maritime culture, Central European discipline and Mediterranean temperament. After the First World War, Monfalcone passed to the Kingdom of Italy along with the entire Venezia Giulia region, while the Second World War once again made the city an arena of fierce fighting — the battles in the karst zone between Monfalcone and the Isonzo River are written into the most dramatic pages of that conflict. The true transformation of Monfalcone came on 3 April 1908, when the Cosulich family founded the Cantiere Navale Triestino shipyard in the Panzano district. From that day forward, the city has been inseparably linked to ships. Transatlantic liners, submarines and aircraft carriers were built here, and after 1984 — exclusively cruise ships. Today the Fincantieri yard at Monfalcone is the largest in the group by area and capacity, and remains one of the most respected shipbuilding enterprises on the planet. ๐ญ
โ The Port of Monfalcone — the northernmost cruise port in the Mediterranean
๐ Scale and structure of the port
The Port of Monfalcone forms part of the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority (AdSP) and combines industrial, commercial and passenger sectors. The Fincantieri shipyard occupies approximately 787,000 m², of which more than 252,000 m² are covered production facilities. The passenger terminal is located separately and receives cruise ships in the Panzano basin. Cruise liners berth at Marina Hannibal — the main passenger pier in the Panzano harbour. This is where the access gate to the cruise terminal is located, at Via Vittorio Veneto. The port is equipped with all the infrastructure required for boarding and disembarkation: document checks, baggage drop-off, transfer services and a car park (advance booking required).
๐ข When did cruises from Monfalcone begin
Monfalcone began operating as a turnaround cruise port in 2022. The first cruise departed on 1 May 2022: following a pandemic-enforced pause of more than two years, the liner MSC Musica sailed from here. This was made possible in part by the restrictions imposed on large ships berthing in Venice, which prompted MSC Cruises to use Monfalcone and Trieste as alternative homeports. Since then, Monfalcone has received seasonal sailings every year, predominantly from May to November.
๐ข Which cruise lines operate from Monfalcone
At present, the principal cruise operator from Monfalcone is MSC Cruises. The port hosts MSC's seasonal programmes offering seven-day itineraries to the ports of the Eastern Mediterranean: Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and Israel. In addition to cruise departures, the port is the annual venue for Fincantieri's ship launch ceremonies — landmark events attended by representatives of the world's leading cruise brands, including Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, TUI Cruises and many others. ๐
๐ก Interesting facts about Monfalcone and its port
Getting to know the city becomes richer with a few lesser-known details:
๐ณ๏ธ Monfalcone is the "mother" of the world's largest liners. MSC Seashore, MSC Seascape, Sun Princess, Star Princess, Norwegian Aqua and dozens of other giants were all built here — more than one hundred cruise ships in total since the early 1990s.
๐บ๏ธ The northernmost port of the Mediterranean. Monfalcone is officially considered the northernmost city of the Mediterranean basin — it is here that the Adriatic Sea reaches its furthest northern point.
๐ญ The Fincantieri yard at Monfalcone is the largest in the group. The facility covers more than 78 hectares and is capable of building three large vessels simultaneously.
โ The yard's first ship was launched in 1908. Over more than 115 years, thousands of vessels have been built here — from the transatlantic liners of the 1920s to the most advanced LNG cruise ships of today.
๐ฐ The Rocca fortress has stood since the 5th century. It survived the Ostrogoths, the Venetians, the Habsburgs and two world wars, and today stands as the city's foremost symbol, visible from the decks of liners departing the port.
โ๏ธ The airport is 5 minutes from the port. Trieste Airport (TRS) is literally a few kilometres from the cruise terminal — making this one of the most convenient airport connections in the Mediterranean.
๐ธ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ท One city, three cultures. Italian, Slovenian and Friulian cultural traditions coexist organically in Monfalcone, lending the city a uniquely multicultural character.
๐ฟ A karst plateau above the city. Just beyond Monfalcone begins the famous Karst — a unique rocky landscape of caves, hidden valleys and ancient fortifications stretching across the border into Slovenia.
๐ Top sights of Monfalcone and surroundings — must-see for the cruise traveller
A ship's call at Monfalcone or a pre-cruise day in the area offers a wonderful opportunity to explore both the city itself and its outstanding neighbours. Below is a brief overview of the key locations that define the character of this region.
๐ฐ Rocca di Monfalcone — a medieval hilltop fortress built during the reign of the Ostrogothic King Theodoric. Today its walls house a museum with a speleological exhibition and magnificent views over the city, the Adriatic and the shipbuilding docks. It is Monfalcone's principal tourist landmark.
โ MuCa — Shipbuilding Museum (Museo della Cantieristica) — Italy's only museum dedicated to shipbuilding. Located in the former workers' hotel at the Panzano yard, it houses unique ship models, photo archives, original shipyard equipment and multimedia reconstructions of the liner-building process. The museum organises combined guided tours to the active Fincantieri slipways.
โ๏ธ First World War Theme Park (Parco Tematico della Grande Guerra) — on the karst hills above the city, original trenches, dugouts and positions from the bloody battles of the Isonzo Front (1915–1917) have been preserved under the open sky. The park is linked by trails to several open-air battlefield museums — a unique living memorial to the tragedy of the Great War.
๐๏ธ Roman Baths (Terme Romane di Monfalcone) — the remains of an ancient Roman thermal complex, preserved within a modern spa facility reopened after restoration in 2014. A remarkable blend of antiquity and contemporary wellness.
โช Cathedral of Sant'Ambrogio (Duomo di Sant'Ambrogio) — the city's main church, built in the twentieth century on the site of an earlier place of worship; it houses significant works of art and serves as the spiritual heart of Monfalcone.
๐ Marina Julia — a seaside resort on the coast near Monfalcone, with clean sandy beaches and excellent facilities for active pursuits: kitesurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing.
๐ฐ Miramare Castle (Castello di Miramare) — 15 km away on the outskirts of Trieste stands one of the Adriatic's most romantic castles. Built in 1856–1860 for Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, it overhangs the sea from a steep rocky promontory and is surrounded by magnificent gardens. An absolute must-visit.
๐๏ธ Trieste — 21 km from Monfalcone lies one of the Adriatic's most fascinating cities: the former Austro-Hungarian capital on the Adriatic, the city of James Joyce and coffee traditions, with the magnificent Piazza Unità d'Italia, a Roman theatre and a unique blend of Mediterranean and Central European architecture.
๐ฟ Karst Plateau (Carso / Kras) — immediately beyond the city begins the extraordinary karst landscape, home to the Grotta Gigante — one of the world's largest caves (near the village of Sgonico) — where guided tours explore an underground chamber rising over 100 metres in height.
โจ Why choose a cruise from Monfalcone
Monfalcone is an unconventional yet exceptionally convenient homeport for those who value authenticity and logistical ease.
First, the transport connections are outstanding: Trieste Airport (TRS) is just 5 km from the cruise terminal — less than 10 minutes by taxi. โ๏ธ Monfalcone railway station sits at the junction of the Venice–Trieste and Udine–Trieste lines, providing seamless connections in both directions.
Second, the geographic position is unique: itineraries from Monfalcone cover the finest ports of the Eastern Mediterranean — Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and Israel — in convenient seven-day programmes. ๐
Third, here you can witness something found at no other port: the very ships on which you will cruise are born in Monfalcone — and the MuCa museum offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of this extraordinary process. ๐ญ

๐ก Expert Tips from Four Gates Group
Over the years of working with Monfalcone and the Friuli region, our cruise specialists have gathered a set of practical tips:
๐ซ Arrive the day before your cruise. Whether you fly through Trieste, Venice or Treviso, even a short flight delay can jeopardise your boarding. The Friuli Venezia Giulia region is well worth an extra day — Trieste, Miramare Castle or the Grado coastline make a wonderful start to your journey.
๐ผ Book your transfer in advance. Especially if you are flying into Venice and travelling on to Monfalcone — a pre-booked transfer guarantees a fixed price and a driver who will be waiting for you.
๐ถ Carry cash. For small taxis and regional bus ticket machines, cash remains the most reliable option. Keep 20–30 EUR in small denominations.
๐ Leave your luggage at the hotel until boarding time. If you arrive in the morning and boarding is in the afternoon, most hotels in the region will store your suitcases free of charge, even after check-out.
๐ Remember to validate your train ticket. Regional Trenitalia tickets must be stamped in the platform validator before boarding — without this they are considered invalid and you risk a fine.
๐ฑ Download apps in advance: Trenitalia (timetables and tickets), Google Maps with an offline map of the region, Google Translate with the Italian language pack — not all signs in the smaller port area are available in English.
๐จ Choose a hotel near Monfalcone station or in Trieste. From Monfalcone, the terminal is just 10–15 minutes on foot or by taxi, while Trieste is only 25 minutes away by train and — with its extraordinary beauty — makes a wonderful bonus stop before you set sail.
๐ Take the chance to see Venice. If you are flying through Marco Polo or Treviso airport, spending a day in Venice before transferring to Monfalcone is entirely possible — the two cities are only 1.5 hours apart by train.

Sights & Attractions of Monfalcone: A Complete Guide for Cruise Passengers
Monfalcone is a port city on the northern Adriatic coast in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where a medieval fortress stands side by side with the largest shipyard in Europe. The city holds 2,000 years of uninterrupted history: from Roman villas and thermal baths to Austro-Hungarian fortifications and the trenches of the First World War. But what matters most for a cruise traveller is its ideal location — 21 km from Trieste, 20 km from the enchanting island resort of Grado, and just over an hour by train to Venice. For a passenger with 8–12 hours ashore, no other Adriatic port offers a richer variety of day-trip options. ๐ฏ
๐ฐ 1. Rocca di Monfalcone — The Medieval Fortress
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
The Rocca is an ancient fortress that has dominated the city from its rocky hilltop since time immemorial, and is the very symbol of Monfalcone. From its walls you enjoy an unbeatable panorama of the Gulf of Trieste, and on clear days the silhouette of the Slovenian coast emerges on the horizon. ๐
๐น The fortress was built in the 12th century as a defensive outpost of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, then reinforced by the Venetians in the 16th century — which is why its fortification style blends Gothic and Renaissance elements.
๐น Scholars believe that an earlier fortification may have existed here as far back as the reign of Theodoric the Great, the Ostrogoth king of the 5th century, although no conclusive evidence remains.
๐น In 1420 the fortress passed to the Republic of Venice, becoming a key bulwark against Austrian advances and Turkish raids.
๐น In 1797 the castle was seized by the Austrian Empire, and on 9 June 1915, as Italy entered the First World War, the Italian flag was raised here.
๐น Today the tower and courtyard house the Palaeontology Museum: fossils found in the karst deposits directly beneath the hill date back 85 million years — marine molluscs, fish bones and remains of prehistoric mammals.
๐ History:
The fortress passed through the hands of dozens of rulers. Patriarchs of Aquileia, Counts of Gorizia, Austrian Dukes, the Venetian Republic — each fortified and rebuilt the Rocca to suit their own needs. During World War I the front line ran literally on the other side of the hill: Monfalcone changed hands several times, and the fortress served as an observation post and command centre.
After 1918 the city became permanently part of Italy. In the second half of the 20th century the Rocca was restored, and today it is one of the most visited landmarks in the region. A footpath from the town centre leads up to it — the climb takes about 15 minutes. ๐ฟ
๐ข How to Get There from the Marina Hannibal Cruise Terminal:
• On foot: 20–25 minutes from the terminal to the foot of the hill, plus 15 minutes on the trail. The most budget-friendly option
• Taxi: 5–8 minutes, approx. EUR 8–12 to the base of the hill. Address: Salita alla Rocca, Monfalcone
• City bus: lines 1 and 2 stop in the town centre, 10 minutes' walk from there
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
• Fortress grounds: free entry
• Palaeontology Museum: approx. EUR 3–5, confirm on site
• Opening hours: daily 9:00–19:00 (until 20:00 in summer), in winter 9:00–17:00
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: The Palaeontology Museum has occasionally been closed for restoration. Before your visit, check the schedule on the Monfalcone tourist office website or by phone.
๐ก Tip: Climb the tower before sunset — the panorama of the Gulf of Trieste from the fortress walls is one of the most spectacular in the region.
โ๏ธ 2. Great War Thematic Park (Parco Tematico della Grande Guerra)
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
Monfalcone and its surroundings were one of the most important theatres of operations in the First World War. The Isonzo front line ran right through here — Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies fought eleven battles along the Isonzo River between 1915 and 1917, together losing more than 300,000 men.
๐น In 2005 an open-air thematic park opened on the karst plateau slopes, offering three trails of varying difficulty along original trenches and underground shelters from the war. ๐ช
๐น Information panels with archival photographs, maps and event descriptions are placed throughout — the park is effectively an outdoor museum.
๐น The karst rocks still reveal tunnels and combat positions carved by hand into hard limestone.
๐น The renowned Austrian architect Max Fabiani — who later redesigned parts of Vienna — helped design the defensive positions on these very slopes.
๐น The park combines the memory of the Great War with a unique natural karst landscape home to rare plants and birds. ๐ฆ
๐ History:
In May 1915 the Kingdom of Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary and immediately attacked along the Isonzo River. The karst plateau above Monfalcone became hell on earth: soldiers on both sides had to chisel shelters directly into rock, since no earthen trenches could be dug. It was here that the future Nobel Prize–winning Austrian poet and officer Ernst Trakl fought and was wounded.
Monfalcone changed hands several times. Only after the Battle of Caporetto (Kobarid) in October 1917 did the Austrians push the front far to the west. After the war the city joined Italy, and initial efforts to preserve the battlefield positions began. The park today is one of the finest Great War memorial sites in Italy.
๐ข How to Get There from the Marina Hannibal Cruise Terminal:
• Taxi: 10–15 minutes, approx. EUR 12–18. The park entrance is on the karst plateau above the city (Monte Sei Busi, Ronchi dei Legionari area)
• On foot + climb: about 40–50 minutes from the Monfalcone town centre; suitable for fit walkers only. Footwear — hiking boots only
• Bus: APT Gorizia regional services stop nearby, journey time 20–25 minutes
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
• Park entry: free
• Three trails: short (1.5 h), medium (3 h), long (4+ h) — all walking
• Park open: 24/7, trails accessible year-round
โ ๏ธ CAUTION: Some sections require physical fitness — there are steep climbs and uneven rocky terrain. Children under 8 and visitors with joint problems are advised to take only the short trail.
๐ Essential: sturdy closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles, water, sunscreen in summer.
โ 3. Shipbuilding Museum (Museo della Cantieristica)
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
Monfalcone is the birthplace of the world's largest cruise ships. Right here, at the Fincantieri shipyards, hundreds of vessels were built that have carried millions of tourists across every ocean, including liners such as Costa Smeralda, Norwegian Bliss and many ships of the Costa Cruises fleet.
๐น The museum traces more than 100 years of Monfalcone's shipbuilding tradition — from the first transatlantic liners of the 1920s to today's giants exceeding 300 metres in length.
๐น The displays include large-scale ship models, archival photographs, rare tools and documents that recreate the atmosphere of a working 20th-century port.
๐น The Fincantieri Monfalcone yard is the largest by area (787,000 m²) of all the company's sites and can build three large vessels simultaneously.
๐น From 1907 to the present day more than 500 ships have been launched here, including World War I submarines, aircraft carriers and modern mega-liners.
๐น The yard's first famous transatlantic liner — SS Saturnia (1927) — carried up to 1,775 passengers and was considered a symbol of luxury in its era. ๐ณ๏ธ
๐ History:
The yard was founded by the Cosulich family in 1907 as the "Cantiere Navale di Monfalcone". During World War I it built mainly submarines. Between the wars came the golden age: the transatlantic liners Saturnia and Vulcania astonished all of Europe. After World War II, which heavily damaged the yard, it was gradually rebuilt, and by the 1960s it was again leading in passenger ship construction. In 1984 the state-owned Fincantieri company absorbed the yard and focused it exclusively on cruise liners.
The museum opened in the restored building of former workers' workshops next to the port and stands as a living monument to the city's industrial heritage.

๐ฏ 4. Duino Castle & the Rilke Trail (Castello di Duino & Sentiero Rilke)
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
Duino Castle perches on a sheer cliff above the Adriatic 15 km from Monfalcone, offering one of the most dramatic coastal views on the Gulf of Trieste. It was here in 1912 that the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote the opening lines of his masterpiece, the Duino Elegies. Legend has it that inspiration struck as he stood on the wind-swept cliff edge, listening to voices rising from the abyss. ๐
๐น The present castle dates from the 14th–16th centuries. Next to it stand the ruins of the even older "Old Castle", which tumbled into the sea after a cliff collapse.
๐น The castle remains a private residence of the family of Prince Carlo Alessandro della Torre e Tasso, and is open to visitors only at set times.
๐น The Rilke Trail (Sentiero Rilke) is a 2-kilometre footpath along the karst coast between Duino and Sistiana. It runs along the very edge of the cliff above a turquoise sea — one of the most scenic coastal walks on the Adriatic. ๐
๐น Rare karst plants grow along the trail: sedge, wild sage, cistus. In spring more than 50 species of wildflowers bloom here.
๐น The castle has appeared in several Hollywood films and TV series thanks to its unique setting. ๐ฌ
๐ History:
The first fortifications on this cliff were built by the Lombards in the 6th century. In the 14th century the castle passed to the Valsecchi family and later to the Thurn und Taxis dynasty, which retains ownership to this day. In 1511 it was sacked by peasant rebels. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it became an elegant aristocratic salon: Stendhal, Mark Twain and Emperor Franz Josef I were among its guests, as were Rilke and James Joyce, who finished Ulysses in nearby Trieste.
๐ข How to Get There from the Marina Hannibal Cruise Terminal:
• Taxi: 20–25 minutes, approx. EUR 20–28. Address: Frazione Duino, 34011 Duino-Aurisina (TS)
• APT bus: line 51 from the centre of Monfalcone to Duino, 20 minutes, ticket EUR 1.50–2
• Regional train: to Duino station; from the terminal take a taxi to Monfalcone station (EUR 8), then 8 min by train
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
• Duino Castle (guided interior tour): EUR 12 (adults), EUR 7 (children 6–16), free under 6
• Castle opening hours: April–October, Tue–Sun 9:30–17:30; November–March — weekends and public holidays only
• Rilke Trail: free entry, open 24/7
• Park circuit around the castle: EUR 3
โ ๏ธ Tip: Even without the interior tour, the view of the castle from the start of the Rilke Trail and the sea panorama are well worth the trip. The combination of castle + trail + a coffee in Sistiana is an ideal half-day programme.
๐๏ธ 5. Trieste: Miramare Castle & Piazza Unità d'Italia
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
Trieste is the nearest major city to Monfalcone (21 km, 25 minutes by car or train) and a genuine treasure for any cruise visitor. The city served as the principal port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for centuries and retains a uniquely Central European character: grand palaces, elegant cafés and a romantic seafront promenade. ๐
๐น Miramare Castle (Castello di Miramare, 1856–1860) stands on a rocky promontory above the sea, 8 km from the city centre — one of the most beautiful castles on the Adriatic. It was built by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg for himself and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium.
๐น The castle is surrounded by a 22-hectare park filled with exotic plants the Archduke brought back from around the world on his voyages. The park is free. ๐ฟ
๐น The castle carries a dark legend: everyone who spent the night here met a tragic end. Maximilian was executed in Mexico (1867), and Duke Amedeo of Aosta, who lived here in the 1930s, also died in tragic circumstances.
๐น Piazza Unità d'Italia is the largest sea-facing square in Italy. It is enclosed on three sides by magnificent early 20th-century palaces and opens on the fourth side directly onto the Adriatic. ๐
๐น Trieste is the coffee capital of Italy: it has its own "Triestine" coffee vocabulary (capucin, capo, nero…), and the headquarters of the Illy brand are right here. โ
๐น A statue of James Joyce stands on the waterfront; he lived in Trieste for over ten years and wrote much of Ulysses here.
๐ History:
Trieste is an ancient city, first settled by Celts and then Romanised as Tergeste. Its golden age came in the 18th and 19th centuries when Empress Maria Theresa granted it free-port status and made it the largest trading hub in Central Europe. The legacy of that mercantile era — the Cathedral of San Giusto on the hill, the Grand Canal, neoclassical palaces and coffee houses — has survived to the present day.
In 1918 the city passed to Italy; after the Second World War it briefly existed as the Free Territory of Trieste under Allied administration, and only in 1954 did it permanently become part of Italy. That layered heritage — Austrian, Slavic, Jewish, Greek — is still felt in the city's architecture and character.
๐ข How to Get There from the Marina Hannibal Cruise Terminal:
• Taxi to Trieste: 25–30 minutes, approx. EUR 30–40
• Regional train: taxi or bus to Monfalcone station (5–10 min) → train to Trieste Centrale (20–25 min, EUR 4–6); from the station to Miramare — bus no. 6 (20 min, EUR 1.50) or taxi (EUR 10–12)
• Private transfer: the most comfortable option — your driver waits and brings you back to the terminal at an agreed time
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
• Miramare Castle (museum): EUR 15 (full price), EUR 2 (EU citizens 18–25), free under 18. First Sunday of every month — free entry for all
• Miramare Park: free, open daily 8:00–16:00 (until 19:00 in summer)
• Castle opening hours: Mon–Sun 9:00–19:00 (confirm on the official website)
• Piazza Unità d'Italia: free, always open
• Cathedral of San Giusto: free, 8:30–19:00
โ ๏ธ Tip: Combine the castle and park with a stroll through central Trieste and lunch in a Belle Époque café — for example, the famous Caffè degli Specchi on Piazza Unità d'Italia.
๐ฆ 6. Grotta Gigante — The Giant Cave
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
Just 30 minutes from Monfalcone (by bus from Trieste) lies one of the most breathtaking natural wonders on the Adriatic. Grotta Gigante holds a Guinness World Record as the tourist cave with the world's largest natural hall. ๐
๐น The main chamber, the "Grande Caverna", reaches 98.5 m in height, 167.6 m in length and 76.3 m in width — St Peter's Basilica in Rome, dome and all, would fit inside.
๐น The visitor route descends to a depth of 100 metres underground, requiring visitors to climb 1,000 steps — 500 down and 500 back up.
๐น The temperature inside is a constant +11 °C year-round — whether it is 35 °C outside or freezing cold.
๐น The cave's tallest stalagmite stands 12 metres high. The dripping that formed it began during the Ice Age.
๐น The cave was first explored in 1840, opened to the public in 1908, and only received electricity in 1957 — all prior visits were made by torchlight and candlelight. ๐ฏ๏ธ
๐น The cave houses precision pendulums used to measure Earth tides — the microscopic deformations of the Earth's crust caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun.
๐ History:
The karst plateau above Trieste is a geological phenomenon: limestone dissolved by underground water over millions of years, creating a labyrinth of cavities. The cave is located in the village of Sgonico, on the border between Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The first person to descend into it was Austrian explorer Anton Freyer in 1840, who nearly perished — the entrance at that time was a vertical shaft 95 metres deep. Today safe access is provided by railings and walkways built along natural rock ledges.
๐ข How to Get There from the Marina Hannibal Cruise Terminal:
• Taxi (easiest option): 30–35 minutes, approx. EUR 35–45. Address: Borgo Grotta Gigante 42/a, Sgonico (Trieste)
• Train + bus: to Trieste Centrale (20–25 min) → bus no. 42 from Piazza Oberdan to Borgo Grotta Gigante (35 min). Total approx. 1.5 h, EUR 7–9

๐งฅ Clothing: Inside it is +11 °C and damp — even in summer a light jacket and closed, non-slip shoes are mandatory.
๐ถ 7. Grado — Island Resort & Aquileia
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
Grado is a lagoon island town 20 km from Monfalcone, known as the "Golden Island" (Isola d'Oro) of the Adriatic. It offers a rare combination: some of the finest sandy beaches of the Upper Adriatic together with a medieval old town filled with Early Christian basilicas dating to the 5th–6th centuries. ๐๏ธ
๐น The Basilica of Sant'Eufemia (5th c.) with its magnificent mosaic floor and the adjoining Baptistery are among the best-preserved Early Christian buildings in Europe.
๐น Grado's beaches regularly receive the EU Blue Flag award for water cleanliness and beach quality. The sand is fine and soft. ๐ฉ
๐น In the Grado lagoon you can hire a kayak or motorboat to reach secluded islets and traditional fishing villages.
๐น Nearby lies ancient Aquileia, which in the Roman Empire was the fourth-largest city in the west and is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It preserves the largest early medieval mosaic floors in the Alpine-Adriatic region.
๐น Aquileia is sometimes called the "Second Pompeii" — Roman ruins are extraordinarily well preserved here.
๐ History:
Grado was founded in the 5th century by the inhabitants of Aquileia fleeing the Huns of Attila. The island served as a temporary refuge but gradually grew into an independent town with its own patriarchate. Throughout the Middle Ages Grado and Aquileia competed for religious supremacy on the Adriatic. Aquileia is even older: founded in 181 BC as a Roman colony, it quickly became the most important trading hub between the Italian Peninsula and Central Europe. After Attila's sack in AD 452 the city declined, but its legacy lies preserved underground — and is being slowly unearthed.
๐ข How to Get There from the Marina Hannibal Cruise Terminal:
• Taxi to Grado: 25–30 minutes, approx. EUR 25–35
• APT bus: from Monfalcone town centre to Grado, ~30 minutes, ticket EUR 2–3, services every 30–60 minutes
