Cruises from Koper
Koper — Slovenia's only maritime gateway and the oldest town on the Slovenian coast. It is a cosy gem of the northern Adriatic that increasingly appears on the itineraries of major cruise lines. Set on the narrow 47-kilometre strip of Slovenian coastline between Italy and Croatia, Koper enchants travellers with the Venetian charm of its old town, its Mediterranean climate and its remarkable proximity to Slovenia's natural wonders. Here 15th-century Gothic palaces gaze upon the country's largest container terminal, while the fairy-tale capital of Ljubljana and the world-famous Postojna Cave are each just an hour's drive away.
For the cruise traveller, Koper is above all a convenient port of call on northern Adriatic itineraries, attractive as a calmer and more authentic alternative to overcrowded Venice. In 2024 around 125,000 cruise passengers passed through the Koper passenger terminal, and the 2025 season set a record for the number of calls — 80 ships, the highest figure in the port's history. With these numbers, Koper confidently holds the status of Slovenia's main cruise gateway and one of the new gems of Adriatic itineraries. ๐ข
๐ Before setting off on a cruise from Koper or stepping ashore for a few hours' call, here are the key things to know:
๐ธ๐ฎ Country: Slovenia
๐ Region: Slovenian Istria (Coastal-Karst statistical region)
๐ฅ Population: around 25,000 in the town itself (over 50,000 including the surrounding area)
๐ Area: 13.0 km²
๐ฃ๏ธ Languages: Slovenian (official); Italian also holds official status in the historic centre; English is spoken in the tourist zone
๐ถ Currency: euro (€)
๐ Time zone: CET (UTC+1), in summer CEST (UTC+2) — one hour behind Kyiv
โ๏ธ Climate: Mediterranean, with mild winters (+5…+10 °C) and warm summers (+25…+30 °C)
โ๏ธ Nearest airports: Trieste – Friuli Venezia Giulia (TRS, Italy) — ~45 km away; Ljubljana Joลพe Puฤnik (LJU) — ~110 km away
โ Official name of the cruise port: Port of Koper (Luka Koper)
๐บ๏ธ Port area: around 280 hectares — the country's only commercial seaport
๐๏ธ The history of Koper — from Roman Capris to Slovenia's cruise gateway
โณ The island of goats that became a town
The history of Koper began on a small rocky islet just off the shore, which in ancient times was inhabited mainly by wild goats. This is the very origin of the town's Italian name — Capodistria (from the Italian capra, meaning «goat»). In Roman times the settlement bore the names Aegida and Capris, and later received the Latin name Caput Histriae — «head of Istria» — from which the modern Italian name Capodistria was derived.
Its island location shaped the town's destiny for centuries: protected from land-based attacks by the sea, it grew into a safe harbour and an important trading centre of the northern Adriatic. The island was only connected to the mainland by a causeway in the 19th century, and today the old town has merged with the shore, yet its compact, tangled medieval layout still betrays its island past.
โ๏ธ Four centuries under the wing of the winged lion
From 1278 (according to other sources, 1279) until 1797, Koper belonged to the Venetian Republic and served as the capital of Venetian Istria. This was the town's golden age: it was then that its present appearance took shape — narrow lanes, Gothic-Renaissance palaces and a main square framed by its most important buildings. The fall of Venice under Napoleon in 1797 brought this era to an end, after which the town passed to Austria (1813–1918) and then to Italy.
The 20th century brought Koper dramatic changes. After the Second World War the town was for a time part of the Free Territory of Trieste, and in 1954 it finally became part of Yugoslavia — and from then on the rapid development of the modern port began. Today Koper shows the world two faces: a bustling industrial giant with the country's only cargo port — and a charming old town imbued with the Venetian spirit, which draws ever more travellers year after year. ๐ฅ
โ The Port of Koper — Slovenia's only maritime gateway
๐ The scale and structure of the port
The modern Port of Koper (Luka Koper) is more than just cruise berths. It is Slovenia's only commercial seaport and one of the most important cargo hubs of the northern Adriatic, connecting the markets of Central and South-Eastern Europe with the Mediterranean and the Far East. The port covers around 280 hectares, with 30 berths and two piers, and the maximum depth of its waters reaches 18 metres. In 2024 the port handled around 23 million tonnes of cargo, and in 2025 it set a new container-throughput record — more than 1.27 million container units (TEU).
For the cruise traveller, the key facility is the passenger terminal, located right next to the old town. This is one of Koper's great advantages: the heart of the historic centre, with its Tito Square, cathedral and palaces, is just a few minutes' walk away, with no need for transfers. ๐ถ
๐ข The new passenger terminal
On 27 May 2025, Koper ceremonially opened a new, modern passenger terminal — an event that coincided with the 20th anniversary of the first cruise ship's arrival in the port. The investment amounted to around EUR 3.3 million. The building was designed to be energy-efficient and environmentally friendly: it is built from recyclable materials and blends harmoniously into the urban surroundings. โจ Inside there is a tourist information centre, a conference room and a café with a terrace on the first floor, open to all visitors; facilities for customs and police services are also provided. On days without ship calls, part of the terminal serves as a public space and a venue for local community events.
๐ข Which cruise lines operate from Koper
Koper welcomes ships from many of the world's leading cruise brands: MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Viking Cruises, Azamara, Marella Cruises, AIDA Cruises, Windstar Cruises and others. Thanks to its compact historic centre and the wealth of natural and cultural attractions nearby, Koper has become an appealing alternative to overcrowded Venice on northern Adriatic itineraries. ๐
๐ก Interesting facts about Koper and its port
Getting to know the town will be richer if you keep a few less-than-obvious details in mind:
๐ The town is named after goats. The Italian name Capodistria comes from the word capra — «goat»: the rocky island on which the town grew was once inhabited mainly by these animals.
๐๏ธ The old town stands on a former island. Until the 19th century the historic centre of Koper was an island separated from the mainland by the sea, and only later was it joined to the land by a causeway.
โ It is Slovenia's only seaport. The country's entire coastline measures just about 47 kilometres, so Koper carries the whole of the nation's maritime cargo traffic.
๐จ The cathedral of Koper holds works by Vittore Carpaccio. Inside the cathedral you can see the painting «Sacra Conversazione» by the great Venetian master, as well as one of Slovenia's largest organs — with more than 5,500 pipes.
๐ The bell tower has more than 200 steps. To climb the cathedral's 54-metre campanile and take in the town, the bay and the port, you need to conquer around 204 steps.
๐ฆ The mark of Venice on the façades. On the corner of the Praetorian Palace, the «lion's mouth» (bocca del leone) survives — a stone opening into which townsfolk once dropped anonymous messages to the city authorities.
๐ Koper is a young university town. Despite its venerable age, since 2003 it has been home to the University of Primorska, which lends the ancient town a youthful energy.
๐ The famous Lipizzaner horses were born nearby. An hour's drive from the port lies the Lipica Stud Farm, founded back in 1580 — the cradle of the snow-white Lipizzaners and one of the oldest riding schools in the world.
๐ Koper's main sights — a must-see list for cruise travellers
A cruise ship's call at Koper usually lasts from 8 to 10 hours, so it is important to decide in advance whether to devote the day to the town itself or to head off on an excursion into the heart of Slovenia. You will find a detailed list with photos, addresses and opening hours in the «Sights and Places of Interest» section, while below is a short overview of the landmark spots that shape the face of the town and its surroundings.
๐๏ธ Tito Square (Titov trg) — the historic heart of Koper and one of the most harmonious squares of the former Venetian Republic. Closed to traffic, it is surrounded by the town's most important buildings and serves as the main landmark for a stroll through the old town.
๐ฐ The Praetorian Palace (Pretorska palaฤa) — a magnificent 15th-century palace in the Venetian Gothic style, the chief architectural symbol of Koper. Today it houses the town administration, the tourist information centre and a wedding hall; its façade is adorned with an external staircase, a balcony, a statue of Justice and dozens of coats of arms.
โช The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — one of the town's oldest churches, combining Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Inside are paintings by Vittore Carpaccio and a huge symphonic organ, while the adjacent 54-metre bell tower offers a splendid panorama.
๐๏ธ The Loggia (Loggia) — an elegant Venetian Gothic structure opposite the Praetorian Palace, where civic debates were once held. Today a café and a gallery occupy the space beneath its arches.
๐ Carpaccio Square and Carpaccio House (Carpacciov trg) — a cosy corner near the old port with the Column of St Justin and a Venetian well; a small but eloquent window into the town's maritime past.
๐๏ธ Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle — one of the world's most famous karst caves, an hour's drive from Koper, where an electric train carries visitors deep into the underground halls, and the only castle in Europe built into a cliff; the most popular shore excursion.
๐ The Lipica Stud Farm — the cradle of the snow-white Lipizzaner horses, founded in 1580; one of the oldest riding schools in the world, located near the Italian border.
๐๏ธ Piran — a charming seaside town on a picturesque peninsula half an hour away, with Venetian architecture, narrow lanes and Tartini Square; ideal for a shorter excursion along the coast.
๐๏ธ Ljubljana — the cosy capital of Slovenia about 1.5 hours away, with its Dragon Bridge, Triple Bridge, hilltop castle and lively riverside promenade; a popular destination for passengers with a longer call.
โจ Why choose a cruise calling at Koper
Koper — is a rare example of a port where the large and the small combine to the traveller's advantage.
First, there is its compactness and convenience: the passenger terminal lies just a few minutes' walk from the old town, so you can see the main sights even without a transfer. ๐ถ
Second, there is the astonishing variety packed into a small distance: from Koper you can reach Alpine landscapes, karst caves, the Slovenian capital and the Venetian towns of the coast within an hour or two's drive. ๐
Third, there is its authenticity: unlike the overcrowded Adriatic ports, Koper preserves an unhurried Mediterranean rhythm, Venetian charm and genuine hospitality — the perfect place to feel the real Slovenia in a single day's call. ๐ท

How to Get to the Cruise Terminal in Koper
Koper — a cosy port town on Slovenia's Adriatic coast, and the journey to its cruise terminal is arguably the most convenient in the entire Mediterranean. Unlike the vast ports of Barcelona or Civitavecchia, here liners dock literally 200 metres from the historic centre, and the passenger terminal is connected to the old town by a free elevator. At the same time, Koper itself has no international airport, so most travellers arrive via the neighbouring cities of Trieste, Venice or Ljubljana — and these very routes have their own nuances. Below is a verified step-by-step guide with all transfer options, current prices and tips from the cruise specialists at Four Gates Group. ๐ฏ
๐ Where exactly the Koper cruise port is located
The Port of Koper (Luka Koper) is Slovenia's only commercial seaport, comprising twelve specialised terminals. Cruise ships are served by just one of them — the Passenger Terminal (Potniški terminal), located separately from the cargo berths, right next to the old town:
โ Koper Passenger Terminal — the city's only cruise berth:
• New 2025 terminal — the modern building was ceremonially opened on 27 May 2025, marking the 20th anniversary of the first cruise liner's arrival in Koper. It is an energy-efficient facility with a tourist information centre, a conference room, and a café with a terrace on the first floor, open to all visitors
• One liner at a time — the berth accommodates one cruise ship at a time, up to 350 metres long, with a maximum depth alongside of around 10 metres
• Free elevator to the centre — a futuristic panoramic elevator across the road from the terminal takes passengers straight up to the old town
๐ GPS address: Potniški terminal, Ukmarjev trg, 6000 Koper, Slovenia
๐ถ Distance to the city centre: about 200 metres to Tito Square (Titov trg), a 5-minute walk to the cathedral
๐ Port coordinates: 45°33′ N, 13°44′ E
โ Important: Koper has only one cruise berth, so there is none of the terminal confusion found in larger ports. The exact docking and boarding times are always stated in your cruise voucher — check it 48–72 hours before departure, as the call schedule is sometimes adjusted due to weather conditions or changes to the port's timetable.
โ๏ธ From the airports near Koper to the cruise terminal
Koper itself has no international airport of its own, so travellers arrive via one of four neighbouring air hubs. The closest and most convenient is Trieste Airport in Italy, while the widest choice of flights is in Venice. The route from Ukraine usually runs via Warsaw, Vienna, Istanbul or Frankfurt with a connection.
๐ฌ Trieste Airport (TRS) — the closest option
The Italian airport Trieste-Friuli Venezia Giulia (TRS) is located about 55–65 km from Koper. This is the most convenient air hub for a cruise from Koper.
• Travel time by car: about 50–60 minutes
• Private transfer: from €65 for a sedan, the driver will meet you in the arrivals hall — the most comfortable option
• Public transport: there is no direct bus; a route with a transfer in Trieste takes about 2–2.5 hours
๐ก Tip from Four Gates: despite crossing the Italy–Slovenia border, the road is smooth and scenic, and there is no passport control within the Schengen Area.
๐ฌ Ljubljana Airport (LJU) — Slovenia's capital option
The airport Ljubljana Joลพe Puฤnik (LJU) is located about 110–120 km from Koper.
• Travel time by car: about 1 hour 20 minutes – 1 hour 30 minutes
• Private transfer: from €120–150 for a sedan
• Advantage: convenient if you plan to explore Ljubljana or Lake Bled before your cruise
๐ฌ Venice airports (VCE / TSF) — the widest choice of flights
The Venice airports Marco Polo (VCE) and Treviso (TSF) are located about 160–175 km from Koper. This is where you'll find the widest choice of international and low-cost flights.
• Travel time by car: about 2 hours – 2 hours 30 minutes
• Private transfer: from €180–220 for a sedan
• GoOpti shuttle: a shared minibus «door to door», a budget option with advance booking
๐ค Four Gates Group arranges private transfers from any of these airports — simply provide your flight number when booking the cruise, and the driver will meet you with a sign at the exit.
๐ To Koper by train and bus
Koper has a railway station and a bus station located next to each other, about 1 km south of the historic centre (around a 15-minute walk from the port).
๐ By train: Koper is connected to the Slovenian railway network; direct and connecting trains run from Ljubljana. From Trieste (Italy) it is more convenient to travel by bus, as there is no direct rail link.
๐ By bus: FlixBus and local carriers connect Koper with Trieste, Ljubljana and the coastal towns (Izola, Piran, Portoroลพ). Local coastal buses depart from the central bus station.
๐ถ From the station to the port: about 1.2 km, a 15-minute walk over flat terrain, or a short taxi ride for €6–10.
๐ก Tip: on weekends the coastal bus timetable is reduced, so allow extra time for your journey.
๐๏ธ From Koper's centre to the cruise terminal
This is the most pleasant part: only a few minutes separate Koper's historic centre from the cruise berth. If you spent the night at a local hotel, reaching the liner takes just a few minutes:
๐ถ On foot — the main and most convenient option:
• Distance: about 200 metres from Tito Square to the terminal
• Time: 5 minutes at a leisurely pace
• Route: flat, along the cobblestones of the old town, leading out to the seafront
• Free elevator: a futuristic panoramic elevator connects the upper part of the town with the passenger terminal — ideal for passengers with luggage or limited mobility
๐ Taxi from the hotel — for those with heavy suitcases:
• Cost: €6–10 within the city
• Time: 5–10 minutes
• Apps: Uber and local taxi services operate in Koper
๐ Free tourist train — a pleasant seasonal bonus:
• On weekends during the cruise season, a small tourist train runs free of charge around the perimeter of the old town every half hour, straight from the cruise berth
• Especially convenient for passengers with mild mobility issues
๐๏ธ To the shopping centres: the modern Planet Koper shopping mall is located outside the old town — about a 5-minute taxi ride away.
๐ By your own car — car parks near the port
If you arrive in Koper by your own or a rented car, the town has several convenient car parks within walking distance of the terminal:
๐
ฟ๏ธ Car parks in the centre of Koper — the closest to the cruise berth:
• Location: several municipal car parks and on-street zones along the seafront and near the old town
• Cost: approximately €1–2 per hour during the day, with daily and long-term rates available
• Features: the historic centre is largely pedestrian, so car access there is restricted
๐ก Tip: for long-term parking during your cruise, it is best to check the available sites and rates in advance, as spaces near the seafront can be scarce on peak days.
๐ฃ๏ธ GPS route: coming from Ljubljana or Trieste, it is most convenient to take the A1 / H5 motorway, which leads directly to Koper and the coast.
๐ Popular excursions from the Port of Koper
One of Koper's main advantages is its location — from here, within a few hours, you can reach the most beautiful corners of Slovenia and neighbouring countries. The most popular destinations among cruise tourists:
๐๏ธ Piran and Portoroลพ: the most beautiful town on the Slovenian coast, with Venetian architecture and Tartini Square — about 20–30 minutes' drive
๐ฐ Ljubljana: the charming capital of Slovenia with its castle and riverside embankments — about 1 hour 20 minutes
๐๏ธ Lake Bled: an Alpine gem with an island and a church — one of Slovenia's signature sights
๐ณ๏ธ Postojna Cave: one of the largest karst cave complexes in Europe
๐ฎ๐น Trieste (Italy): an elegant city with Austro-Hungarian architecture and Miramare Castle — about 30–40 minutes
๐ Hop-On Hop-Off: a tourist bus connecting Koper, Izola, Piran and Portoroลพ, with the option to disembark in each town.
โฟ Accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility
Koper's new passenger terminal has been designed with the needs of all travellers in mind:
โ
The modern terminal building is equipped in line with international port safety standards
โ
The free panoramic elevator connects the terminal with the old town — convenient for wheelchairs and passengers with reduced mobility
โ
The free tourist train on weekends is adapted for passengers with mild mobility issues
โ
Short distances within the historic centre — everything is within walking distance
โ
Terminal staff speak English and help with orientation
โ
Inform the cruise line in advance about any specialised transport needs
โฐ When to arrive at the cruise terminal
Since in most cases Koper is a port of call (rather than departure) during Adriatic cruises, the time to return on board is clearly stated in your programme. For cruises starting from Koper, the general rules apply:
๐ Check-in desks: usually open 3–4 hours before the liner's departure
๐ MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises: 3–3.5 hours before departure
๐ Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity: at the assigned check-in time (usually 30-minute windows)
โ Boarding deadline: usually 60–90 minutes before departure — being late means you will only see the liner from the shore. All Four Gates Group vouchers include the exact boarding time for your specific cruise.
๐ก Insider tips from the experts at Four Gates Group
Over years of working with Adriatic cruises, our specialists have gathered a set of tips that will save you time, money and nerves specifically in Koper:
๐
Fly in a day before the cruise. Since there are no direct flights to Koper, and the journey from the airport can take several hours, a time buffer is critically important — the liner does not wait. A night in Koper, Trieste or Ljubljana will take away all the stress before departure.
๐ถ Carry euros with you. Slovenia is part of the eurozone; the official currency is the euro. US dollars are not accepted for payment. ATMs are available throughout the town, including near the port, and Visa and Mastercard cards are accepted in most establishments.
๐ถ Don't order a shuttle — walk. Cruise lines sometimes offer paid shuttles to the centre, but this is an unnecessary expense: it's only a 5-minute walk to Tito Square, and the free elevator makes the climb easy even with luggage.
๐ Plan your excursions in advance. The most interesting sights — Piran, Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Postojna Cave — are located outside Koper. Without a pre-booked transfer or excursion, you may not make it back on board in time.
๐ฑ Download apps in advance: Uber or a local taxi, GoOpti (transfers), Google Maps with an offline map of Slovenia, and Google Translate with the Slovenian language pack.
๐ซ Don't plan too tight a schedule. The liner's stop in Koper usually lasts one day. It's better to choose one or two destinations and enjoy them than to spread yourself thin and miss boarding.
๐จ Choose a hotel in the old town. From there it's just a few minutes' walk to the port, and on the evening before your cruise you can stroll along the picturesque seafront and dine at one of the local restaurants.

Sights and Places of Koper: A Complete Guide for Cruise Travellers
Koper — the oldest and largest town on the Slovenian coast, where a true Venice in miniature hides behind the facades of narrow streets. Here you will find the most beautifully preserved Venetian square on the entire eastern Adriatic coast, 2,000 years of history from the Roman Capris to the modern port, and an old town so compact that you can walk it all in half a day. For a cruise-ship passenger, Koper is a real gift: the cruise terminal sits barely 300 metres from the main square, and the town itself is the perfect gateway to all of Slovenia's gems — from the Postojna Cave to Lake Bled. Below is a tried-and-tested guide to the key attractions, with up-to-date 2026 prices, opening hours, and precise instructions on how to reach each site from the cruise port. ๐ฏ
๐๏ธ 1. The Praetorian Palace (Pretorska palaฤa / Praetorian Palace)
๐ก Interesting facts and useful information:
The Praetorian Palace is the snow-white symbol of Koper and the town's most recognisable building. Its ornate facade, crowned with a Ghibelline-style crenellated parapet, looks as if it had been lifted straight from the Doge's Palace in Venice. The palace closes off the southern side of the main square and was for centuries the seat of the town's power. โจ
๐น At the top of the facade stands a stone statue of Justice with a sword — a symbol of the judicial authority once exercised within the palace walls. โ๏ธ
๐น The facade is decorated with dozens of coats of arms and heraldic emblems of the podestàs and captains who ruled the town, each leaving behind a mark in stone.
๐น On the corner of the side facade survives the famous Venetian «bocca del leone» («lion's mouth») — a stone plate with an opening into which citizens dropped anonymous messages and denunciations for the mayor. ๐ฆ
๐น The building grew out of two separate 13th-century houses joined by a loggia, and acquired its present late-Gothic-Renaissance appearance in the middle of the 15th century.
๐น Today the ground floor houses the Tourist Information Centre and an old 18th-century pharmacy, while the first floor holds a wedding hall, the mayor's office, and the town council's meeting room. ๐
๐ History:
The Praetorian Palace was built on the site of an even older town hall. Its history goes back to the 13th century, when two separate medieval stone houses were joined by a covered loggia. Over the following centuries the building was rebuilt many times, until it acquired its unified Venetian Gothic appearance in the 15th century.
During Venetian rule the palace served as the residence of the podestà and the captain — the representatives of the Venetian Republic who governed the town. The crenellated Ghibelline addition above the main facade was added in 1664. The palace survived every era of Koper — Venetian, Austrian, Italian, and Yugoslav — and miraculously endured as the town's principal secular building. The last major restoration took place in 2001, restoring the palace to its snow-white splendour.
๐ข How to get there from the cruise terminal:
• On foot: 5–10 minutes along the waterfront. The cruise terminal is around 300 metres from the main square — the most convenient option
• Free tourist train: on weekends during the cruise season, a little tourist train runs for free from the pier around the perimeter of the old town every half hour — ideal for those with limited mobility ๐
• Panoramic lift: across from the pier there is a futuristic lift that takes you straight up to the centre of the old town
๐ถ Cost and opening hours:
• Access to the main square and exterior viewing: free
• Guided tour of the palace: about 3 EUR (including the council chamber, the wedding hall, and the old pharmacy)
• Tourist Information Centre (TIC): free entry, open daily
• Old pharmacy on the ground floor: free
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: check current tour times directly at the TIC inside the palace (Titov trg 3) or on the website visitkoper.si. During Advent the palace facade becomes the stage for spectacular light animations. ๐
โช 2. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Bell Tower
๐ก Interesting facts and useful information:
The cathedral is the largest church in Slovenia and the spiritual heart of Koper. Its facade is a vivid record of two eras: the lower part is Gothic, the upper part Renaissance. Beside it rises the town bell tower, visible from every corner of the city. โช
๐น The cathedral holds a priceless altarpiece, «Madonna with Child Enthroned and Saints» by Vittore Carpaccio (1516) — the work of the celebrated Venetian master. ๐ผ๏ธ
๐น Here rests the stone sarcophagus of St Nazarius — the patron saint of Koper, from the 15th century.
๐น The bell tower holds the oldest working bell in Slovenia, cast back in 1333 by the sons of Master Giacomo of Venice. ๐
๐น The 54-metre-tall bell tower was originally a freestanding watchtower, and was only joined to the cathedral in 1488.
๐น The viewing platform at a height of 43 metres is reached by climbing 204 steps — the reward being a panorama of the whole of Koper and the Gulf of Trieste. ๐
๐ History:
The cathedral rose on the site of an ancient Roman basilica. Its history goes back to the 12th century, when the town acquired its own diocese. The church was originally Romanesque; in 1392 it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the upper part of the facade was later given a Renaissance form.
The bell tower (the City Tower) has an even older history: it served as a fortified defensive point during the Patriarchate of Aquileia and retained this role in the early Venetian period. Reconstructed between 1418 and 1480, it took on its present appearance in 1664. The large clock in the middle of the tower was installed around 1463. On its southern side the tower was once linked by an arched bridge to the palace of the vidames.
๐ข How to get there from the cruise terminal:
• On foot: 7–10 minutes to Tito Square, where the cathedral stands
• Panoramic lift or free tourist train (on weekends) — to the centre of the old town, then 2–3 minutes on foot
๐ถ Cost and opening hours:
• Entry to the cathedral: free
• Climbing the bell tower (adults): 5 EUR
• Students and seniors (65+): 4 EUR
• Children 7–18 and groups (15+): 3 EUR
• Children under 6: free
• Opening hours (2026): winter (1 October – 17 June) daily 9:00–16:30; summer (18 June – 30 September) daily 9:00–13:00 and 15:00–19:00 (last entry at 18:30)
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: bell tower tickets are sold at the TIC in the Praetorian Palace. The tower may occasionally close for maintenance — check on site. Inside the cathedral, be quiet during services and do not use flash photography.
๐ฐ 3. The Old Town and Tito Square (Titov trg)
๐ก Interesting facts and useful information:
Tito Square is the heart of Koper and one of the most beautifully preserved Venetian squares in the entire Mediterranean. There is not a single car here, only stone, history, and open-air cafes. The square is framed by a genuine ensemble of Venetian architecture. ๐๏ธ
๐น The Loggia — an elegant arcaded structure from 1463, the only Gothic town loggia in Slovenia. Today it houses a cosy cafe within walls of Venetian Gothic. โ
๐น The Armeria and the Foresteria — the former town armoury and the guesthouse for the podestà's visitors.
๐น From the square the narrow ฤevljarska ulica («Shoemakers' Street») runs south — in places no more than 2–3 metres wide, it preserves the atmosphere of a medieval trade-and-craft quarter. ๐
๐น On Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg) stands the famous Da Ponte Fountain of 1666 — built in the shape of a bridge as a replica of Venice's Rialto Bridge. Its octagonal basin is surrounded by 15 pilasters bearing the crests of Koper's noble families. โฒ
๐น The Muda Gate — the only survivor of the town's former twelve gates, built in the Renaissance style. Its coat of arms is adorned with a sun — the symbol of the town. โ๏ธ
๐ History:
Koper began as the Roman Capris on an island separated from the mainland. It was settled in antiquity, but reached its true flowering under the Venetian Republic, which ruled here for centuries. The central square, once known as Platea communis, was the town's main political and administrative centre.
In 1182 Koper received from Venice the monopoly on the salt trade in Istria — in gratitude for its «oath of allegiance» to the Doge. It was salt that made the town wealthy. The Muda Gate (Porta della Muda) was a former tollhouse, whose name comes from the old Italian word for the tax paid to enter the town. A bridge once stood before the gate, connecting the island town to the mainland, and on it a fortress known as the Lion's Castle, which the Austrian army demolished in 1820.
๐ข How to get there from the cruise terminal:
• On foot: 5–10 minutes — all the main sights of the old town are within walking distance of one another
• Free tourist train on weekends — around the perimeter of the old town
๐ถ Cost and opening hours:
• Strolling the old town and its squares: free (it is simply the historic centre)
• Loggia, Da Ponte Fountain, Muda Gate: free exterior viewing
• Regional Museum (in the Belgramoni-Tacco Palace): check on site
๐ก Tip: the best thing is simply to «get lost» in the narrow streets of the old town — many buildings carry information plaques on their walls. Stroll down Kidriฤeva Street to the sea and Carpaccio Square.
๐ 4. Carpaccio Square, the Waterfront, and the Marina
๐ก Interesting facts and useful information:
If you walk from Tito Square down Kidriฤeva Street towards the sea, you will reach the cosy seaside Carpaccio Square (Carpacciov trg) — the most atmospheric corner of Koper, with views over the Adriatic. It is a favourite relaxation spot for the locals themselves. ๐
๐น On the square stands the Taverna — a former salt warehouse, the heart of medieval Koper's salt wealth. Today it hosts the town's most important cultural events. ๐ง
๐น The square is named after Vittore Carpaccio — the celebrated Venetian painter whose works are kept in the town cathedral. ๐จ
๐น Along Kidriฤeva Street survive old Venetian houses, among them Carpaccio House and the «Casa Veneziana».
๐น Nearby is the marina with its yachts and numerous cafes and restaurants overlooking the sea, serving fresh seafood and local Istrian wine. ๐ท
๐น Koper also has a town beach near the centre — for those who fancy a swim in the Adriatic.
๐ History:
Carpaccio Square is the place where Koper's maritime and trading life flourished for centuries. The former salt warehouse (the Taverna) recalls the days when salt was the «white gold» of Istria and Koper was the salt-trading centre of the entire region. The salt monopoly brought wealth, the town built palaces and churches, and it was thanks to salt that all the Venetian splendour we admire today came to be.
The old port beside the square received Venetian galleys, fishing boats, and merchant ships. Gradually, as the sea around the island was filled in and Koper joined the mainland, the coastal area became the promenade with marina and waterfront that it is today.
๐ข How to get there from the cruise terminal:
• On foot: 8–12 minutes along the waterfront — the most pleasant option
• Through the old town: from Tito Square down Kidriฤeva Street, about 5 minutes on foot
๐ถ Cost:
• Strolling the square, waterfront, and marina: free
• Town beach: free
• Lunch at a seafood restaurant: main course 12–20 EUR
๐ก Tip: a wonderful place to end your walk around Koper — enjoy a coffee or fresh fish with a view over the Adriatic.
๐ณ๏ธ 5. Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle
๐ก Interesting facts and useful information:
Postojna Cave is Slovenia's leading natural attraction and the most visited cave in Europe. It is the most popular excursion from the cruise port of Koper, as it lies only about an hour away. โจ
๐น The cave system stretches for 24 kilometres, and visitors are carried deep inside on a unique underground electric train — the only one of its kind in the world. ๐
๐น Inside is an astonishing labyrinth of chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, among them the famous 5-metre white «Brilliant» — the symbol of the cave. ๐
๐น The cave temperature stays at a constant +10 °C all year round — warm clothing is essential even in summer. ๐งฅ
๐น Here lives the famous olm (the «human fish») — an endemic blind cave amphibian that locals call the «baby dragon». ๐
๐น Just 9 km away is Predjama Castle, embedded for more than 800 years in a 123-metre cliff. It holds the Guinness World Record as the largest cave castle in the world. ๐ฐ
๐ History:
Postojna Cave was shaped by the underground river Pivka over millions of years. The first tourists began visiting it as early as the start of the 19th century, and in 1872 rails were laid for the first cave train. Today it is the largest tourist cave in Europe, with ultra-modern facilities.
Predjama Castle is famous for the legend of the robber-knight Erazem of Predjama (Erasmus of Lueg) — a 15th-century local Robin Hood. According to the tale, he withstood a long siege because a secret tunnel in the cliff allowed provisions to reach the castle. The enemy defeated him only by treachery. Today the castle recreates knightly halls, a dining room, and the hunting trophies of its last owner, the Prince of Windischgrätz.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Koper:
• Organised excursion: the most convenient option — a transfer directly from the cruise terminal, about 60 minutes each way
• Taxi / private transfer: about 60 km, roughly one hour
• Free shuttle between the cave and Predjama Castle runs in high season (a ride of up to 20 minutes)
๐ถ Cost and opening hours:
• Postojna Cave (adults): 27.90 EUR (low season) / 30.90 EUR (high season, June–September)
• Predjama Castle (adults): 16.90 EUR
• Combined ticket (cave + castle): 40.30 EUR — about 10% cheaper than buying separately
• Combo «cave + castle + vivarium + Expo»: 46.60 EUR
• Opening hours: the cave and castle are open year-round; cave tours run hourly
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: book tickets online at least 1–2 days in advance, especially in summer — you must select an exact tour time. The official website is postojnska-jama.eu. The cave beneath Predjama Castle is open only from June to August (in winter the bats hibernate there). ๐ฆ
๐๏ธ 6. Ljubljana — the Capital of Slovenia
๐ก Interesting facts and useful information:
Ljubljana is the charming capital of Slovenia, which has preserved the cosy feel of a small town despite its metropolitan status. One of the most popular day trips from Koper — only about an hour away. ๐๏ธ
๐น Above the city rises Ljubljana Castle on its hill, reached by a funicular. From its tower opens a panorama of the whole city and the Alps. ๐ฐ
๐น The heart of the city is the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) and other masterpieces by architect Joลพe Pleฤnik, who shaped the look of modern Ljubljana. ๐
๐น Along the Ljubljanica River run cafe-lined embankments, bridges, and lively little streets. โ
๐น The famous Dragon on the Dragon Bridge is the symbol of the city. ๐ฒ
๐น The old town with its Baroque town hall, the Cathedral of St Nicholas, and the central market — perfect for a walking tour.
๐ History:
Ljubljana arose on the site of the Roman settlement of Emona, founded around 14 AD. Over the centuries the city passed under various rulers — from the Franks to the Habsburgs, who held it until the collapse of Austria-Hungary. A powerful earthquake in 1895 destroyed much of the city, after which Ljubljana was rebuilt in the Vienna Secession (Art Nouveau) style.
In the 20th century the city's appearance was defined by the brilliant architect Joลพe Pleฤnik, whose works — from the Triple Bridge to the National Library — are inscribed on the UNESCO list. Today Ljubljana is a cosy European capital, named European Green Capital in 2016.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Koper:
• Organised excursion: a full-day tour with a transfer from the terminal, about 80–90 minutes each way
• Private transfer / taxi: about 104 km, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes
• Scheduled bus: from Koper bus station (15 minutes' walk from the port), about 2 hours 15 minutes
๐ถ Cost:
• Strolling the city: free
• Funicular to the castle (return) + castle entry: about 16 EUR (adults)
• Organised full-day excursion from Koper: depends on the operator, please check
๐ก Tip: if you have a full day in port (10–12 hours), Ljubljana is entirely feasible to visit and still leaves time to return.
๐
7. Piran — the Jewel of the Slovenian Adriatic
๐ก Interesting facts and useful information:
Piran is the most beautiful coastal town in Slovenia, a living Venice with red roofs cascading down to the turquoise sea. Thanks to its closeness to the port, it makes an ideal half-day excursion. ๐
๐น The heart of the town is the oval Tartini Square (Tartinijev trg), named after Piran's native son — the celebrated composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini. ๐ป
๐น On the hill stands the Church of St George (Sv. Jurij) with a Venetian bell tower, a scaled-down copy of the campanile of St Mark's Basilica in Venice. โช
๐น The medieval town walls survive, offering one of the finest views of the Adriatic coast.
๐น The narrow streets tumbling down to the sea are steeped in the Venetian spirit — Piran was under Venetian rule for centuries.
๐น Nearby is the Portoroลพ resort with Slovenia's most popular beaches and the Seฤovlje Salt Pans. ๐ง
๐ History:
Piran has an ancient history reaching back to antiquity — its name is linked to the Greek word «pyr» (fire), because a lighthouse once burned on the cape to guide ships. For more than five centuries the town was under the Venetian Republic, which shaped its unmistakable look — Gothic palaces, narrow streets, and the oval square.
Piran's most famous son was the composer Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770), author of the celebrated «Devil's Trill». His monument stands in the middle of the main square, which until the late 19th century was an inner harbour — later filled in and turned into the present square. Thanks to its preserved historic fabric, Piran is regarded as one of the best-preserved medieval towns on the Adriatic.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Koper:
• Organised excursion / transfer: about 17 km, roughly 30 minutes' drive
• Taxi: about 30 minutes, convenient for small groups
• Scheduled bus: from Koper bus station, about 35 minutes (fewer services on weekends)
๐ถ Cost:
• Strolling the town: free
• Climbing the bell tower of St George's Church: a small fee (check on site)
• Organised transfer with free time in town: depends on the operator
๐ก Tip: Piran pairs beautifully with a visit to Koper in a single day — the town in the morning, then a transfer to Piran in the afternoon and a few hours of free time.
๐ฎ๐น 8. Trieste — the Austro-Hungarian Grandeur of Italy
๐ก Interesting facts and useful information:
Trieste is an elegant Italian port city just about 30 minutes' drive from Koper across the border. It is a chance to add a touch of Italian colour to your Slovenian day. ๐ฎ๐น
๐น Piazza Unità d'Italia — the largest seafront square in Europe, opening directly onto the sea. ๐
๐น The city has preserved its splendid Austro-Hungarian architecture from the days when Trieste was the chief port of the Habsburg Empire. ๐๏ธ
๐น Miramare Castle — a fairy-tale white palace on a cliff above the sea, built for Archduke Maximilian. ๐ฐ
๐น Trieste is famous for its historic cafes in the Viennese style and its own coffee tradition — it is one of Italy's coffee capitals. โ
๐น The writers James Joyce and Italo Svevo lived and worked here — the city has a rich literary heritage. ๐
๐ History:
Trieste was a free port of the Austrian Empire and the Habsburgs' main maritime gateway to the Mediterranean. In the 18th and 19th centuries the city flourished, which gave it its sumptuous imperial architecture. After the First World War Trieste passed to Italy, and in the 20th century it went through a complicated period in which its status was contested by various states.
Miramare Castle was built in 1856–1860 for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg — the very man who later became the short-lived Emperor of Mexico and met a tragic end. Today Trieste is a lively Italian port with a unique blend of Italian, Austrian, and Slavic cultures.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Koper:
• Organised excursion / transfer: about 30 minutes' drive across the Slovenian-Italian border
• Taxi / private transfer: about 30 minutes
โ ๏ธ Note: although the border between Slovenia and Italy is open (both countries are in the Schengen Area), always carry your passport.
๐ถ Cost:
• Strolling the city and Piazza Unità: free
• Miramare Castle (entry): about 12–15 EUR (check on site)
๐ก Tip: Trieste is an excellent choice for those who have already seen the Slovenian coast and want new impressions in a short time.
๐จ 9. Other Sights and Excursions Worth Your Attention
• ๐ง Lake Bled — Slovenia's most famous natural jewel: an emerald lake with an islet and a church, a castle on a cliff, and Alpine scenery. About 155 km, roughly 2 hours' drive — suitable for a full day in port.
• ๐ณ๏ธ Škocjan Caves — a UNESCO site, one of the largest underground canyons in the world, with vast chambers and an underground river. Less crowded than Postojna.
• ๐ด Lipica Stud Farm — the birthplace of the famous white Lipizzaner horses, bred here since 1580.

๐ชช Documents: bring a photocopy of your passport plus your Ship Card. A passport is required if you plan a trip to Trieste (Italy).
๐ถ Currency: Slovenia is in the euro zone. Keep 50–100 EUR in cash for small expenses (tickets, coffee, the market). ATMs are found throughout the old town.
๐ Clothing: comfortable shoes for the narrow cobbled streets. For Postojna Cave — warm clothing (a constant +10 °C inside, year-round).
๐ฑ Internet: download an offline Google Maps. The old town is compact and easily walked.
๐ Safety: Koper is one of the safest towns in Europe, and Slovenia has one of the lowest crime rates. Standard caution is quite enough.
โ๏ธ Sun protection: summers can be hot. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are well worth having.
๐ Free tourist train: on weekends during the cruise season, a little train carries passengers for free from the pier around the perimeter of the old town every half hour.
