Cruises to Ischia

Ischia — the volcanic jewel of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the largest island in the Bay of Naples. This is a place that captivates travellers on several fronts at once: healing thermal springs, medieval castles, stunning beaches, and vineyards climbing the slopes of a slumbering volcano. The island lies 30 kilometres from Naples in the northern part of the Bay of Naples — at the crossroads of ancient sea routes sailed for millennia by Greeks, Romans, Arab mariners, and Spanish conquistadors.
For the cruise traveller, Ischia is an unusual port of call with a character all its own: ships anchor in the bay and passengers reach the shore by tender boat — an adventure in itself. A call at Ischia typically offers 8–10 hours ashore, enough to soak in a thermal pool, explore the Aragonese Castle, and savour a glass of local wine with Monte Epomeo as your backdrop. 🌋

📋 Essential facts before you step ashore in Ischia:

đŸ›ī¸ History of Ischia — from Greek colonists to an island of thermal wonders
âŗ 2,700 years of civilised presence
The history of Ischia begins in the 8th century BC, when Euboean Greeks from the island of Euboea established the first colony in the Tyrrhenian Sea here — Pithecusae, meaning “Island of Monkeys” or, by another reading, “Island of Amphorae.” This was the earliest Greek settlement in Central Italy. The colonists traded metal with the Etruscans and cultivated the fertile volcanic soil. Around 650 BC, a volcanic eruption forced most of the Greeks to relocate to the mainland, to Cumae.
The Romans renamed the island “Aenaria” — the “Land of Wine” — and with good reason: its rich soil yielded exceptional grapes. Emperor Augustus himself grew so fond of the island that in 6 AD he traded it to the people of Naples in exchange for Capri — though he soon had second thoughts, as Ischia was too prone to earthquakes. The island then endured invasions by Vandals, Ostrogoths, Saracens, and Normans. Between the 11th and 15th centuries it was ruled by the Angevin and Aragonese dynasties. In 1441, the Aragonese King Alfonso V connected the castle rock to the island via a 220-metre stone causeway that still stands today.
âš”ī¸ From repeated conquests to resort fame
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Ischia suffered from raids by Turkish pirates under the famous admiral Barbarossa, who in 1543 captured more than 4,000 of the island's inhabitants. After Italian unification in 1861, the island became part of the new state, and its tourist reputation grew steadily on the back of its curative thermal springs. In the 20th century, Pablo Picasso, Ignazio Silone, Walter Benjamin, and Hans Werner Henze all vacationed here. The devastating earthquake of 1883, which destroyed much of Casamicciola, did not halt the island's development. Today Ischia is one of the most popular thermal spa destinations in the Mediterranean, welcoming more than 5 million visitors each year. đŸŒŋ

⚓ Ischia's port — an anchor berth at the heart of the Bay of Naples
📊 What cruise passengers need to know about the call
Ischia is a tender port: cruise ships do not dock at a quay but anchor in the bay. Passengers are taken ashore by tender boats — small vessels shuttling between the ship and the tender pier in the town of Ischia Porto. Each crossing takes between 10 and 20 minutes depending on the ship's anchorage position. ⚓
The island's main port — Ischia Porto — occupies the crater of an ancient volcano on the northeastern coast. In 1853, on the orders of King Ferdinand II, a canal was cut through the crater wall to the sea, creating a unique circular harbour approximately 350 metres in diameter. Tenders land at Porto di Ischia — right in the town centre, from where all major sights are accessible on foot or by bus.
âš ī¸ Important: the tender pier and the ferry jetty are located side by side. During peak hours (morning departures and evening returns) some waiting time is likely. Guests on ship-organised excursions have boarding priority; independent travellers receive tender tickets on a first-come, first-served basis in accordance with their cruise line's tendering procedure.

đŸšĸ How many ships does the port accommodate
Given the tendering logistics, the number of ships anchoring at Ischia at any one time is limited. Typically, between one and three cruise vessels anchor in the bay simultaneously. The port is not a turnaround port — ships call here solely as part of day stops on Mediterranean itineraries. The island's capacity for cruise tourism is limited, which is in fact an advantage: Ischia has not become a tourist conveyor belt and has retained a genuine, unspoiled atmosphere. 🌊

đŸĸ Cruise lines that call at Ischia
Ischia features on Mediterranean itineraries operated by many leading cruise brands: MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea, Seabourn, Windstar Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, and others. The island most commonly appears on routes that also include Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, and Capri. 🌍

💡 Interesting facts about Ischia and its port
A few surprising details will enrich your time on the island:
🌋 Ischia is not a volcano — it is a giant lava dome. Monte Epomeo (788 m), the island's highest point, is technically not a volcano but a “stagnation dome”: a mass of solidified magma pushed upward by tectonic forces. The last true eruption occurred in 1301–1302.
đŸē Ischia was the site of the earliest Greek settlement in Central Italy. Pithecusae, founded around 740 BC, predated Cumae on the mainland by more than a century and is several decades older than Rome itself.
♨ī¸ The island has more than 100 thermal springs with varying temperatures and mineral compositions. Some reach +90 °C. Volcanic activity heats the ground naturally — at certain beaches, steam literally rises through the sand.
đŸĻˆ The waters surrounding Ischia form part of the Marine Protected Area “Kingdom of Neptune” (Area Marina Protetta Regno di Nettuno), home to dolphins, sperm whales, and dozens of fish species.
🍷 The island produces “Ischia DOC” wine — a protected designation of origin since 1966. The local Biancolella grape yields light white wines with a floral bouquet. The Romans prized these wines above all others.
🏰 In the 16th century, the Aragonese Castle housed an entire community of 2,000 people — complete with monasteries, hospitals, a market, and even… an open-air nuns' cemetery, where bodies decomposed in stone chairs in full view of those who would come next. The purpose was to contemplate mortality.
📖 The poet Vittoria Colonna — the first woman to have her poetry published in Italy — lived in the Aragonese Castle with her husband and ran a literary salon there that Michelangelo Buonarroti himself attended.
⛹ī¸ Maronti Beach is the island's longest sandy beach, stretching more than 2 km. It can only be reached by boat or on foot via steep stone steps — there is no road access.
🇩đŸ‡Ē Ischia is particularly beloved by German travellers. The island ranks third among Italy's most popular seaside destinations for visitors from Germany, which is why German is so frequently heard here.

📍 Top sights in Ischia — must-sees for the cruise traveller
A cruise ship's call at Ischia typically lasts between 8 and 10 hours. Bear in mind that tender transfers will account for some of that time on both ends. Full details with photos, addresses, and opening hours are available in the “Sights & Attractions” section; below is a quick overview of the island's key locations.
🏰 Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese) — a majestic fortress on a volcanic rock connected to the island by a stone causeway. Over 2,500 years of unbroken history and a breathtaking panorama of the Bay of Naples.
♨ī¸ Thermal parks (Giardini Poseidon, Negombo) — the island's largest spa complexes, with dozens of thermal pools at different temperatures and with varying therapeutic properties.
🌋 Monte Epomeo — the island's highest peak (788 m), offering a stunning 360-degree view across the entire Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, Capri, and the Apennines.
đŸ˜ī¸ Ischia Ponte — the old fishermen's quarter of the town, with narrow lanes, colourful houses, and the causeway leading to the castle.
🌊 Sant'Angelo — a picturesque car-free fishing village on the island's southern tip, with a small cove and the volcanic Fumarole Beach.
🍷 Forio and Lacco Ameno — the island's most charming towns: Forio impresses with the clifftop church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, while Lacco Ameno is known for the famous “Mushroom Rock” (Il Fungo) and Negombo thermal park.
đŸ–ī¸ Maronti Beach (Spiaggia dei Maronti) — Ischia's longest wild beach, with volcanic fumaroles rising through the sand and crystal-clear water.

✨ Why choose a cruise that calls at Ischia
Ischia is one of those ports where the cruise traveller discovers a very different side of the Mediterranean — not museums and cathedrals, but living volcanic nature, ancient thermal traditions, and authentic Campanian life.
First, the nature is truly unique: this volcanic island has preserved an extraordinary diversity of landscapes — from pine forests on the slopes of Epomeo to extraordinary thermal beaches and crystal-clear coves. đŸŒŋ
Second, the spa culture here spans millennia: thermal bathing on Ischia traces its roots to the Greek colonists. No other Mediterranean island can match the sheer number of natural hot springs and thermal parks found here. ♨ī¸
Third, Ischia offers the unhurried atmosphere of authentic Southern Italy without the tourist overload of Capri and Sorrento — it is more affordable, more relaxed, and more genuine. 🍋

How to Get to the Cruise Port of Ischia

Ischia is an island in the Gulf of Naples with no airport of its own: the only way to arrive is by sea. For cruise passengers, this means the first step of the journey is a ferry or high-speed hydrofoil from Naples. The port of Ischia (Ischia Porto) sits in a beautifully sheltered natural bay on the north-eastern coast of the island and directly accommodates small and medium-sized cruise ships. Larger vessels anchor in the bay and bring passengers ashore by tender boat. Below is a comprehensive guide covering every arrival scenario, with current prices and insider tips from the Four Gates Group team. đŸŽ¯

📍 Where Exactly Is the Cruise Port of Ischia
The port of Ischia (Porto d'Ischia) occupies an ancient volcanic crater bay that has been transformed into a convenient harbour. This is where mainland ferry lines dock and cruise ships call.

For small cruise ships: direct berthing at Porto d'Ischia (left-hand quay, Riva Sinistra, facing the sea)
For large cruise ships: anchor in the bay + tender boats to Ischia Porto or Ischia Ponte pier (near the Aragonese Castle)
📌 GPS address: Via Iasolino, 80077 Ischia Porto NA, Italy
🌐 Coordinates: 40°44′53″N 13°56′33″E
đŸšļ Distance to Ischia Ponte centre: ~1.5 km on foot along the seafront

❗ Important: always check your cruise documents to confirm whether your ship will berth directly or use tenders. Tender operations depend on sea conditions and port traffic. Passengers with reduced mobility should notify the cruise line of any special requirements well in advance, as boarding a tender can require physical effort.

✈ī¸ From Naples Airport (NAP) to the Port of Ischia
Naples Capodichino International Airport (NAP) is the only major airport in the region, served by connecting flights via European hubs (Warsaw, Istanbul, Vienna and others). It is located approximately 15 km from Naples' ferry terminals. From the airport you need to reach one of Naples' two ferry piers and then board either a hydrofoil or a conventional ferry to Ischia.

🚕 Taxi to Naples ferry terminal — the fastest option
An official taxi from the airport to the Naples ferry piers (Molo Beverello or Calata Porta di Massa) takes 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.
Fixed fare: 21 EUR from the airport to the ferry pier (as of 2025–2026)
Payment: cash or card
💡 Four Gates tip: tell the driver straight away: “Molo Beverello” if you are taking a hydrofoil, or “Calata Porta di Massa” if you prefer the slower car ferry.

🚐 Alibus shuttle bus — the budget option
The airport shuttle Alibus runs between the airport, the central railway station (Stazione Centrale) and the ferry piers at Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa every 20–25 minutes.
Fare: 5 EUR per person
Journey time: approximately 20–35 minutes
âš ī¸ Limitations: luggage space is limited; the bus can be crowded during peak season

đŸšĸ Hydrofoil or ferry: Naples → Ischia Porto
Both types of vessel operate daily year-round; in season (April–October) departures run hourly or more frequently.
Hydrofoil: departs from Molo Beverello • journey time ~50 minutes • fares from 20 EUR one way
Ferry: departs from Calata Porta di Massa • journey time ~1 hour 30 min • fares from 6 EUR one way
Main operators: Alilauro, Caremar, Medmar, SNAV
💡 Tip: book tickets in advance online (ferryhopper.com, traghetti.com) or at the ticket windows by the piers — queues can be long on busy summer weekends

🚐 Private door-to-door transfer “airport → ferry → Ischia” — the most comfortable option
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, takes you to the correct pier and helps with your luggage. Ferry tickets are included in the package and purchased in advance — no queues, no language barrier.
Estimated cost: from 94 EUR for 1 person, from 112 EUR for 2 people, from 41 EUR per person for groups of 4–8 (ferry tickets included)
Advantages: flight monitoring, luggage assistance, English-speaking or Ukrainian-speaking guide
🤝 Four Gates Group arranges private transfers for its clients — simply provide your flight number when booking your cruise.

🚂 From Naples Railway Station to the Port of Ischia
If you arrive in Naples by train (high-speed Frecciarossa services from Rome, Milan or Florence, or regional trains from other Italian cities), you will arrive at Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi station). The ferry piers are approximately 2 km away.

🚕 Taxi: fixed fare of 15 EUR to Molo Beverello, ~10 minutes
🚇 Metro: Line 1, stop “Università” — then 650 m on foot to Molo Beverello; ticket ~1.30 EUR
🚌 Bus: several services from Piazza Garibaldi to the piers, departing every 10 minutes
💡 Tip: if you have heavy luggage, take a taxi — 10 minutes and you are already buying your ferry ticket.

⚓ Going Ashore: Tender or Pier?
Unlike large cruise ports, Ischia accommodates ships in two ways depending on their size:

đŸ›ŗī¸ Direct berthing (small and medium ships):
• The ship docks at Porto d'Ischia or Ischia Ponte
• Passengers walk ashore directly via the gangway
• From the pier to the centre of Ischia Porto — just 1–3 minutes on foot

🚤 Tender operation (large ships):
• The ship anchors in the bay
• Tender boats (the ship's own lifeboats or local vessels) ferry passengers ashore every 15–25 minutes
• Each tender crossing takes 5–15 minutes
• The service is free of charge for all passengers
• Passengers with pre-booked shore excursions are given priority tender tickets
âš ī¸ Note: tender operations may be suspended in rough weather — listen for announcements on board

đŸ™ī¸ Getting Around the Island from the Port
Once ashore at Ischia Porto, you have several practical transport options:

🚕 Taxi — convenient and fast
Taxis wait directly at the pier. The minimum fare for any journey is 15 EUR. A 30% surcharge applies for night rides (22:00–06:00).
• Ischia Porto → Ischia Ponte: 15 EUR
• Ischia Porto → Casamicciola: 20 EUR
• Ischia Porto → Lacco Ameno: 25 EUR
• Ischia Porto → Forio: 32 EUR
• Ischia Porto → Sant'Angelo: 50 EUR
Island taxi ranks: Piazza degli Eroi: +39 081 992 550; Arrival Marina: +39 081 900 369

đŸ›ē Calessino — Ischia's signature experience
Calessini are traditional island “tuk-tuks” converted into colourful open-air taxis. Perfect for small groups and romantic island tours, they can be hired for a full circuit of the island or used as a regular taxi. You will find them easily at the pier or on Piazza degli Eroi.

🚌 EAV Autolinee bus — the most affordable option
The bus terminal is just a few steps from the ferry pier in Ischia Porto — the island's main transport hub.
Single journey ticket (from a kiosk or newsagent): 1.70 EUR
100-minute ticket (from a kiosk/newsagent): 2.10 EUR
Ticket bought on board from the driver: 2.20 EUR
All-day ticket (valid until midnight): 5.10 EUR
Weekly ticket: 14.50 EUR
Children under 6: free
💡 Tip: buy tickets at kiosks or bars near the pier rather than from the driver — it is cheaper and more convenient

đŸ›ĩ Scooter or e-bike rental
Rental agencies are clustered right by the pier in Ischia Porto (for example, Super Mario Rent at Via Iasolino, 20 — a 2-minute walk from the hydrofoil dock).
50cc scooter: 20–32 EUR per day (a category B car licence is sufficient)
125cc scooter: 30–45 EUR per day (an A1 or A2 licence is required)
Electric bike: from 15 EUR per day
• Campania residents are prohibited from bringing cars to the island between April and October; tourists from other Italian regions and all foreign visitors may bring their own vehicle by ferry year-round

🚤 Water taxi
Water taxis operate between Ischia Ponte and Sant'Angelo and can take you to beaches and coves unreachable by road.
• Two operators: at Ischia Ponte and at Sant'Angelo
• Fares: 3–10 EUR per person one way, depending on the distance
💡 Tip: the water taxi from Sant'Angelo is the only practical way to reach Maronti Beach

🚗 Arriving by Car — What You Need to Know
âš ī¸ Key restriction: residents of the Campania region (Naples, Salerno, etc.) are prohibited from bringing vehicles to Ischia between April and October under an annual government decree. Foreign tourists face no such restriction and may bring a car by ferry year-round.

Car ferries: depart from Calata Porta di Massa (Naples) with Caremar and Medmar
Car + 1 passenger ticket: from 35–55 EUR one way, depending on vehicle size and season
Crossing time: ~1 hour 30 min
Parking on the island: in larger towns (Ischia Porto, Forio) parking is paid — ~2 EUR/hour; in Barano and Serrara Fontana it is free. In summer parking is very scarce — aim to arrive early
💡 Tip: for a one-day cruise call, a car on the island is unnecessary — buses and taxis cover all the key spots.

â™ŋ Accessibility for Passengers with Reduced Mobility
• ✅ The Ischia Porto pier is fitted with ramps and is wheelchair-accessible
• ✅ EAV buses have low floors and designated spaces for wheelchair users
• ✅ Official taxis can provide adapted vehicles on request
• âš ī¸ Tendering from large ships can be difficult for wheelchair users — contact your cruise line well in advance to arrange priority tender access or alternative arrangements
• âš ī¸ The island is hilly; some streets in historic areas are narrow and steep — plan your route in advance

⏰ When to Return to the Ship
Ischia is a port of call, not a home port. The ship departs at a fixed time, so:
🕐 Recommended return time to the pier: 90–120 minutes before the ship's departure
🕐 If travelling by bus: allow extra time — routes can be delayed during peak hours
🕐 If you have visited Sant'Angelo or Forio: set off at least 1.5 hours before all-aboard — a taxi back will take 30–50 minutes
❗ Remember: the ship will not wait for latecomers. If you miss the departure, you will need to make your own way to the next port of call at your own expense. All Four Gates Group vouchers include the exact all-aboard deadline for your specific sailing.

💡 Insider Tips from the Four Gates Group Team
Over years of working with Ischia, our specialists have gathered tried-and-tested advice to help you make the most of your day on the island:

â›ĩ Check your disembarkation format in advance. Find out from your cruise documents or the ship's daily programme whether you will berth directly or go ashore by tender. If it is a tender port, budget extra time in the morning — queues can build up during the busy first hours.

đŸŽŸī¸ Book your ferry tickets in advance. On summer Saturdays and Sundays, ferries from Naples to Ischia sell out quickly. If your flight arrives in Naples and you plan to spend a night on the island before your cruise, book your ticket online ahead of time.

🚌 Change buses at Piazza degli Eroi. This is the island's main bus interchange, situated between Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte. From here you can reach any part of the island without changing again.

đŸ›ĩ Renting a scooter is the most liberating way to explore. In a single day you can ride through all six municipalities of Ischia and stop wherever you like. Rental agencies are right at the pier and queues are rare.

💧 Carry cash. While most taxis and some buses now accept cards, the small bars and kiosks where you buy bus tickets are cash-only. A handful of 5–10 EUR notes will come in very handy.

🌊 Leave yourself plenty of time for the return journey. If you are visiting Ischia independently (not on a cruise), note that ferries back to Naples are packed on Sunday evenings and public holidays. Head back a little earlier and save yourself the stress.

📱 Download these apps before you go: Moovit or Google Maps (offline island map), Ferryhopper (ferry tickets), Google Translate with the Italian language pack — useful in small cafés and local shops.

Sights and Landmarks of Ischia: A Complete Guide for Cruise Travelers

Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples — a volcanic island of around 46 km² where medieval castles, unique thermal springs, lush botanical gardens, and breathtaking beaches come together in one extraordinary place. For a cruise passenger with 8–10 hours ashore, the key is to plan your time wisely between the island's highlights while saving energy for a stroll through its ancient lanes. Below is a thoroughly researched guide to the island's main attractions, with up-to-date 2026 prices, opening hours, and precise directions from the cruise pier at Ischia Porto. đŸŽ¯

🏰 1. Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese)
💡 Interesting Facts:
The Aragonese Castle is an island within an island: a small volcanic rock of 56,000 m² rising 113 metres above sea level, connected to Ischia Ponte by a 220-metre stone bridge. It is the island's top tourist attraction and one of the most impressive medieval castles in the Mediterranean. đŸ¯
🔹 You can reach the castle by two routes: on foot along an ancient mule track carved into the rock, or by panoramic lift installed in the late 1970s and tunnelled directly through the basalt.
🔹 At the summit lies an entire medieval citadel: a cathedral, monastery, prison, catacombs, gardens, several churches, and terraces with panoramic views over the whole island and the Bay of Naples.
🔹 The Convent of the Poor Clares preserves a remarkable circular cemetery, where nuns once sat in stone chairs around a central space awaiting natural death — so that the sisters could contemplate earthly transience. 💀
🔹 The castle appears in Umberto Eco's novel "The Name of the Rose" — some scholars believe the Aragonese Castle partly inspired the great author.
🔹 During World War II the castle held prisoners of war. Today it houses contemporary art galleries, a restaurant, and the hotel "Il Monastero" — the only hotel in the world set inside a castle on an island.

📜 History:
The first fortification on this rock dates back to 474 BC, when Syracusan tyrant Hiero I built a defensive tower here to guard against Etruscan raids. Over the centuries the rock was held by Parthenopean Greeks, Romans, Normans, Swabians, and Angevins in turn.
The castle took its present form under Alfonso I of Aragon in the mid-15th century (hence the name): in 1441 he connected the islet to Ischia with a stone bridge and rebuilt the fortress in the Late Gothic style. The castle was home to Vittoria Colonna — the foremost female poet of the Renaissance, whom Michelangelo held above all others and with whom he corresponded for many years.
In the 18th century the castle served as a stronghold against pirates and later passed to the Bourbons. After Italian unification in the 1860s the fortress became a prison for Risorgimento activists, which was abolished in 1860. In the 20th century it passed into private ownership and was gradually transformed into a tourist complex.

đŸšĸ Getting There from Ischia Porto Pier:
Taxi: 5–10 minutes, approximately 10 EUR. Address: Aragonese Castle, 80077 Ischia Ponte
On foot: 20–30 minutes along the waterfront through Ischia Porto to Ischia Ponte. A scenic walk along the sea
EAV Bus (route 177): from the bus terminal at Ischia Porto to the castle, 15 minutes, ticket 1.50 EUR

đŸ’ļ Prices and Opening Hours:
Admission ticket: 12 EUR (adults, including lift), 6 EUR (concession), 3 EUR (primary school pupils)
Opening hours: daily 09:30–19:00 (summer), 09:30–17:30 (winter)
Guided tour (2 hrs): from 50 EUR per person, including ticket
âš ī¸ Important: the castle has many steep steps and uneven surfaces. Sturdy footwear is essential. Visitors with reduced mobility may access the Terrace of the Immaculate Conception partially — advance booking required at +39 081 992 834.

đŸŒŋ 2. La Mortella Gardens (Giardini La Mortella)
💡 Interesting Facts:
La Mortella is one of Italy's most beautiful private gardens and a celebrated jewel of world landscape architecture, home to over 3,000 plant species from every corner of the Earth. The name comes from the wild myrtle (Myrtus communis) that once covered this volcanic hollow. 🌸
🔹 The garden is divided into two sections: the Valley Garden (lower) with tropical plants, lotus and water-lily ponds, and the Hill Garden (upper) with sea views, vineyards, and cypress avenues. 🌊
🔹 During the spring and autumn seasons the garden hosts chamber music concerts in the Recital Hall, and in summer symphony evenings are held in the open-air Greek Theatre. đŸŽļ
🔹 At the top of the Hill Garden are the graves of the founders — Sir William and Lady Susana Walton. The surrounding views of Ischia and the Tyrrhenian Sea are deeply moving.
🔹 The garden has a museum dedicated to William Walton — one of the greatest British composers of the 20th century — as well as a unique bookshop and art gallery in the former nuns' refectory.
🔹 The garden covers just 2 hectares, but its tiered layout makes it feel far more spacious. The recommended minimum visit time is 2 hours.

📜 History:
In 1949, British composer Sir William Walton moved to Ischia with his Argentinian wife Susana in search of peace for his work. They purchased a plot in Forio — a barren volcanic hollow with nothing but wild rocks and myrtle.
The Waltons entrusted the garden's design to renowned British landscape architect Russell Page — creator of the Frick gardens in New York and numerous Versailles restorations. Page set the garden into the natural valley terrain, preserving the volcanic rocks and making water the central element of the composition: rushing streams, still pools, waterfalls, and fountains flow through every level.
Sir William Walton died in 1983 and is buried in the garden. After his death, Susana continued to develop La Mortella and established the William Walton Foundation and La Mortella, which each year supports young musicians from around the world. Susana Walton passed away in 2010 and also rests here.

đŸšĸ Getting There from Ischia Porto Pier:
Taxi: 25–30 minutes, 30 EUR. Address: Via Francesco Calise, 45, 80075 Forio d'Ischia
EAV Bus (routes CS or CD): from the bus terminal to the stop near Forio, 25–30 minutes, ticket 1.50 EUR. From the stop it is a 5-minute walk to the garden entrance

đŸ’ļ Prices and Opening Hours (2026 season):
Garden admission: 15 EUR (adults), 12 EUR (concession), 8 EUR (children 6–18), free (children under 5)
Family ticket (2 adults + up to 3 children): 25 EUR
"Concert + garden" ticket: from 20 EUR
Opening hours: 2 April — 1 November 2026, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday only, 09:00–19:00 (last admission 18:00)
âš ī¸ Important: the garden is closed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Check the schedule before visiting at lamortella.org. The Hill Garden has steep steps — wear comfortable shoes.

🌋 3. Monte Epomeo — the island's highest peak
💡 Interesting Facts:
Monte Epomeo is Ischia's highest point at 789 metres above sea level. It is not a classic crater volcano but a unique geological phenomenon — a so-called "stagnation dome": a giant block of the Earth's crust pushed upward by tectonic forces through layers of volcanic rock. The island's last eruption occurred in 1302. đŸŒŋ
🔹 On a clear day the summit offers a 360-degree panorama: the entire island laid out below, the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, the island of Capri, the Sorrento Peninsula, and even the Pontine Islands.
🔹 At the very top stands the Chapel of San Nicola di Bari (1459), carved directly into the tufa rock beside a traditional inn. Both structures are literally hewn from the stone — with no external masonry. đŸĒ¨
🔹 Most of the trails to the summit pass through chestnut forests and vineyards where the "Eppomeo" and "Biancolella" grape varieties are grown for Ischia's celebrated wines.
🔹 The mountain lies within the Marine Protected Area "Kingdom of Neptune" (Area Marina Protetta Regno di Nettuno).

📜 History:
Ischia was formed by large-scale volcanic activity more than 150,000 years ago. Monte Epomeo began to rise about 33,000 years ago when a tectonic block was slowly forced upward by magmatic processes. The Greeks who founded the first colony on the island in the 8th century BC regarded the mountain as the home of the god Typhon — the fire-breathing monster of Greek mythology imprisoned in its depths.
In the Middle Ages the slopes of Epomeo filled with monasteries and hermit retreats carved directly into the tufa. One such retreat — the Chapel of San Nicola — has survived to this day and makes the most dramatic finale to the hiking trail.

đŸšĸ Getting There from Ischia Porto Pier:
EAV Bus (routes CS or CD) to the village of Fontana: 30–40 minutes, ticket 1.50 EUR. The main trail to the summit begins at Fontana's village square
Taxi to Fontana: 25–30 minutes, approximately 25–30 EUR
On foot from Fontana: 3 km one way, 600 m elevation gain, ascent time 50–60 minutes, descent 40–50 minutes (moderate difficulty)

đŸ’ļ Prices and Practical Information:
Ascent: free (open natural trail)
Inn at the summit: food and drinks from 5–10 EUR, cards accepted
âš ī¸ Tip: set out no later than 09:30–10:00 — in summer the midday sun beats down mercilessly on the exposed sections of the trail. Essentials: hiking shoes with non-slip soles, plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen. Trails become slippery in winter and after heavy rain.

♨ī¸ 4. Thermal Parks: Negombo and Poseidon
💡 Interesting Facts:
Ischia is the "island of thermal springs": across its 46 km² there are more than 100 natural thermal outlets with temperatures ranging from +20 to +98°C. The island's thermal water is rich in minerals and rare trace elements and, according to scientific research, has proven therapeutic value for joint, skin, and respiratory conditions. 💧
🔹 Negombo is the island's most refined thermal park, set in the Bay of San Montano in Lacco Ameno: 13 thermal pools of varying temperatures arranged in terraces down a hillside through tropical vegetation, with a private sandy beach, restaurant, hammam, jacuzzis, and a Kneipp therapy path. đŸŒē
🔹 Poseidon (Giardini Poseidon) is Ischia's largest thermal park: more than 20 pools of different types set on terraces overlooking the Bay of Citara in Forio. The largest park by area on the island.
🔹 Some thermal pools maintain temperatures of up to +37–39°C year-round thanks to ongoing underground volcanic activity.
🔹 One of the best free options is Sorgeto Cove (Baia di Sorgeto) near Sant'Angelo: a natural underwater thermal vent straight into the sea. Hot water bubbles up through the rocks into the Tyrrhenian Sea — you can bathe in a natural open-air "jacuzzi". Free of charge, but only reachable on foot (a steep 15-minute path) or by water taxi. 🐚

📜 History:
The thermal properties of Ischia were known in ancient Rome: according to Pliny the Elder, the island of Aenaria (the ancient Roman name for Ischia) served as a place of rest and healing for the Republic's grandees. Agrippina the Younger, mother of Nero, kept a villa here.
Modern thermal tourism on the island began in the 19th century when the Neapolitan aristocracy started visiting en masse for "water cures". Negombo first opened its gates in 1946 — the first park on the island — and today ranks among the most prestigious thermal complexes in the Mediterranean.

đŸ˜ī¸ 5. Sant'Angelo and the island's picturesque villages
💡 Interesting Facts:
Sant'Angelo is Ischia's most enchanting village: a labyrinth of narrow lanes, whitewashed fishermen's houses, and a tiny harbour of colourful fishing boats stretching from a rocky promontory connected to the island by a narrow sandy isthmus. 🎨
🔹 Sant'Angelo is a car-free zone: all motorised traffic is left in a car park several hundred metres away. The village itself is peaceful and unhurried.
🔹 Near Sant'Angelo lies Maronti Beach, considered the island's finest: 1.5 km of black volcanic sand with natural underground thermal vents breaking through the beach itself. In some spots hot steam rises straight from the sand! 🌊
🔹 Lacco Ameno is famous for its "Mushroom" — Il Fungo — a volcanic tufa formation shaped like a mushroom protruding from the sea right in front of the waterfront. One of Ischia's most recognisable symbols. 🍄
🔹 The town of Forio — the largest on the western side of the island — is known for the church of Santa Maria del Soccorso perched on a cliff above the sea, one of the most popular sunset-watching spots on the entire Campanian coast. 🌅
🔹 Ischia Ponte is the oldest part of the main town, where the Aragonese Castle stands. Ancient lanes, fish restaurants, and the "Fishermen's Beach" (Spiaggia dei Pescatori) with castle views make it one of the most romantic spots on the island.

📜 History:
Ischia is one of the oldest Greek colonies in the West: the first settlement was founded by Euboean Greeks from Chalcis as far back as 770–750 BC, and was named Pithecussai — possibly from the Greek "πιθος" (jar) because of local pottery production, or from "πíθηκος" (monkey). It is the earliest Greek colony in the Mediterranean, older even than Cumae on the mainland of Campania.
In the Roman Imperial period the island was known as Aenaria and was a favourite retreat of the aristocracy. After the fall of Rome, Ischia was swept by Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans — and each wave left its mark on the island's architecture, culture, and cuisine. In the 19th century Ibsen rested here and wrote part of "Peer Gynt" on Ischia, while the painter Jacques-Louis David spent his final years on the island. đŸ–ŧī¸

âš ī¸ Important to know before going ashore
🕐 "All aboard" rule: you must be back on the ship 60 minutes before departure. If you are late — the ship will not wait, and catching up with it at the next port will be at your own expense.
đŸĒĒ Documents: carry a photocopy of your passport and your cruise card (Ship Card).
đŸ’ļ Cash: have 50–100 EUR in cash for small expenses (bus, market, entry fees).
👟 Footwear: comfortable shoes — you will walk 8–12 km. Non-slip soles are a must for the Aragonese Castle. For thermal parks, bring a swimsuit and towel (or hire on site).
☀ī¸ Sun protection: summer temperatures reach +32°C. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential — especially during the ascent of Monte Epomeo.
🚌 EAV buses: buy tickets in advance at shops or the bus station in Ischia Porto — drivers cannot always sell them on board. Always validate your ticket in the machine on the bus.
đŸŒĄī¸ Thermal parks: if you have cardiovascular conditions or are pregnant, consult a doctor before bathing in thermal pools.
đŸšĸ Island logistics: Ischia is not a tender port for large ships — cruise liners typically berth directly at Ischia Porto or Ischia Ponte. Distances between the island's attractions are considerable — allow time for transfers.
