Cruises from Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik - the pearl of the Adriatic and one of Europe's most picturesque cruise harbours. This is a city that draws millions of travellers every year. The pearl of southern Dalmatia stretches across the very south of Croatia, on the rocky shore of the Adriatic Sea, between turquoise waters and the slopes of Mount Srฤ. Here more than thirteen centuries of history intertwine with medieval fortress walls, the red tiled roofs of the Old Town sit beside crystal-clear waters, and a morning coffee on the marble flagstones of the Stradun can easily turn into dinner overlooking a harbour that still remembers the merchants of the Republic of Ragusa.
For the cruise traveller, Dubrovnik is far more than a dot on a route map. It is one of the main Adriatic ports of call and the most visited cruise port in Croatia, where liners arrive during voyages across the Adriatic and the Eastern Mediterranean. In 2024 the Port of Dubrovnik welcomed around 514 thousand cruise passengers and became the country's most popular cruise destination — that year liners called here 513 times. By these figures Dubrovnik confidently tops the ranking of Croatian cruise ports and stands among the ten largest cruise harbours of the Mediterranean. ๐ข
๐ Before setting off on a cruise from Dubrovnik or stepping ashore for a few hours' call, here are the key things to know:
๐ญ๐ท Country: Croatia
๐ Region: Dubrovnik-Neretva County (Dalmatia)
๐ฅ Population: around 43 thousand residents (metropolitan area — over 66 thousand)
๐ Area: about 143 km²
๐ฃ๏ธ Languages: Croatian (official); English is widely spoken in the tourist area
๐ถ Currency: euro (€) — since 1 January 2023, replacing the kuna
๐ Time zone: CET (UTC+1), in summer CEST (UTC+2) — one hour behind Kyiv time
โ๏ธ Climate: Mediterranean, with mild winters (+8…+14 °C) and warm summers (+26…+30 °C)
โ๏ธ Nearest airport: Dubrovnik Airport (DBV, ฤilipi) — 15.5 km from the city
โ Official name of the cruise port: Luka Dubrovnik (Port Gruลพ)
๐บ๏ธ Port location: the Gruลพ district, about 3 km northwest of the Old Town
๐๏ธ The history of Dubrovnik — from ancient Epidaurum to the cruise pearl of the Adriatic
โณ More than 13 centuries of maritime history
The history of Dubrovnik is, above all, the history of its sea and its trade. The city was founded in the 7th century by settlers from ancient Epidaurum (present-day Cavtat), fleeing barbarian invasions. The first Latin settlement, named Ragusa, arose on a rocky island separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. On the neighbouring shore lived Croats, and in the 12th century the two settlements were united by filling in the channel — in its place arose the city's main street, the famous Stradun (Placa).
As early as 1022 Ragusa became the seat of an independent Catholic archbishopric, and from the 12th century it grew into one of the principal trading centres of the Adriatic. Today, strolling along the marble flagstones of the Stradun, polished to a shine, the traveller walks exactly along the line that once divided island from mainland — a rare case in which a street literally stands where the sea once was.
โ๏ธ From the Republic of Ragusa to the modern pearl of the Adriatic
In 1358, having freed itself from Venetian rule, the city formed the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) — a small but highly important maritime trading state of the Middle Ages. Its possessions stretched along the Dalmatian coast from Neum to the Bay of Kotor, encompassing the Pelješac Peninsula and the islands. The republic practised skilful diplomacy, maintained a powerful merchant fleet and preserved its independence for centuries by balancing between Venice and the Ottoman Empire. The state's motto — «Libertas» (Liberty) — still adorns the city's flags. ๐ด
In 1667 the city survived a devastating earthquake, after which it was rebuilt, and in 1808 the Republic of Ragusa was abolished by Napoleon. The 20th century brought Dubrovnik new trials: during the war of 1991–1992 the historic centre came under intense shelling, and it was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger. The city was subsequently meticulously restored, and today Dubrovnik is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations. ๐ฅ Its worldwide fame was further boosted by the filming of the series «Game of Thrones», in which the Old Town played the role of King's Landing.
โ The Port of Dubrovnik — the gateway to the southern Adriatic
๐ The scale and structure of the port
The modern Port Gruลพ is the main maritime gateway of southern Croatia. Cruise liners dock in the Gruลพ district (in Croatian «Gruลพ» means «cargo port»), located about 3 kilometres northwest of the historic Old Town. It is reached not only by cruise ships but also by the regular ferries of the Jadrolinija company, which link the city with the Elaphiti Islands (Šipan, Lopud, Koloฤep) and with the Italian port of Bari.
Large liners moor at the quayside berths of Gruลพ, while smaller vessels on certain itineraries anchor in the open sea near the island of Lokrum, and their passengers are brought ashore by tender boats straight to the Old Harbour by the Pile Gate. From Gruลพ to the Old Town it is usually about 15 minutes — by shuttle bus or city routes. โจ Local buses No. 1, 1A, 1B and 3 connect the port with the Old Town, and the one-way fare is around 4 euros.
๐ข How many liners the port receives
The Port of Dubrovnik handles hundreds of cruise calls every year: in 2024 it recorded 513 cruise ship calls. The city has long been fighting overtourism, so the municipal authorities have introduced limits on the number of liners present in the port at the same time: no more than two large cruise ships are permitted per day. This step is intended to ease the pressure on the cramped Old Town, whose area is bounded by medieval walls. ๐
๐ข Which cruise lines operate from Dubrovnik
The Port of Dubrovnik is visited by liners of virtually all the world's leading cruise brands: MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard, Oceania Cruises, Silversea, Viking and many others. This makes Dubrovnik one of the most appealing points on Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean itineraries. ๐
๐ก Interesting facts about Dubrovnik and its port
Your acquaintance with the city will be richer if you know a few less obvious details:
๐ก๏ธ Dubrovnik's motto is «Liberty». The Latin word «Libertas» was the watchword of the Republic of Ragusa, which for centuries skilfully preserved its independence among powerful neighbours through diplomacy rather than arms.
๐ฐ Dubrovnik's city walls are almost unrivalled. A ring of fortress walls about 1.9 km long surrounds the Old Town, reaching 25 metres in height in places, and throughout its history no enemy ever managed to take it by storm.
๐ Dubrovnik established quarantine among the first in the world. As far back as 1377 the Republic of Ragusa officially introduced compulsory isolation of arriving ships for 40 days — this is precisely where the word «quarantine» comes from (from the Italian «quaranta» — forty).
๐ฌ The Old Town became King's Landing. Scenes of the series «Game of Thrones» were filmed right on the streets and walls of Dubrovnik, turning the city into a place of pilgrimage for fans from all over the world.
๐ง Fountains from the 15th century still work in the city. The Large and Small Onofrio Fountains, built around 1438, still supply drinking water delivered by an aqueduct more than 11 kilometres long.
โช One of Europe's oldest pharmacies is here. The pharmacy of the Franciscan monastery has operated continuously since 1317 and is considered the third oldest functioning pharmacy on the continent.
๐ณ The island of Lokrum is wrapped in legend. According to tradition, on this green islet opposite the harbour King Richard the Lionheart of England was shipwrecked while returning from a crusade.
๐๏ธ The best view of the city is from Mount Srฤ. Above Dubrovnik rises a hill 412 metres high, to whose summit leads a modern cable car — the only one along the entire Adriatic coast.
๐ Dubrovnik's main attractions — must-sees for the cruise traveller
A cruise liner's call in Dubrovnik usually lasts from 6 to 10 hours, so it is important to choose your priorities in advance. You will find a detailed list with photos, addresses and opening hours in the «Sights and Points of Interest» section, and below is a brief overview of the landmark locations that define the city's character.
๐ฐ The City Walls — the main symbol of Dubrovnik, a ring of fortress walls about 1.9 km long encircling the Old Town. A walk along the top of the walls offers unsurpassed panoramas of the red roofs, the sea and the island of Lokrum — an essential part of the programme.
๐ณ The Stradun (Placa) — the main street of the Old Town, a polished marble artery about 300 metres long, connecting the Pile Gate with the clock tower. Once a sea channel ran in its place, separating island from mainland.
โช The Cathedral and the Church of St Blaise — the spiritual heart of the city. The Baroque church is dedicated to St Blaise, the heavenly patron of Dubrovnik, whose figure can be seen on facades and gates throughout the city.
๐๏ธ The Sponza Palace and the Rector's Palace — masterpieces of the civic architecture of the Republic of Ragusa. The Sponza Palace combines Gothic and Renaissance, while the Rector's Palace was the residence of the state's rector and now houses a history museum.
๐ง The Onofrio Fountain — a large sixteen-sided fountain from the 15th century just beyond the Pile Gate, from which drinking water still flows. One of the most recognisable symbols of the city and a favourite spot for photographs.
๐ก Mount Srฤ and the cable car — a hill 412 metres high with the finest viewpoint over the Old Town and the Adriatic. A modern cable car carries you to the top in just a few minutes; at the summit are the Imperial Fort, the Homeland War Museum and a restaurant with a panorama.
๐๏ธ The island of Lokrum — a green nature-reserve islet ten minutes by boat from the Old Harbour. A botanical garden, the ruins of a Benedictine monastery, peacocks and a salt lake make it ideal for a short escape from the city heat.
โช The Franciscan Monastery — a friary with a beautiful Romanesque-Gothic cloister and one of Europe's oldest working pharmacies, founded in 1317.
๐๏ธ Banje Beach — a pebble cove right beneath the city walls, offering the classic postcard panorama of the Old Town and the island of Lokrum.
โจ Why choose a cruise from Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is a rare case of a city where the sea, history and scenery merge into a single unforgettable picture.
First, it offers a concentration of impressions: the entire Old Town fits compactly within the ring of walls, so even during a few hours' call you can see the main masterpieces. โ๏ธ
Second, it offers wonderful itineraries: Dubrovnik is part of Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean cruise programmes that link it with Venice, Kotor, Corfu, the Greek islands and the ports of Italy. ๐
Third, the port itself is already an experience: a liner's arrival into the harbour of Gruลพ, the panorama of red roofs from on board and the proximity of the legendary walls make every call special. ๐ท

How to Get to the Cruise Terminal in Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik — the pearl of the Adriatic, where hundreds of cruise ships arrive every year, but the journey from the airport to the cruise pier has its own particularities. The Port of Gruลพ, where around 90% of all cruise ships dock, sits 3 kilometres northwest of the historic Old Town and has neither a metro nor a rail link — in fact, Dubrovnik has no trains at all. Below is a proven step-by-step guide with all transfer options, current prices and tips from the cruise specialists at Four Gates Group. ๐ฏ
๐ Where exactly the Dubrovnik cruise port is located
Dubrovnik's main cruise hub is the Port of Gruลพ, a modern passenger complex stretching along a pier roughly one kilometre long. Unlike many Mediterranean ports, there are no several separate numbered terminals here — all ships dock along a single waterfront.
โ Port of Gruลพ — the main cruise pier, receiving all large ships from Royal Caribbean, MSC, Costa, Norwegian, Celebrity, Princess and others. Because of the high number of vessels, the port authority may assign your ship one of several berths along the pier:
• Across from the fish and vegetable market — closest to the passenger terminal and bus stops
• Near the local ferry arrivals area — beside the Jadrolinija building
• Under the Franjo Tuฤman Bridge (Most dr. Franja Tuฤmana) — the most distant point, up to 800 metres from the passenger terminal
๐ GPS address: Obala Stjepana Radiฤa, 20000 Dubrovnik, Croatia
๐ถ Distance to the centre: about 3 km to the Old Town (Pile Gate)
โ Old Port (Stara luka) — a small historic harbour right beside the Old Town walls. Large ships do not call here — the harbour is too small. It is used only by small luxury vessels that anchor in the bay and bring passengers ashore by tender (small boats), as well as by excursion boats to Lokrum Island, Cavtat and Mlini.
โ Important: in Dubrovnik your ship may berth at any point along the Gruลพ pier. The exact berth and the type of boarding (from the pier or by tender) are always stated in your cruise voucher. Check the details 48–72 hours before boarding — on peak days the port authority sometimes reassigns berths.
โ๏ธ From Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) to the cruise terminal
Dubrovnik International Airport (Zraฤna luka Dubrovnik), located near the town of ฤilipi, is roughly 22 kilometres from the Port of Gruลพ. It is the region's only airport receiving international flights, including those from Ukraine via transit hubs — Warsaw, Istanbul, Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich. The trip takes from 30 minutes (taxi) to 1 hour (public transport).
๐ Taxi — the fastest option
Official taxis wait in a queue at the arrivals hall exit. The cars are metered, though an approximate fixed fare often applies on the airport–city route.
• Travel time: 30–40 minutes (depending on traffic)
• Approximate fare to the Port of Gruลพ (as of 2026): around 40–50 euros
• Payment: cash or card (in most vehicles)
• Apps: Uber and Bolt operate in Dubrovnik and are often cheaper than a classic taxi
๐ก Tip from Four Gates: as soon as you get into the car, tell the driver you need the cruise pier in Gruลพ specifically (cruise port, Gruลพ) — this avoids being dropped at the bus station or the ferry terminal.
๐ Private transfer — the most comfortable option
If you are travelling as a family, a group or with a lot of luggage, this is the optimal choice. The driver will meet you in the arrivals hall with a name board, help with your bags and take you straight to your ship's gangway at a fixed price.
• Price: from 40 euros for a sedan (1–3 people), from 65 euros for a minivan (4–8 people)
• Travel time: 30–35 minutes
• Advantages: fixed price, English-speaking driver, flight monitoring, no waiting in the taxi queue
๐ค Four Gates Group arranges private transfers for its clients — simply provide your flight number when booking the cruise.
๐ Platanus shuttle bus — the budget option
The official airport shuttle run by Platanus is the cheapest way to reach the port. The buses operate in line with the flight schedule: the vehicle waits in the parking area before your plane even lands and departs roughly 30 minutes after each arrival.
Route:
1๏ธโฃ After collecting your luggage, find the Platanus counter in the arrivals hall (on the right) or the post marked «Shuttle bus» near the exit
2๏ธโฃ The bus makes one stop near the Old Town (Ploฤe Gate) and then continues to its final stop — the main bus station in Gruลพ
3๏ธโฃ From the bus station to the passenger terminal it is a 2–3 minute walk
Price: 10 euros one way, 15 euros return (the open return ticket is valid for 15 days); children under 6 travel free
Travel time: about 35 minutes to Gruลพ
โ ๏ธ Important: in the shoulder season (April–May, October–December) the timetable depends on the flight schedule — check current departures on the operator's website. If your flight is delayed, you can take the next shuttle — the ticket is valid for any departure on the same day.
๐ Libertas city bus — the cheapest option
The Libertas city buses run from the airport area, but it is most convenient to use them once you are in the city. For the trip to the port itself the Platanus shuttle is more practical, but if you are arriving from the city centre, the information in the section below will be useful.
• Ticket price: 1.73 euros (purchased in advance, valid for 60 minutes) or 2.50 euros from the driver on board
• Payment: cash to the driver or at Libertas kiosks
๐๏ธ From the Old Town and central Dubrovnik to the cruise terminal
If you have spent a night or several days at a hotel in or near the Old Town, you have several ways to reach your ship:
๐ Taxi and ride-sharing — fast and convenient with luggage. The trip from Pile Gate to the Port of Gruลพ takes 10–15 minutes.
• Price: 10–20 euros on the meter, up to 30–35 euros during peak-hour traffic
• Apps: Uber and Bolt are especially popular in 2026 — for a family of four this is often cheaper than the ship's shuttle (around 10–15 euros per car)
• Pickup zone: the Gruลพ terminal has a dedicated ride-share area just past the taxi rank
๐ Libertas city bus (lines 1A, 1B, 3) — the most economical way:
• Route: from Pile Gate (the main transport hub by the Old Town) to a stop in the Port of Gruลพ area
• Price: 1.73 euros (ticket bought in advance) or 2.50 euros from the driver on board; a day ticket is 5.31 euros
• Travel time: 10–20 minutes depending on traffic
• Frequency: every 10–15 minutes in peak season (June–September), every 20–30 minutes in the shoulder season
• Stops near the port: the first is right across from the cruise terminal, the second is by the port building with the tourist information office
๐ก Tip: always validate your ticket immediately after boarding. Line 8 also serves this route but less frequently.
๐ Cruise Line Shuttle — an organised bus run by your cruise company:
• Price: usually around 15 euros return (free on some lines)
• Route: straight from the ship's gangway to Pile Gate
• Convenience: ideal if you would rather not deal with local transport
๐ถ On foot — theoretically possible, but impractical:
• Distance: about 3 km from the port to the Old Town
• Time: 30–40 minutes
• Not recommended in hot weather or with heavy luggage — the route runs along a busy road
๐ By your own car — car parks near the port
If you arrive at the port in your own or a rental car, the Gruลพ area offers several parking options that are noticeably cheaper than those by the Old Town walls:
๐
ฟ๏ธ Car parks in the Port of Gruลพ area — closest to the cruise terminal:
• Price: around 0.80–1.50 euros per hour in open-air lots
• Payment: euro coins or card via machines clearly signposted in Croatian and English
• Features: large surfaced lots right by the ferry and cruise pier
๐
ฟ๏ธ Gruลพ Park-and-Ride — a budget solution for long-term parking:
• Price: around 0.50 euros per hour
• Convenience: buses on lines 1A and 1B run from here straight to Pile Gate
โ ๏ธ Note the fines: in 2026 the fine for an expired or missing ticket in a paid zone is around 50 euros, and for parking on a yellow line or in a residents-only zone up to 100 euros, with possible towing of the vehicle.
๐ก Tip: for long stays (while you are on the cruise) it is best to clarify long-term parking terms in advance — this guarantees you a space and often a better rate.
โฟ Accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility
The Port of Gruลพ is well adapted for people with reduced mobility:
โ
The entire port area and the passenger terminal are wheelchair-accessible
โ
Modern Libertas buses have a low floor and spaces for wheelchairs
โ
Official taxis provide specially equipped vehicles on advance request
โ
Terminal staff assist with boarding — inform your cruise company of any needs in advance
โ
Please note: when a ship berths under the Franjo Tuฤman Bridge, the terminal can be up to 800 metres away — in that case it is best to use the ship's shuttle or a transfer
โฐ When to arrive at the cruise terminal
Most cruise companies open their check-in desks 3–4 hours before the ship departs. The optimal arrival time:
๐ MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises: 3–3.5 hours before departure
๐ Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity: at your assigned check-in time (usually 30-minute windows)
๐ Explora Journeys, Silversea, Seabourn (luxury segment): any time after the terminal opens
โ Boarding deadline: usually 60–90 minutes before departure — arriving late means you will see your ship only from the shore. Every Four Gates Group voucher includes the exact boarding time for your specific cruise.
๐ก Insider tips from the Four Gates Group experts
Over years of working with the Adriatic, our cruise specialists have gathered a set of tips that will save you time, money and nerves:
๐
Fly in a day before the cruise. Dubrovnik Airport is sensitive to weather and has a limited number of flights — a delay or cancellation can cost you the entire cruise, because the ship will not wait. Dubrovnik is well worth spending at least one night before departure.
๐ผ Book your transfer in advance. On peak boarding days the taxi queue at the airport can be long. A pre-booked transfer means a guaranteed price and zero waiting.
๐ There are no trains or metro in Dubrovnik. If anyone offers you a «train to Dubrovnik», it is a mistake — no such service exists. The only ground public transport is the buses.
๐ถ Keep some cash in euros. Croatia has adopted the euro, but for parking machines and Libertas tickets it is handy to have small coins and small notes.
๐ Leave your luggage in storage. If you arrive in the morning but boarding is only in the afternoon, the luggage storage at the main bus station in Gruลพ and at the Platanus office near the cable car will take your bags (from around 5 euros per day).
โณ Play against the crowd. All the excursion groups head into the Old Town between 9:00 and 10:00 in the morning — that is exactly when the city walls and Stradun street become most crowded. If you have a long port call, it is better to go to Lokrum Island first and visit the walls after 3 p.m., when the groups return to their ships.
๐ฑ Download apps in advance: Bolt and Uber (taxi), Google Maps with an offline map of Dubrovnik. This is especially useful in the evening, when public transport runs less often.
๐จ Choose a hotel in the Old Town, Lapad or Babin Kuk area. From there it is 10–20 minutes to the port by taxi or bus, making it easy to plan your programme both before and after the cruise.

Dubrovnik Landmarks and Sights: A Complete Guide for Cruise Travellers
Dubrovnik — a fortress city on the cliffs of the Adriatic that George Bernard Shaw called «paradise on earth». Here you will find 1,940 metres of continuous stone walls, an entire Old Town protected by UNESCO, a thousand-year history of a free maritime republic, and views that drew the film crews of «Game of Thrones» here. For a cruise passenger with 8–12 hours in port, the key is choosing the right route. Below is a tried-and-tested guide to the main landmarks, with up-to-date 2026 prices, opening hours, and precise directions on how to reach each site from the cruise port of Gruลพ. ๐ฏ
๐ฐ 1. Dubrovnik City Walls (Gradske zidine)
๐ก Interesting facts and background:
The City Walls are Dubrovnik's main glory and symbol, the best-preserved fortification system in Europe, which was never taken by storm throughout the entire history of the republic. A walk around the perimeter of the walls is 2 kilometres above the rooftops of the Old Town and the open sea, the city's grandest attraction. โจ
๐น The walls reach up to 25 metres in height and in places are up to 6 metres thick on the landward side.
๐น The full circuit involves 1,190 steps — be ready for climbs and a lack of shade. ๐ฅพ
๐น The system is reinforced by four mighty bastions: the Minฤeta Tower (the highest point), Fort Bokar, Fort of St. John, and the separately located Fort of St. Lawrence (Lovrijenac), nicknamed the «Gibraltar of Dubrovnik».
๐น This is precisely where most of the King's Landing scenes from «Game of Thrones» were filmed. ๐
๐น Walking the walls clockwise takes 1.5–2 hours with photo stops.
๐ History:
The first fortifications on this site were built as early as the 8th century. The walls took their main shape in the 13th–16th centuries, when the free Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) became one of the wealthiest maritime states of the Mediterranean and a rival to Venice.
After the devastating earthquake of 1667 that almost destroyed the city, the Ragusans rebuilt Dubrovnik while preserving the medieval structure of the walls. In 1979, the Old Town together with its fortifications was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. During the siege of the city in 1991–1992, the walls and rooftops suffered serious shelling damage but were carefully restored to UNESCO standards.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Gruลพ:
• Fastest (taxi): 15 minutes, €15–20 (up to €30–35 in summer traffic). Drop-off at the Pile Gate
• City bus: lines 1A, 1B, or 3 from the stop near the Gruลพ terminal to the Pile Gate. €1.73 if bought in advance or €2.50 from the driver, 10–20 min. The main entrance to the walls is right by the Pile Gate
• Cruise line shuttle: often €15 round trip (free on some lines)
๐ถ Price and opening hours:
• Adult ticket (high season, 1 March – 30 November): €40
• Adult ticket (low season, December – February): €20
• Children, students: discounted (with ID)
• Opening hours (2026): in summer roughly from 8:00 until sunset, in winter usually 9:00–15:00 (exact schedule is seasonal)
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: the walls ticket also includes the Fort of St. Lawrence and is valid for 72 hours from the first scan. Buy online at the official site citywallsdubrovnik.hr or at the ticket offices at the entrance (mostly card payment). Avoid the 10:30–15:00 window, when cruise groups arrive.
๐ Tip: comfortable shoes, water, a hat, and sunscreen — there is almost no shade on the walls, and the white limestone reflects the heat.
๐ 2. Mount Srฤ and the Cable Car (Brdo Srฤ / ลฝiฤara)
๐ก Interesting facts and background:
Mount Srฤ, 412 metres high, looms directly over the Old Town and offers the most spectacular panorama of Dubrovnik: red rooftops, the ring of walls, the island of Lokrum, and the boundless Adriatic at your feet. The cable car carries you to the summit in under 4 minutes. ๐
๐น The cable car has operated since 1969 and covers 778 metres of line up to the upper station.
๐น At the summit stands Fort Imperial, built under Napoleon in 1806, now home to the Homeland War Museum about the defence of Dubrovnik in 1991–1992. ๐ฏ๏ธ
๐น Nearby is the Panorama restaurant with a view that is especially striking at sunset. ๐ท
๐น For the daring there is a zipline along the mountainside (book in advance). ๐ช
๐น The most budget-friendly way up is bus No. 17 to the village of Bosanka and a short walk to the summit.
๐ History:
Mount Srฤ has always been Dubrovnik's natural lookout point. In 1806, French troops during the Napoleonic Wars built a stone Imperial Fort here, controlling the approaches to the city.
During the Yugoslav Wars, Srฤ became a key position: a handful of Dubrovnik's defenders held the fort under shelling in 1991–1992, denying the enemy command of the heights above the city. Today the fort is a memorial to those events and one of the most popular viewpoints in Croatia.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Gruลพ:
• Taxi to the lower cable car station: 12–15 min, €12–18. Address: Ulica kralja Petra Krešimira IV
• Bus No. 8 from the Gruลพ bus station stops near the lower cable car station
• On foot from the Old Town: the lower station is a few minutes' walk from the northern side of the walls
๐ถ Price and opening hours:
• Adult, round trip: €30
• Adult, one way: €17
• Children 4–12: €8 round trip, €5 one way
• Opening hours (2026): in summer (April–October) daily roughly 9:00–23:00, in winter a shorter schedule
โ ๏ธ Life hack: you can reach the top even without a cable car ticket — the upper terrace of the station is accessible for viewing the panorama. Buy tickets at the official site dubrovnikcablecar.com or at the lower ticket office (card / cash).
๐ถ 3. Stradun and the Old Town (Stradun / Stari Grad)
๐ก Interesting facts and background:
Stradun is the main street of the Old Town, a limestone boulevard polished by centuries, about 300 metres long, running from the Pile Gate to the Old Port. The entire pedestrian zone of the Old Town is car-free. ๐ซ๐
๐น By the Pile Gate stands the Large Onofrio Fountain (1438) — a domed structure that completed the city's 12-kilometre aqueduct. ๐ง
๐น At the opposite end of Stradun rises Orlando's Column (1418) — a symbol of the republic's freedom; its forearm served as the official unit of measure, the «Dubrovnik cubit» (51.2 cm). ๐
๐น Nearby is the Sponza Palace (16th century), which survived the 1667 earthquake almost intact and now houses the city archives.
๐น On Luลพa Square stands the Church of St. Blaise (Sveti Vlaho) — patron of Dubrovnik, in whose honour a festive procession is held every year on 3 February.
๐น The Pile Gate with its drawbridge is the city's ceremonial entrance, which to this day is symbolically «closed» at night. ๐
๐ History:
Where Stradun now lies there was once a sea channel separating the Roman settlement of Ragusium on the rock from the Slavic settlement of Dubrava on the mainland. In the 12th century the channel was filled in and the two settlements merged into a single city — thus Dubrovnik was born.
The present appearance of Stradun is the result of rebuilding after the catastrophic earthquake of 1667, when the street was lined with uniform houses in a single style with shops on the ground floor. This strict harmony has survived to this day and makes Stradun one of the most beautiful urban ensembles in Europe.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Gruลพ:
• Bus 1A/1B/3: to the Pile Gate (€1.73–2.50), from there a few steps to the start of Stradun
• Taxi: 15 min, €15–20, drop-off at Pile
• On foot along the coast: 30–40 min (hard in the heat)
๐ถ Price:
• Walking along Stradun and the Old Town: free
• Church of St. Blaise: free entry
• Sponza Palace (atrium): free
โ ๏ธ Note: at peak times the Old Town can be crowded, especially when several liners are in port. It is most comfortable to stroll early in the morning or in the evening.
๐๏ธ 4. The Rector's Palace (Kneลพev dvor)
๐ก Interesting facts and background:
The Rector's Palace is the former residence of the head of the Republic of Dubrovnik and its political heart. Today it houses the Cultural History Museum, with authentic interiors, portraits, weapons, coins, and furniture from the Ragusan era. ๐บ
๐น The post of rector was elective and lasted only one month — this is how the republic fought corruption and the usurpation of power.
๐น During his term, the rector effectively lived «locked away» in the palace and was hardly allowed to leave the building. ๐
๐น Above the entrance is the famous inscription «Obliti privatorum, publica curate» («Forget private affairs, take care of public ones»).
๐น The palace combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque — it was rebuilt several times after fires and gunpowder explosions.
๐น The palace atrium has excellent acoustics, so in summer concerts of the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra take place here. ๐ป
๐ History:
The first palace on this site appeared in the Middle Ages, but it was destroyed more than once: first by a gunpowder store explosion in 1435, then another in 1463, and later the earthquake of 1667. Each time the building was restored, adding new architectural elements, which turned it into a true encyclopaedia of styles.
For centuries, the elected rectors of the Republic of Ragusa governed from here — a state that skilfully manoeuvred between Venice, the Ottoman Empire, and the Habsburgs, retaining its independence until the arrival of Napoleon in 1808. Today the palace is part of the Dubrovnik Museums association.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Gruลพ:
• Bus 1A/1B/3 to Pile → walk along Stradun to the eastern end of the Old Town (5–7 min). The palace is next to the cathedral
• Taxi: 15 min, €15–20 to Pile
๐ถ Price and opening hours:
• Adult ticket: €15
• Schoolchildren, students: €8
• Family ticket (up to 2 adults + children under 14): €35
• Combined «10 Museums» ticket: €20 (adults)
• Opening hours (2026): in summer (April–October) daily 9:00–18:00, in winter (November–March) 9:00–16:00, closed on Mondays
โ ๏ธ Life hack: the «10 Museums» ticket at €20 pays off if you plan to visit a couple more museums (Maritime Museum, Ethnographic, etc.). Buy it at dumus.hr.
โช 5. The Franciscan Monastery and Old Pharmacy (Franjevaฤki samostan)
๐ก Interesting facts and background:
The Franciscan Monastery is located right behind the Pile Gate, at the start of Stradun. Its main treasure is one of the oldest working pharmacies in Europe, founded back in 1317. ๐
๐น The «Mala braฤa» pharmacy has operated for over 700 years in a row and still serves the townspeople.
๐น The inner courtyard (cloister) in the Late Romanesque style is adorned with double columns, each with a unique capital. ๐ฟ
๐น The monastery holds a library of over 20,000 volumes, including around 1,200 valuable old manuscripts.
๐น The museum preserves ancient pharmacy instruments, prescription manuscripts, and 14th-century distillation tools.
๐น The monastery was built in 1360 and survived the 1667 earthquake, partly retaining its original structure.
๐ History:
The Franciscan order settled in Dubrovnik as early as the beginning of the 14th century. The monastery complex was built over decades, uniting a church, two cloisters, a library, and a pharmacy.
The 1667 earthquake destroyed a significant part of the buildings, but the Romanesque-Gothic cloister survived and is considered one of the most beautiful in Dalmatia. The pharmacy, however, never ceased operating: at first it served the friars and the sick, and later became public. Today the monastery is at once a working friary, a museum, and a living landmark of European medical history.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Gruลพ:
• Bus 1A/1B/3 to Pile → the monastery is a 1-minute walk, right inside the gate on the left
• Taxi: 15 min, €15–20 to Pile
๐ถ Price and opening hours:
• Entry to the monastery and museum: approximately €6
• Opening hours (2026): in summer roughly 9:00–18:00, in winter roughly 9:00–14:00, open daily
โ ๏ธ Tip: the Franciscan Monastery is included in the Dubrovnik Pass — if you are getting the pass for the walls, visit it too at no extra charge.
โช 6. The Cathedral and Treasury (Katedrala)
๐ก Interesting facts and background:
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque church in the eastern part of the Old Town, next to the Rector's Palace. Its treasury holds one of the richest collections of relics on the Adriatic. โจ
๐น The treasury preserves the relics of St. Blaise — the city's patron, in particular gilded reliquaries with parts of the saint's head, arms, and legs.
๐น According to legend, the first cathedral on this site was funded by King Richard the Lionheart of England in gratitude for his rescue during a storm off Lokrum in 1192. ๐
๐น Among the cathedral's paintings is the altarpiece «The Assumption», attributed to the workshop of Titian. ๐ผ๏ธ
๐น The present Baroque building arose after the 1667 earthquake on the site of an earlier Romanesque cathedral.
๐น During archaeological excavations beneath the cathedral, remains of a 7th-century Byzantine church were found.
๐ History:
Dubrovnik's first cathedral was Romanesque and, according to tradition, partly funded by Richard the Lionheart at the end of the 12th century. That church perished in the 1667 earthquake, which razed most of the city to the ground.
A new cathedral in the Roman Baroque style was built in the late 17th — early 18th century to designs by Italian architects. The cathedral treasury was formed over centuries from donations by wealthy Ragusan families and to this day astonishes with the number of gold and silver reliquaries.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Gruลพ:
• Bus 1A/1B/3 to Pile → walk along Stradun to the eastern end (5–7 min)
• Taxi: 15 min, €15–20 to Pile
๐ถ Price and opening hours:
• Entry to the cathedral: free
• Treasury (Riznica): approximately €5–7
• Opening hours (2026): in summer roughly 9:00–18:00, in winter a shorter schedule, on Sunday mornings — services
โ ๏ธ Dress code: as in a working church, shoulders and knees must be covered.
๐ณ 7. Lokrum Island (Otok Lokrum)
๐ก Interesting facts and background:
Lokrum is a green island nature reserve just 600 metres from the Old Town, the perfect escape from the city heat and crowds. Dense pine and oak forests, rocky bathing spots, a botanical garden, and peacocks roaming freely along the paths. ๐ฆ
๐น On the island are the ruins of an 11th-century Benedictine monastery with an atmospheric cloister. ๐๏ธ
๐น The small saltwater lake «Dead Sea» (Mrtvo more) is connected to the sea and is perfect for swimming, especially with children. ๐
๐น At the summit (96 m) stands the circular Fort Royal of the Napoleonic era with a panorama of Dubrovnik.
๐น According to legend, a monks' curse hangs over the island after they were expelled in the 18th century — which is why staying overnight on Lokrum is forbidden. ๐
๐น The visitor centre displays the original Iron Throne from «Game of Thrones» — some scenes of the series were filmed right here. โ๏ธ
๐ History:
The first Benedictine monks settled on Lokrum around 1023, founding a monastery around which gardens of exotic plants later grew. In the 19th century the island was acquired by Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg (the future Emperor of Mexico), who set up a summer residence here and brought rare subtropical plants.
Today the entire island is a strictly protected nature reserve. Building and overnight stays are forbidden here, which preserves its pristine quiet. It can be reached only by the official boat from the Old Port during the warm season.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Gruลพ:
• First to the Old Port (Stara Luka) — by bus 1A/1B/3 to Pile and on foot through the Old Town, or by taxi
• From the Old Port — the official reserve boat to Portoฤ Cove on Lokrum, the trip is ~15 min, departures every 30 minutes in season
๐ถ Price and opening hours:
• Ticket (boat round trip + island entry), adult: €27–30
• Students: €10
• Children 7–18: €5
• Season: roughly from late March to October, daily (boats do not run in bad weather or in winter)
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: be sure to catch the last return boat — there are no hotels on the island and staying overnight is forbidden. Check the schedule on site at the Old Port ticket office or at lokrum.hr.
๐ธ 8. On the Trail of «Game of Thrones»
๐ก Interesting facts and background:
Dubrovnik became the on-screen King's Landing — the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. Fans of the series recognise dozens of locations simply by strolling through the Old Town. ๐
๐น The Jesuit Stairs (Skalinada) by the Church of St. Ignatius is the site of the famous «walk of atonement» scene of Queen Cersei. ๐
๐น Fort Lovrijenac «played» the Red Keep and the tournament arena.
๐น The Old Port and Fort Bokar were the harbour and sea walls of King's Landing.
๐น On the island of Lokrum the palace in the city of Qarth was filmed, and the visitor centre holds a replica (and once the original) of the Iron Throne. โ๏ธ
๐น The many alleys of the Old Town became the backdrop for the market and street scenes of the series.
๐ Context:
The HBO film crew chose Dubrovnik from the second season of «Game of Thrones» (2011) and returned here for years. The city's preserved medieval ensemble required almost no sets — the walls, narrow alleys, and stone stairs looked like a fantasy capital all on their own.
Thanks to the series, Dubrovnik experienced a genuine tourist boom, and «geo-tours» along the trails of King's Landing became a distinct type of local excursion.
๐ข How to get there from the port of Gruลพ:
• Bus 1A/1B/3 to Pile → all key locations are within walking distance in the Old Town
• Taxi: 15 min, €15–20 to Pile
๐ถ Price:
• Self-guided walk of the locations: free (except entry to the walls, forts, and Lokrum)
• Themed guided tour: usually from €25–40 per person, lasting 1.5–2 hours
โ ๏ธ Tip: the Jesuit Stairs and the Old Port are free; you only pay for entry to the walls and Fort Lovrijenac (included in the single walls ticket).
๐จ 9. Other sights worth your attention
• โช The Dominican Monastery — a 14th-century Gothic complex in the eastern part of the Old Town with a beautiful cloister and a collection of Dubrovnik painting. Entry ~€5.

โ ๏ธ Important things to know before heading into the city
๐ The «all aboard» rule: you must return to the liner 60 minutes before departure. If you are late, the liner will not wait, and catching up with it at the next port will be at your own expense.
๐ชช Documents: take a photocopy of your passport + your Ship Card.
๐ถ Cash: Croatia is in the euro zone, so keep €50–100 in cash for small expenses (toilets, the bus, the market).
๐ Clothing: comfortable shoes — the Old Town is all stone stairs and cobbled alleys. For churches — covered shoulders and knees.
๐ฑ Internet: there are free Wi-Fi spots in the Old Town. For navigation, download an offline Google Maps map.
๐ Safety: Dubrovnik is one of the safest cities in Europe with a very low crime rate. Still, keep your valuables under control in the crowd.
โ๏ธ Sun protection: in summer the temperature reaches +33 °C, and there is almost no shade on the walls and Mount Srฤ. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and water are a must.
๐ข Several liners: at peak season up to 10 ships may be in port at once, which can leave the Old Town overcrowded. Head into the city as early as possible.
