Cruises from Bari
Bari — the ancient capital of Apulia and the rising star of the cruise Mediterranean. Set on the heel of the Italian boot, along the azure shore of the Adriatic, this city immerses every traveller in the essence of authentic Southern Italy. Here, a thousand-year-old Byzantine and Norman heritage entwines with the scent of freshly baked focaccia, medieval alleys of the Old Town sit side by side with modern cruise terminals, and a morning stroll along the Lungomare promenade can seamlessly turn into a dinner framed by the most beautiful port skyline on the Adriatic.
For the cruise traveller, Bari is far more than a port of call on a timetable. It is a rapidly growing home port and one of the Adriatic's key maritime cities, from which liners set sail for Eastern Mediterranean itineraries, to Greece, Croatia and Montenegro. In 2024, the Port of Bari welcomed 462,726 cruise passengers across 165 ship calls, and in 2025 that figure surged to 550,817 — a 19% increase. The number of passengers embarking in Bari as a home port grew even faster: by 32.7% compared with 2024. ๐ข

๐๏ธ History of Bari — from the ancient Peucetians to the Adriatic's cruise hub
โณ Three millennia of maritime destiny
The history of Bari reaches back far beyond the common era: a settlement existed here as early as the Bronze Age, around 1500 BC. The indigenous people were the Peucetians — an Illyrian tribe inhabiting central and western Apulia. The Greeks arrived later, bringing active maritime trade with them. Under Roman rule the city was named Barium and became an important port, with its harbour documented as early as 180 BC. Bari lay on the route connecting the coastal road to the Via Traiana — one of the main arteries of the Apennine Peninsula.
After the fall of Rome, the city changed hands repeatedly: Goths, Lombards, Byzantines, Saracens. In the ninth century Bari even became a small independent Muslim state. Its true flowering came under Byzantium, however: the city became the seat of the catepan — the highest representative of Constantinople in Southern Italy — and the greatest commercial and cultural centre of the region.
โ๏ธ Normans, Crusaders and Frederick II — medieval glory
In 1071 Bari was seized by the Normans under Robert Guiscard and absorbed into the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. Shortly afterwards an event occurred that would shape the city's spiritual character for a thousand years: in 1087 the relics of Saint Nicholas of Myra were brought to Bari, making it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the Christian world, venerated by both Catholics and Orthodox faithful alike. In 1096 Peter the Hermit preached the First Crusade in Bari, and thousands of knights put to sea from this very port. In the thirteenth century Bari experienced a new age of greatness: Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II chose the city as his residence and rebuilt the Swabian Castle — Castello Svevo — one of the most magnificent fortresses in Apulia. The city later passed under the rule of the Angevins, the Aragonese and the House of Sforza: Bona Sforza, the last Duchess of Bari, transformed the castle into a Renaissance palace and eventually became... Queen of Poland, consort of Sigismund I.
โ Port of Bari — the Adriatic gateway to Apulia
๐ Scale and structure of the port
The modern Porto di Bari is a large, multi-purpose port complex and the second-busiest cargo port in Southern Italy. The port zone comprises several sectors: the Old Port (Porto Vecchio) with its fishing harbour, a commercial sector handling freight and ferry services (routes to Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania), and the cruise terminal — Darsena di Ponente (the western basin) and the Tatarella Brothers Quay, where the majority of cruise liners berth. Vessels longer than 290 metres have a dedicated berthing zone. In 2025–2026 a new, purpose-built cruise terminal of 3,000 m² is under active construction, applying green building (eco-edilizia) standards. The project cost is approximately EUR 8 million. It will replace the current temporary structures and become a flexible multipurpose space capable of rapid transformation for conferences and cultural events. โจ
๐ค MSC Cruises concession — a new era of management
In June 2025, the Southern Adriatic Port System Authority (AdSPMAM) signed a ten-year concession with MSC Cruises for the management of cruise terminals in the ports of Bari and Brindisi through the subsidiary company "Bari-Brindisi Cruise Terminal". The concession covers terminal facilities, service areas and car parks; operational quays remain in public use. MSC has committed to investing at least EUR 2.2 million and to growing the number of ship calls: up to 232 port calls per year in Bari by 2030, and 254 by 2034.
๐ข Which cruise lines operate from Bari
The port of Bari is served by liners from the world's leading cruise brands: MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises, TUI Cruises, Celestyal Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises, Silversea and many others. The port is a key departure point for Eastern Mediterranean cruises — to Greece, Montenegro, the Black Sea and the Middle East. ๐
๐ก Fascinating facts about Bari and its port
A few lesser-known details will make your visit to this city all the more rewarding:
๐
Bari is the official home of Santa Claus. The Basilica of Saint Nicholas houses the relics of Saint Nicholas of Myra — the very saint whose legend gave rise to the figure of Santa Claus. Every year thousands of pilgrims from around the world — both Catholic and Orthodox — come to venerate them. The basilica is one of the few churches in the world where both denominations hold regular services.
๐ The queen who linked Bari with Poland. Bona Sforza, the last Duchess of Bari (1503–1557), married King Sigismund I of Poland and became one of the most influential queens in Polish history. She brought Renaissance culture, culinary habits (the Polish word for soup vegetables, "wลoszczyzna", literally means "Italian greens") and enormous diplomatic influence to Poland.
๐๏ธ Italy's longest promenade. The Lungomare Nazario Sauro in Bari stretches along the Adriatic for nearly 4 kilometres — the longest pedestrian seafront promenade on the entire Apennine Peninsula.
๐ The street of living pasta. In the narrow lanes of Bari Vecchia you can watch local grandmothers hand-shaping orecchiette — Apulia's signature ear-shaped pasta — right on their own doorsteps. This tradition has endured for centuries and shows no signs of fading.
๐ญ Italy's fourth-largest theatre. The Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari is one of the country's largest and most prestigious opera houses. Devastated by fire in 1991, it was fully restored and reopened in 2009.
โช The port from which the Crusaders sailed. In 1096, Peter the Hermit proclaimed the First Crusade in Bari, and thousands of knights set out to sea from this port. The Adriatic held its silence: through Bari lay the road to Jerusalem.
๐ An open-air fish market. Every morning the port of Bari hosts a spontaneous fish auction right on the quayside — fishermen sell their fresh catch directly to buyers, exactly as their ancestors did hundreds of years ago.
๐ A city of two faces. Bari is sharply divided into two distinct parts: medieval Bari Vecchia — a chaotic labyrinth of narrow streets on the peninsula between the two harbours — and the "new" nineteenth-century Murattiano district with straight, grid-planned streets lined by neoclassical and Liberty-style (Italian Art Nouveau) buildings.
๐ Top sights in Bari — must-see for the cruise traveller
A cruise ship's stay in Bari typically lasts between 8 and 12 hours, depending on the itinerary. That is enough time to cover the entire Old Town, visit the basilica, sample local street food and even venture out to one of the region's nearby destinations.
โช Basilica of Saint Nicholas (Basilica di San Nicola) — Bari's foremost landmark and one of Europe's most significant Romanesque pilgrimage sites. Built between 1087 and 1197 over a crypt housing the relics of Saint Nicholas; simultaneously a Catholic and an Orthodox church. Free entry.
๐ฐ Swabian Castle (Castello Svevo / Castello Normanno-Svevo) — a formidable fortress begun by the Normans in 1131 and comprehensively rebuilt by Frederick II between 1233 and 1240. The castle houses a museum with a collection of Apulian-Norman sculpture. Located in the very heart of the Old Town.
โฉ๏ธ Cathedral of Saint Sabinus (Cattedrale di San Sabino) — a superb example of Apulian Romanesque from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, erected after the previous cathedral was razed by William the Bad in 1156. It impresses with its monumental white limestone façade, rose window and three naves stripped of their later Baroque additions.
๐ Old Town (Bari Vecchia) — a medieval labyrinth of narrow streets on the promontory between the old and new harbours. Authentic fishing districts, tiny churches, markets and above all living traditions are preserved here: grandmothers hand-shaping orecchiette right on the doorstep.
๐ Lungomare Nazario Sauro promenade — Italy's longest pedestrian seafront (approximately 4 km) along the Adriatic. The perfect setting for a morning or evening walk with views of the sea and the port.
๐ญ Teatro Petruzzelli — Italy's fourth-largest opera house, restored after the 1991 fire. Even without a performance, the theatre's façade is an architectural jewel of the city.
๐บ Archaeological Museum of Santa Scolastica (Museo Archeologico di Santa Scolastica) — set within the ancient city walls of Bari; the route traces layers from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages: Greek and Peucetian burial sites, a second-century Roman road, and mosaics from a fifth-century early Christian basilica.
๐๏ธ Alberobello — a fairytale town 49 km from the port, the "Capital of the Trulli": around 1,500 cone-roofed, mortarless dry-stone structures inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Reachable by train or transfer in approximately 1.5 hours.
๐ชจ Matera — the cave city of the Sassi (Sassi di Matera), approximately 90 km from Bari, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; filming location for Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ and the James Bond film No Time to Die; "European Capital of Culture 2019". Recommended for passengers with a longer port stay (10+ hours).
โจ Why choose a cruise from Bari
Bari is that rare port combining seamless logistics, authentic atmosphere and a uniquely rich regional context.
First, a convenient airport: Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport (BRI), just 15 minutes from the port, handles flights from dozens of European cities, including major low-cost carriers (Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet). โ๏ธ
Second, the atmosphere of authentic Southern Italy: unlike tourist-polished megacities, Bari preserves a vibrant Mediterranean genuineness — no theme-park veneer, just real people, traditional food and stone worn smooth by three thousand years. ๐
Third, Apulia as a region is a discovery in its own right: the trulli of Alberobello, the caves of Matera, the Grotte di Castellana, the coastal gem of Polignano a Mare — each of these destinations merits a journey of its own, and all of them are reachable from Bari in a single day. ๐

How to Get to the Cruise Terminal in Bari
Bari is the capital of the Puglia region in southern Italy and one of the Adriatic's most important cruise ports. Situated on the very "heel" of the Italian "boot", the city welcomes hundreds of thousands of passengers every year onto the ships of MSC, Costa, Royal Caribbean, AIDA, and many other lines. The cruise terminal sits right next to the historic city centre, making embarkation exceptionally convenient — though a few logistical details are worth knowing in advance. Below you will find a tried-and-tested step-by-step guide covering every transfer option, up-to-date prices, and expert tips from the Four Gates Group cruise team. ๐ฏ
๐ Where Exactly Is the Bari Cruise Port
The Port of Bari is a large multipurpose complex on the Adriatic coast, divided into the Old Port and the New Port. All cruise ships and passenger ferries berth in the New Port, where the modern cruise terminal is located.
โ New Terminal at Banchina 10 (Nuovo Terminal Crociere) — Bari's main cruise hub, opened for the 2025 season. It is a state-of-the-art building of approximately 3,000 sq m on the Banchina 10 quay, constructed to green-building standards. The terminal features check-in desks, waiting areas, vending machines, and a souvenir shop.
๐ GPS address: Corso Antonio De Tullio, 1, 70123 Bari BA, Italy
โ Terminal phone: +39 345 532 6420
โ Molo San Vito Berth — an additional berth for large vessels over 280 m in length that cannot fit alongside the main terminal. It is a 5-minute drive from the main terminal building.
๐ GPS address: Molo San Vito, 70123 Bari BA, Italy
๐ถ Distance to the city centre: approximately 2–2.5 km to Piazza Aldo Moro (the central railway station), roughly 20–25 minutes on foot along the waterfront.
โ Important: the exact berth and terminal are always specified in your cruise voucher. Check them 48–72 hours before boarding — companies occasionally reassign berths depending on port traffic.
โ๏ธ From Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport (BRI) to the Cruise Terminal
Bari Karol Wojtyla International Airport is located 12–14 km from the cruise port, in the Palese district on the city's north-west side. All international flights arrive here, including connections from Ukraine (via Warsaw, Istanbul, Vienna, Kraków, Varna, and other hubs). The journey takes anywhere from 25 minutes (by taxi) to 1 hour 20 minutes (by public transport with a transfer).
๐ Taxi — the fastest and most convenient option
Official Bari taxis are typically white or yellow with a roof sign and an identification number on the driver's door. The taxi rank is located right outside the arrivals exit.
• Journey time: 25–30 minutes (depending on traffic)
• Approximate fare to the port (as of 2025–2026): around 20–30 EUR (metered fare + surcharges; an airport supplement is standard)
• Payment: predominantly cash; not all taxis accept card payments — it is best to carry cash
• Apps: Free Now and inDriver are available in Bari; Uber has limited coverage
๐ก Four Gates tip: as soon as you get in, give the driver the full terminal address — Corso Antonio De Tullio, 1 — or specify you need the «Terminal Crociere». Avoid unlicensed drivers who may offer "cheap" deals directly inside the arrivals hall.
๐ Private transfer — the most comfortable option
If you are travelling with family, a group, or heavy luggage, this is the ideal choice. Your driver will meet you in the arrivals hall with a name board, help with luggage, track your flight, and take you directly to the terminal at a fixed price.
• Price: from 45–55 EUR for a saloon car (1–3 passengers), from 70–90 EUR for a minivan (4–8 passengers)
• Journey time: 25–30 minutes
• Benefits: fixed price, flight monitoring, zero waiting time
๐ค Four Gates Group arranges private transfers for its clients — simply provide your flight number when booking your cruise.
๐ Bus to the city centre + taxi/bus to the port — the budget option
Bari Airport has no direct bus to the cruise terminal, so a transfer is required. The most convenient routes:
Option A — Tempesta Shuttle Bus:
1๏ธโฃ Tempesta shuttle (stop right outside the terminal exit, marked «Shuttle Bus»)
2๏ธโฃ To Piazza Aldo Moro — approximately 30 minutes
3๏ธโฃ Taxi or AMTAB bus No. 20 to the cruise terminal — a further 10–15 minutes
Tempesta fare: 4–5 EUR one way (ticket from the driver or online)
Option B — AMTAB Bus No. 16:
1๏ธโฃ AMTAB line 16 from the airport — the cheapest option
2๏ธโฃ To Bari Centrale station (Piazza Moro) — 40–60 minutes
3๏ธโฃ Taxi or AMTAB bus No. 20 to the port
AMTAB fare: 1–1.50 EUR per ticket
Total journey time: 1 hour 10 minutes — 1 hour 30 minutes
โ ๏ธ Important: AMTAB No. 16 runs from 05:10 to 21:35 (on weekdays). If your flight arrives late in the evening, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the only practical way to reach the port.
๐ Train FM1/FM2 + taxi/bus — an economical option
The airport is connected to the city centre by the metropolitan rail network (FM1 and FM2 lines).
1๏ธโฃ FM1 or FM2 from the airport to Bari Centrale station — 20–30 minutes, approximately 5 EUR
2๏ธโฃ From Bari Centrale, taxi or AMTAB bus to the cruise terminal — a further 10–15 minutes
Total fare: approximately 7–8 EUR + taxi
Journey time: approximately 1 hour
๐ From Bari Centrale Railway Station to the Cruise Terminal
If you are arriving in Bari by train (Trenitalia high-speed services from Rome, Milan, or Naples, or regional trains from other cities in Puglia and Calabria), you will arrive at the city's main station — Bari Centrale (Piazza Aldo Moro). It is located approximately 2 km from the cruise terminal.
๐ Taxi: 10–15 minutes, 10–20 EUR (depending on the berth and traffic)
๐ AMTAB bus: line No. 20 or No. 50 from the station to the «Porto fronte» stop — 9–15 minutes, approximately 1.50 EUR per ticket. Departures every 15–30 minutes.
๐ถ On foot: approximately 25–30 minutes along Corso Antonio De Tullio and the waterfront — feasible without heavy luggage
๐ก Tip: if you have a lot of luggage and limited time, a taxi from Bari Centrale is the fastest and most comfortable solution — and considerably cheaper than an airport transfer.
๐๏ธ From Bari City Centre to the Cruise Terminal
If you have spent the night or a few days at a hotel in the city centre, you have several convenient ways to reach your ship:
๐ Taxi from your hotel — 10–20 EUR depending on the neighbourhood. Fast (10–20 min), convenient with luggage. Taxis are easy to hail on the street or book via the Free Now app.
๐ AMTAB city bus — lines No. 20 or No. 50 stop at the port entrance on Corso Antonio De Tullio:
• Fare: 1–1.50 EUR one way
• Frequency: every 15–30 minutes
• Operating hours: 05:00–22:00
• Journey time: 10–20 minutes from the city centre
• Tickets: available at newsagents, tobacconists, or via the MUVT app
๐ถ On foot from Bari Vecchia (Old Town) — a perfectly viable option if you are staying in the Borgo Antico area or along the waterfront:
• Distance: approximately 1.5–2 km from the Old Town
• Time: 20–25 minutes along the scenic Lungomare promenade
• The route follows the coastal boulevard — a pleasant walk in mild weather
• Not recommended in the heat or with heavy luggage
๐ด Electric scooters: rental e-scooters (e.g. Bird) are available in Bari, but entry into the port area is prohibited for them. You can ride to the port gates and continue on foot.
๐ By Private or Hire Car — Parking near the Port
If you are arriving at the port by private or rental car, several parking options are available nearby:
๐
ฟ๏ธ Parking & Tour (recommended by MSC Cruises) — the most convenient option right at the terminal:
• Address: directly at the cruise terminal
• Price: approximately 70 EUR for 7 days (MSC), 70 EUR for 7 days (Costa) — when booked online
• Booking: parkingtour.it; tel. +39 339 482 0003
• Features: 24-hour security, CCTV, walking distance to the gangway
๐
ฟ๏ธ ParkingMyCar / ParkVia (off-site parking with shuttle):
• Location: 3–5 km from the terminal
• Price: from 10–15 EUR per day, from 60–70 EUR per week
• Service: free shuttle to and from the terminal (~10–20 minutes)
• Booking: recommended online in advance via parkingmycar.it or parkvia.com
๐
ฟ๏ธ Corso Vittorio Veneto car park (Port of Bari) — waterfront parking for a brief stop (passenger drop-off):
• Address: Corso Vittorio Veneto, Bari
• Suitable for dropping off passengers rather than long-term car storage
๐ก Tip: it is best to book a parking space near the terminal online at least 48 hours in advance — this guarantees your spot and often secures a better rate.
๐ฃ๏ธ GPS route: whichever direction you approach Bari from, the most convenient option is the A14 «Autostrada Adriatica» motorway, then exit onto the Tangenziale di Bari (ring road) towards «Porto» or «Centro».
โฟ Accessibility for Passengers with Reduced Mobility
The Port of Bari and the surrounding transport infrastructure are adapted for passengers with reduced mobility:
โ
The new terminal is equipped with lifts, ramps, and wide corridors for wheelchair users
โ
AMTAB buses feature a low floor and a boarding ramp for wheelchairs
โ
The Tempesta shuttle makes request stops at more accessible points along the route
โ
Official Bari taxis can provide adapted vehicles on request — book in advance through local taxi services (Apulia Taxi: +39 080 534 6666)
โ
Terminal staff provide assistance during boarding — inform your cruise company of any special requirements in advance
โฐ When to Arrive at the Cruise Terminal
Most cruise lines open check-in desks 3–4 hours before the ship's departure. Recommended arrival times:
๐ MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises: 3–3.5 hours before departure
๐ Royal Caribbean, AIDA, TUI Cruises: at your assigned check-in time (typically 30-minute windows)
๐ Silversea, Celestyal, Explora Journeys (luxury segment): any time after the terminal opens
โ Boarding deadline: generally 60–90 minutes before departure — arriving late means watching the ship leave from the quay. All Four Gates Group vouchers include the exact boarding time for your specific cruise.
๐ก Expert Tips from the Four Gates Group Team
Over years of working with Bari, our cruise specialists have compiled a set of tried-and-tested tips to save you time, money, and stress:
๐
Arrive the day before your cruise. Any flight delay or unexpected situation on the road could cost you the entire cruise — the ship will not wait. Besides, Bari is a wonderful city in its own right: the ancient Bari Vecchia, the Basilica of St Nicholas, and fresh orecchiette pasta made in the open air are well worth an extra night.
๐ผ Book your transfer in advance. On peak embarkation days, taxi queues at the airport can stretch to 30–40 minutes. A pre-booked transfer means a guaranteed price, a driver holding your name board, and zero waiting time.
๐ถ Carry cash. Not all Bari taxis are equipped with card payment terminals. It is advisable to keep 30–50 EUR in small denominations on hand for your first moments after landing.
๐ Leave luggage at your hotel or the station before boarding. If you arrive in the morning but your ship boards in the afternoon, most Bari hotels will store suitcases free of charge even after check-out. Bari Centrale station also has left-luggage lockers (hours: 07:00–23:00).
๐ซ Do not attempt to walk to the terminal with heavy luggage. Although the distance from the Old Town is not great, part of the route passes through the port's industrial zone — there are no pavements and heavy goods vehicles are frequent.
๐ฑ Download useful apps in advance: Free Now (taxis), MUVT (AMTAB tickets), Google Maps with an offline map of Bari and Puglia, Google Translate with the Italian language pack — not all port staff speak English.
โ Do not rush to the terminal too early. The new Bari terminal does not yet offer a well-developed waiting area with cafés and comfortable lounges. Better to use the time for a stroll along the seafront or a coffee in Bari Vecchia — it is only 15 minutes on foot.
๐จ Choose a hotel in the Borgo Antico area or the city centre. From there, the port is 10–15 minutes by taxi or 25 minutes on foot along the scenic waterfront — convenient both before and after your cruise.

Bari Sights & Attractions: Complete Guide for Cruise Passengers
Bari — the capital of the Puglia region in southern Italy and one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast. Here you will find over 2,000 years of uninterrupted history, a medieval labyrinth of the Old Town, one of the most significant pilgrimage basilicas in Europe, a magnificent seafront promenade and the finest street food in Southern Italy. For a cruise passenger with 8–10 hours ashore, the key is choosing the right itinerary. Below is a tried-and-tested guide to the main attractions with current 2026 prices, opening hours and precise directions from the cruise terminal Stazione Marittima to every sight. ๐ฏ
โช 1. Basilica of Saint Nicholas (Basilica di San Nicola)
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
The Basilica of Saint Nicholas is the most important landmark in Bari and one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in both the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches. This is where the relics of Saint Nicholas of Myra — the prototype of modern Santa Claus — are kept. Thousands of Orthodox pilgrims from Eastern Europe and Ukraine travel here every year to venerate the saint. โจ
๐น Construction of the basilica began in 1087 — immediately after sailors from Bari removed the saint's relics from Myra in Lycia (present-day Turkey). The building was completed in 1197.
๐น The basilica features a unique two-level layout: the upper church for services and a lower crypt housing the sarcophagus with the relics.
๐น Every year on 6 December, Saint Nicholas Day, a special rite is performed in the crypt: a flask is lowered into the tomb to collect the "manna" — a liquid which, according to tradition, seeps from the saint's relics and is believed to have healing properties.
๐น The architectural style is the benchmark of Apulian Romanesque architecture: a severe façade with three portals, carved columns resting on the backs of bulls and lions, and a magnificent central ciborium above the altar.
๐น The basilica is a symbol of the union between East and West: it contains an Orthodox chapel where services for Eastern European pilgrims are held regularly. ๐๏ธ
๐ History:
In 1087, sixty-two sailors from Bari arrived in Myra and removed the saint's relics to save them from the Seljuk Turks. Returning home as heroes, they laid the foundations of the basilica before the first year was out. Pope Urban II personally consecrated the crypt in 1089, and Pope Paschal II consecrated the upper church in 1197.
Over the centuries the basilica became a major centre of pilgrimage, drawing not only Catholics but also Orthodox Christians. This acquired an official dimension after 1953, when the Vatican permitted Orthodox pilgrims to celebrate liturgies in the crypt. Today the Basilica di San Nicola is a unique place of ecumenical encounter between two branches of Christianity.
๐ข Getting There from Stazione Marittima:
• On foot (best option): 15–20 minutes along the seafront via Piazza del Ferrarese. Address: Largo Abate Elia 13
• Taxi: 5–8 minutes, EUR 8–12
• Bus No. 50 (Circolare Porto): alight at "S. Chiara Fronte" (2 stops from the port), EUR 1.00
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
• Basilica entrance (upper church): free
• Crypt with relics: free
• Opening hours: daily 7:30–20:00, Sunday until 18:00
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: dress code is compulsory — shoulders and knees must be covered. Photography in the crypt is allowed, but without flash and respectfully. Avoid visiting during services (mainly in the morning and evening).
๐ฐ 2. Norman-Swabian Castle (Castello Normanno-Svevo)
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
The castle stands on the seafront at the edge of the Old Town and is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in Bari. Its massive towers, moat and stone bridge create the impression of a true medieval fortress — which is precisely what it is.
๐น The castle was built by Norman King Roger II around 1132, on top of the remains of an earlier fortification.
๐น Between 1233 and 1240 the castle was almost entirely rebuilt by Emperor Frederick II Hohenstaufen — one of the most remarkable rulers of the Middle Ages. The castle acquired its present form during this period.
๐น In the 16th century, under Spanish rule, Queen Bona Sforza — the Polish queen and wife of Sigismund I — settled here and spent the last years of her life in Bari. Her chambers have been partially preserved. ๐
๐น Remains of the moat are still visible around the castle. The tower observation platforms offer a panoramic view of the port and the Adriatic.
๐น Admission to the castle on the first Sunday of every month is free for all visitors.
๐ History:
The castle was twice destroyed by the people of Bari themselves — in protest against Norman tyranny. Frederick II rebuilt it from scratch and turned it into a strategic stronghold of his Apulian domain. During the Aragonese dynasty (15th–16th centuries) the castle was extended with bastions and a moat. After Italian unification it served as a prison, then as barracks. Today the castle is state property and is open to visitors as a museum with themed exhibitions on medieval Puglia.
๐ข Getting There from Stazione Marittima:
• On foot: 15–20 minutes. Address: Piazza Federico II di Svevia 4
• Taxi: 7–10 minutes, EUR 8–12
• Bus No. 50: stop "Massari (B)", EUR 1.00
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:

• Children under 18 and visitors with disabilities: free
• First Sunday of the month: free for everyone
• Opening hours: daily 9:00–18:00
โ ๏ธ Tip: the castle and the basilica are just 5 minutes' walk from each other — ideal to visit both in a single outing.
๐๏ธ 3. The Old Town — Bari Vecchia
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
Bari Vecchia is a medieval labyrinth on a small promontory between two harbours. It is the most authentic and atmospheric part of the city, where time seems to have stood still. Alleyways barely 1–2 metres wide, steps carved into the stone, balconies hung with drying laundry and the smell of freshly baked focaccia. ๐งบ
๐น Orecchiette Street (Via dell'Arco Basso) — the legendary "pasta ladies' alley": local women sit on doorsteps and hand-shape orecchiette ("little ears") right in front of passers-by. This tradition has been passed down through generations. ๐ต
๐น Piazza Mercantile — the heart of medieval 14th-century Bari, with the Column of Justice to which debtors were once tied. Today it is home to some of the finest open-air restaurants in Bari. โ
๐น Piazza del Ferrarese — the main "gateway" to the Old Town from the seafront side, and the favourite spot for the evening strolls of Bari residents.
๐น The Old Town is built almost entirely of local limestone — "tufo", which gives the district its characteristic creamy-white colour that shimmers in the sunlight.
๐น Bari Vecchia has around 40 active churches, most of which are open to visitors free of charge. ๐
๐ History:
Bari was founded by the Illyrians before the Common Era, and by the 1st century AD it had become a flourishing Roman colony. After the fall of Rome, Bari weathered the Visigoths, Lombards, Byzantines and a brief period of Arab rule. In 1071 the Normans seized the city, and it was they who gave Bari Vecchia its definitive character — a densely built promontory with a castle at one end and a basilica at the other.
The medieval street plan of the Old Town has remained virtually unchanged: the tangle of alleyways was designed to confuse any invader. Today that same labyrinth enchants visitors from all over the world.
๐ข Getting There from Stazione Marittima:
• On foot: 15–20 minutes — the most convenient option. Route: from the port along the seafront to Piazza del Ferrarese — the entrance to the Old Town is right there
• Taxi: 7 minutes, EUR 8–10
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
• Walking through Bari Vecchia: free (it is simply a city neighbourhood)
• Guided walking tour: from EUR 20–30 per person (group tours daily at 10:00 and 16:00)
• Self-guided exploration: around the clock. Best times — before 11:00 or after 17:00, when there are fewer tourists
โช 4. Cathedral of Saint Sabinus (Cattedrale di San Sabino)
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
The Cathedral of Bari is less well known to tourists than the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, but it is no less impressive. It is older than the basilica, and its underground museum conceals one of the city's most unexpected attractions.
๐น The cathedral was built between 1035 and 1171 in Romanesque style, on the site of an earlier 7th-century Byzantine church.
๐น Excavations beneath the cathedral revealed the remains of three different churches, one on top of another, from the 4th to the 11th century. This is a unique "stratigraphy" of religious architecture. ๐บ
๐น The crypt contains the icon of the Hodegitria — one of Bari's most venerated relics, which according to tradition was painted by the Evangelist Luke himself. Every May the icon is solemnly carried through the streets of the city during the Great Procession.
๐น The cathedral façade is adorned with bas-reliefs of animals and fantastical creatures — a characteristic feature of Apulian Romanesque art.
๐น Beneath the main nave lies the underground museum "Succorpo" with remains of earlier churches and mosaic floors. ๐บ
๐ History:
The first church on this site appeared in the early Christian era. In 1156 the Norman king William the Bad (Re Guglielmo il Malo) destroyed the city and burned the cathedral. Rebuilt at the end of the 12th century, it acquired its present Romanesque appearance. Following the Council of Trent and Baroque transformations in the 17th–18th centuries the interior was updated, but the external Romanesque façade has survived almost unchanged.
๐ข Getting There from Stazione Marittima:
• On foot: 15–20 minutes through Bari Vecchia. Address: Piazza dell'Odegitria
• Taxi: 8 minutes, EUR 8–10
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
• Cathedral entrance: free
• Underground museum "Succorpo": EUR 3–5 (confirm on site)
• Opening hours: daily 8:00–12:30 and 16:00–19:30
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: dress code is compulsory. The cathedral and the Basilica of Saint Nicholas are just 3–4 minutes' walk apart — convenient to visit both in one go.
๐ 5. The Seafront Promenade — Lungomare (Lungomare Nazario Sauro)
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
The Lungomare is one of the finest seaside promenades in Southern Italy. The wide boulevard stretches for several kilometres along the Adriatic from the Old Port to modern beaches, and is the main venue for the evening passeggiata — the traditional stroll of Bari residents.
๐น From here you enjoy panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the silhouette of the Old Town — one of Bari's finest photography spots. ๐ธ
๐น The promenade is home to the Pinacoteca Metropolitana "Corrado Giaquinto" — Puglia's largest art museum, with works by Giovanni Bellini, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese and outstanding Apulian masters.
๐น The Grand Hotel delle Nazioni stands on the Lungomare — an early 20th-century architectural landmark with a neoclassical façade.
๐น Early in the morning the promenade is filled with local residents — cyclists, joggers and Nordic walkers. This is the atmosphere of a living city, not a tourist showcase. ๐ด
๐น Along the boulevard there is a string of restaurants serving fresh seafood — the perfect place for lunch with a sea view. ๐ฆ
๐ History:
The promenade was laid out in the second half of the 19th century at the initiative of the city authorities — at a time when Bari was modernising rapidly, following the example of major European cities. The new part of Bari (the Murat quarter), planned in 1813 at the behest of French Marshal Joachim Murat, who then ruled the Kingdom of Naples, is laid out on a strict rectangular grid — in contrast to the chaotic Old Town. The Lungomare became the natural extension of this ordered new Bari and its main "living room".
๐ข Getting There from Stazione Marittima:
• On foot: 10–15 minutes along the shoreline — the promenade begins immediately beyond the port area
• Taxi: 5–7 minutes, EUR 6–8
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:
• Walk along the promenade: free, 24 hours
• Pinacoteca Metropolitana "Corrado Giaquinto": EUR 3–5; Tue–Sun 9:00–19:00, Mon closed. Address: Lungomare Nazario Sauro 27, 4th floor
โ ๏ธ Tip: the best time for a stroll is early morning (before 9:00) or evening after 18:00, when residents head out for their passeggiata.
๐ญ 6. Teatro Petruzzelli
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
Teatro Petruzzelli is the fourth largest theatre in Italy and a symbol of Bari's cultural life. Its lavish neoclassical façade and auditorium with gilded stucco and red velvet leave a lasting impression. ๐ผ
๐น The theatre opened in 1903 and immediately became the pinnacle of cultural prestige for the whole of Southern Italy.
๐น In 1991 the theatre was set on fire by unknown arsonists. The blaze destroyed most of the interior — one of the greatest cultural tragedies in Bari's modern history. ๐ฅ
๐น Restored and reopened in 2009 with a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The restoration took 18 years and cost over EUR 100 million.
๐น The auditorium seats more than 1,500 people. The programme includes operas, ballets, symphony concerts and international theatrical productions.
๐น Backstage tours are available — a chance to see the unique theatre workshops and learn about the building's tragic and triumphant history. ๐ญ
๐ History:
The theatre was built by brothers Onofrio and Angelo Petruzzelli — Bari entrepreneurs who invested the entire family fortune in the project. The interior frescoes were painted by the renowned artist Raffaele Armenise. After the fire of 1991 the criminal investigation dragged on for years. The restoration of the theatre became a matter of honour for the whole city — the people of Bari were united by a shared determination to reclaim their cultural landmark.
๐ข Getting There from Stazione Marittima:
• On foot: 20–25 minutes through the Old Town and along Corso Cavour. Address: Corso Cavour 12
• Taxi: 10 minutes, EUR 8–12
๐ถ Prices & Opening Hours:

โ ๏ธ Tip: if your ship's schedule coincides with an evening performance — book your ticket in advance. An unforgettable experience.
๐ 7. Street Food & Market — Gastronomic Bari
๐ก Interesting Facts & Key Information:
Bari is the gastronomic capital of Puglia. Street food here is regarded as just as much a cultural treasure as the medieval monuments. Do try it — and take your time: in Bari people eat slowly and with great pleasure. ๐
๐น Focaccia barese — Bari's most famous street food. Thick, fluffy dough with olive oil, cherry tomatoes and olives. Sold in tiny bakeries by the slice for EUR 1–3.
๐น Panzerotto — a deep-fried pastry filled with mozzarella and tomato. Crispy on the outside, melting inside. EUR 2–3. ๐ฅ
๐น Orecchiette — the traditional pasta shaped like small "little ears". Local women in the alleys of Bari Vecchia shape it by hand in front of passers-by. EUR 5–8 in trattorias.
๐น Mercato del Pesce — the open-air fish market next to Piazza del Ferrarese. Best visited early in the morning, when the day's fresh catch arrives straight from the sea. ๐
๐น Tarallo — a crunchy dried ring of bread with fennel and olive oil. A great souvenir — it keeps well and packs easily.
๐ History:
The culinary traditions of Bari were shaped by every people that ruled here over the millennia: Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards. It was the Arab heritage that gave Apulian cuisine its love of spices and dried fruits; the Norman influence brought meat-cooking techniques; the Spanish legacy introduced chocolate and tomatoes. Focaccia barese has been known since the Middle Ages, baked in communal ovens and sold in market squares. Today the tradition lives on — and no bakery in Bari deviates from the original recipe.
๐ข How to Find It from the Port:
• On foot to Bari Vecchia: 15–20 minutes. Via dell'Arco Basso (Orecchiette Street) — from Piazza del Ferrarese into the heart of the Old Town

• Lunch in an Old Town trattoria (menu del giorno): EUR 12–18 (starter + main + drink)
• Street food: EUR 5–10 (focaccia + panzerotto + tarallo + gelato)

๐น Alberobello — the world's only town with more than 1,500 traditional trulli houses: conical dry-stone constructions built without mortar, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Utterly fairy-tale in appearance. ๐บ

โ ๏ธ Essential Tips Before Going Ashore
๐ All-aboard rule: you must be back on board 60 minutes before departure. If you are late, the ship will not wait — and catching up with it at the next port will be at your own expense.
๐ถ Distance from port to the Old Town: 15–20 minutes on foot — a leisurely walk along the seafront.
๐ Taxis: queue at the terminal exit. Fare to the centre EUR 8–12. Check that the meter is running, or agree on the price before you get in.
๐ Bus No. 50 (Circolare Porto): runs a circular route between the port and the centre every 20 minutes, EUR 1.00 per journey (buy tickets in the DropTicket app).
๐ชช Documents: carry a photocopy of your passport + your cruise card (Ship Card).
๐ถ Cash: have EUR 30–60 in cash for street food, bakeries and small souvenir shops. ATMs are available near the port and throughout the centre.
๐ Clothing: comfortable shoes are essential — the Old Town's cobblestones are uneven. To enter the basilica and cathedral, shoulders and knees must be covered.
โ๏ธ Sun protection: in summer temperatures can reach +32–35 °C. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential.
๐ Safety: Bari is a safe tourist city. However, pickpocketing does occur in crowds around Piazza del Ferrarese and in Bari Vecchia. Keep your belongings in front of you and do not leave your phone on a café table.
๐ฑ Internet: free WiFi is available in the port and throughout the city centre. Download an offline Google Maps area in advance for navigation.
๐ฎ๐น Language: English is understood in tourist areas, but a few words of Italian (buongiorno, grazie, per favore) will open any door.
