MSC Cruises becomes the first in the industry to confirm real methane emissions level on its ships
The company MSC Cruises has received independent confirmation and recognition of actual methane emissions for two of its cruise ships — MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia.
The certification was conducted by the international expert organization Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore together with the maritime administration of the ships' country of registry.
This is the first time in the cruise industry that a company has replaced theoretical calculations with real, verified data to comply with the environmental requirements of the FuelEU Maritime regulation.
Key verification results:
MSC Euribia: methane slip was recorded at 1.48%.
MSC World Europa: the slip rate was 1.67%.
FuelEU standard: both ships demonstrated results that are significantly better than the standard default value of 3.1% established by the European regulation.
“This certification is a major step forward in how methane emissions are measured and reported in our industry”, — noted Michele Francioni, Chief Energy Transition Officer at MSC Cruises.
“By replacing standard assumptions with independently verified data based on the actual operational performance of the vessels, we improve the accuracy and credibility of reporting within FuelEU Maritime. This approach supports informed regulatory decision-making and underscores the importance of precise measurements on the maritime sector's path toward achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.”
Significance for the industry
The findings provide valuable practical insights into the real-world performance of dual-fuel engines operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG).
According to the cruise company, this information will not only ensure more accurate environmental reporting to regulators but will also enable more balanced and well-founded decisions on the path to decarbonization in the future.
