What happened?

The decision was made against the backdrop of the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa, where an unprecedented number of people arrived within one day. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the measure as «extraordinary and temporary» and separately emphasized that it would remain in force «only for as long as necessary, with special attention to minimizing the impact on summer tourist flows». According to ANSA, the controls have been introduced for approximately one month and will be carried out at ports and airports.

An important context often lost in loud headlines: the European Commission confirms that there are no migration flows from Ceuta to the mainland — the enclave has the status of an external EU border, and it is impossible to leave it without a border check. As of August 1, the situation in Ceuta itself had practically returned to normal, and more than 48,000 people had already been returned to Morocco under bilateral agreements.



What this means for cruise travelers

The Western Mediterranean is a region where itineraries traditionally combine ports in Spain and Italy, so let us look at the practical implications:

• Cruises are operating without changes. Ships are calling at ports according to schedule. On crossings from Spanish ports to Italian ports (for example, Barcelona – Civitavecchia or Palma – Genoa), passengers may face a passport check at the arrival port — allow a little extra time for disembarkation.

• Flights between Spain and Italy are now accompanied by border control. If your travel plan includes arriving in one country and departing from another, simply arrive at the airport a little earlier.

• Keep your passport with you at all times. During shore excursions in Spain, Italy and France, take your international passport, not only your cruise card. France has also strengthened checks at its border with Spain.

• For Ukrainian citizens, nothing changes in practical terms: the visa-free regime with the EU remains fully in force. This is only a physical document check, not a new entry requirement.
