SOUTH EUROPE CRUISES
South Europe Cruises — are the very format of travel that often begins one's introduction to the cruise world. At the same time, it is a destination people return to again and again. The Mediterranean is not just a geographical region, but the cultural heart of Europe, where every port has its own character, history, and atmosphere.
It was here that the civilizations that defined the modern world were formed: the Roman Empire, Ancient Greece, and the maritime republics of Italy. Today, all of this is accessible within a single journey — without exhausting travels, transfers, or constant hotel changes.
Four Gates Group offers South Europe cruises on the world's best liners — from affordable options to premium and luxury segments. This is an opportunity to see several countries in 5–10 days, waking up in a new city every day while staying in your own comfortable “hotel on the water.”
Additionally, we include comments from the CEO and co-owner of FOUR GATES - Mykola Plokhotniuk. He is always happy to share his unique cruise travel experience and life hacks.
🧭 SOUTH EUROPE CRUISE ROUTES
South Europe covers the most saturated and diverse routes in the cruise industry. The main countries included in this region are:
Italy — Rome, Genoa, Naples, Venice. This is world-class history, architecture, and gastronomy;
France — Marseille and the French Riviera with their elegance and atmosphere of luxury;
Spain — Barcelona, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca — a blend of culture and relaxation;
Greece — the islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Crete — symbols of Mediterranean romance;
Malta — a compact but incredibly atmospheric country with a unique history;
Turkey — Istanbul and the Aegean coast with a blend of East and West;
Croatia — one of the most popular countries, with ports located on the shores of the Adriatic Sea;
Montenegro — the Adriatic with crystal clear water and the breathtaking port of Kotor and the extraordinary Bay of Kotor;
Malta — an island fortress-country, the true home of knights with a port in the capital, Valletta;
Morocco — often included in Canary Islands cruise routes and cruises around Europe;
Tunisia — another pearl of the African continent, located directly in the Mediterranean Sea. Often included in classic Western Mediterranean cruises.
This very diversity makes Mediterranean cruises universal — they are suitable for both first-time travelers and experienced tourists.
🌟 FEATURES OF MEDITERRANEAN CRUISES
South Europe — is not just a route, but a whole set of impressions that are difficult to find in any other region.
First and foremost, it is a concentration of cultural heritage. No other region in the world has such a number of historical landmarks per square kilometer. Every stop is a new city with a thousand-year history.
The second important aspect is gastronomy. Italian pasta, French cheeses, Spanish tapas, Greek seafood — every day of the cruise becomes a gastronomic journey.
Third — climate and comfort. The Mediterranean is famous for its mild climate, allowing you to enjoy the journey without extreme temperatures.
And, of course, the huge selection of liners. It is here that the newest ships of cruise companies operate, which means the maximum level of service, entertainment, and infrastructure.
Additionally, it is worth noting:
*convenient logistics - reaching European ports is much easier and more cost-effective than traveling to countries on other continents;
*port infrastructure, which allows for convenient access to any location in popular cities;
*an extraordinary number of tourist locations both within the city and in areas closest to the port. I have seen for myself that you can find many interesting things in the same port, which is why cruise companies offer dozens of various excursions.
📅 BEST TIME FOR A CRUISE
Seasonality in South Europe is clearly defined, and it is important to consider this when planning.
June - August: peak season during the summer months. This is due to both the greater availability of vacations and the school holiday period. Therefore, prices are highest in summer.
IMPORTANT: this period is not suitable for everyone due to high temperatures. Given that a cruise is more of an excursion-based holiday, walking in ports can be quite hot. On the other hand, no one is forbidden from staying on the comfortable cruise liner and relaxing!))
April – May: one of the best periods. Comfortable temperatures, fewer tourists, pleasant prices. Ideal for those who want a peaceful holiday.
September – October: the golden mean. Mild weather, warm sea, and fewer crowds. Many experts consider this period the best for a cruise.
In other months, it is generally cooler and many areas on the open decks are closed (e.g., the water park), although it all depends on the temperature at the specific time.
My opinion: as a rule, I choose the spring or autumn period. This is the most comfortable time for Mediterranean cruises, not only in terms of comfort but also due to some of the most favorable prices. I also recommend looking at partial one-way routes (segments of 4-6 nights), as this allows for much more cost-effective cruise bookings.
🚢 CRUISE LINES AND SHIPS
South Europe is a region where the world's most popular cruise lines compete, meaning some of the newest liners are based here and some of the best prices are offered.
STANDARD class cruise lines: MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celestyal Cruises, Carnival Cruises, Disney Cruise Line.
PREMIUM class cruise lines: Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Cunard Line, Virgin Voyages (adults-only), Azamara, Oceania Cruises.
LUXURY class cruise lines: Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Ponant, Explora Journeys, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Atlas Ocean Voyages, Paul Gauguin Cruises, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Hapag-Lloyd, Viking Ocean Cruises.

SAILING SHIP class cruise lines: Star Clippers, Windstar Cruises (sailing yachts), Sea Cloud Cruises, Club Med, Orient Express Sailing Yachts.
EXPEDITION class cruise lines: typically, specialized expedition liners are not represented in this specific region.
Every year, cruise lines build new liners and replace their Mediterranean fleet, just as in other cruise regions. Therefore, the number of liners is constantly changing. Both the newest state-of-the-art mega-liners and older ships performing more non-standard routes with calls at small, interesting ports are represented.

⚓ MAIN DEPARTURE PORTS
South Europe cruises start from the largest ports:
Barcelona — one of Europe's main cruise hubs and a convenient port to start a cruise.
Rome (Civitavecchia) — the gateway to Italy. Although Civitavecchia is located quite far from Rome, it doesn't make the port any less popular.
Genoa — the capital of Liguria and the most popular departure port for MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises.
Marseille — a convenient French port.
Athens (Piraeus) — the center of Greek routes.
Venice (Mestre) - a TOP port for Eastern Mediterranean cruises.
All these ports have well-established logistics and convenient flight connections.
👨👩👧 WHO IS THIS REGION FOR?
South Europe is a universal destination.
It is ideal for those planning a cruise for the first time.
For families — thanks to the large amount of entertainment on board.
For couples — because of the romantic atmosphere.
And even for experienced travelers who want to dive deeper into European culture.
💰 COST OF CRUISES
One of the main myths is that cruises are expensive. In fact, a South Europe cruise is often more cost-effective than a classic trip.
Prices start from approximately 500–700 $ per person per week and include accommodation, meals, entertainment, and transportation between countries.
The final cost depends on the season, the ship, and the cabin category.
