History of MSC Cruises
The Beginning: Roots in Maritime Transport
MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) was founded in 1970 by Captain Gianluigi Aponte in Naples, Italy. Initially, it was a small cargo transport business that gradually grew into one of the leaders in the global container shipping market.
In the early 1980s, MSC decided to expand its operations and enter the cruise market. In 1988, the company acquired its first cruise ship, the "MS Monterey," marking the beginning of MSC Cruises. This step ushered in a new era for the company, focusing on creating modern and luxurious cruise travel experiences.
Rapid Growth and a New Generation Fleet (1990-2000)
In the 1990s, MSC Cruises actively expanded its fleet and geographical routes. The company invested in the renovation and modernization of its vessels, aiming to offer clients a premium service level. During this period, MSC Cruises established itself as a popular operator in the Mediterranean, from where its global expansion began.
An Era of Innovation and International Recognition (2000-2020)
In the early 2000s, MSC Cruises focused on building new liners. A fleet expansion program was launched, which included the construction of Lirica-class ships (2003-2005), followed by larger and more modern ships in the Musica, Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside, Meraviglia Plus, and World classes.
Key milestones during this period:
• 2003: Launch of MSC Lirica, the first ship built specifically for MSC Cruises.
• 2008: Commissioning of MSC Fantasia, the company’s first ship capable of carrying over 4,000 passengers.
• 2010s: Development and construction of Meraviglia and Seaside-class ships, symbols of modern technologies, innovation, and comfort on board.
• From the 2020s onwards, MSC developed the new World-class ships, which featured record sizes and innovative designs. This also introduced new cabin types: Balcony cabins overlooking the ship’s promenade, as well as unique Infinity-window cabins.
MSC Cruises actively expanded its presence in international markets, moving beyond Europe and offering routes in the Caribbean, South America, Asia, and the Middle East.

Guests who have lost items on board should contact the registration desk or guest services to check if their items have been handed in.
4. What additional costs should I plan for?
Purchases at the onboard bar will incur a service charge, automatically added to all purchases: 15% gratuity for routes in Europe, the Emirates, the Southern Caribbean, the Red Sea, South America (Brazil and Argentina), and the Far East, and 18% gratuity for routes in North America.
5. Are prices on board higher than on land?
No. In general, many products (such as alcohol, tobacco, and perfume) may be sold duty-free, providing discounts of up to 30% off retail prices on land. However, the cruise company does not guarantee the best price.
*Subject to routes and applicable laws.
6. Is smoking allowed on board?
According to global standards, there are fewer smoking areas on board than non-smoking areas, and they are marked with signs and ashtrays. Smoking is prohibited in all indoor areas except the casino (the casinos on MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia are non-smoking areas).
Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is prohibited in cabins, on cabin balconies, and in other areas unless clearly marked with signs and ashtrays.
IMPORTANT: The company reserves the right to charge a fee (fine) if passengers are caught smoking in non-smoking areas of the ship. Repeated smoking in non-smoking areas may ultimately result in disembarkation.

Online registration
Online registration for your cruise is a mandatory procedure to receive your cruise tickets. Especially for MSC Cruises guests, the specialists at Four Gates Group have selected the most frequently asked questions and provided answers to them.
The information is sourced from official MSC Cruises resources.
IMPORTANT: information may change and be updated. Please confirm answers to any important questions with your Four Gates Group cruise expert.
Of course, if you have booked your cruise through Four Gates Group, you do not need to spend time reading all the information and going through the tedious online registration process. Your cruise specialist will take care of the registration for you!
1. Why do I need to complete web registration?
Web registration is used to collect your personal information necessary to issue your electronic ticket and boarding pass. Please note that all guests must enter their details.
2. What is the difference between an electronic ticket and a boarding pass?
To board our cruises, you will only need one of the following documents: an electronic ticket or a boarding pass.
An electronic ticket is a digital ticket that contains a summary of all the services booked, route information, baggage tags, and other useful details for your MSC cruise.
A boarding pass is an online document issued only to customers who book tickets directly on the website and complete the online registration. It includes a QR code that will be scanned at embarkation.
3. How can I receive my electronic tickets or boarding pass?
If you booked your cruise through Four Gates Group, your cruise specialist will send you the electronic ticket or boarding pass after registration.
If you booked your ticket through a travel agency, you can request the tickets directly from your travel agent.
4. When should I complete the web registration?
Web registration is available from 30 days up to 24 hours before departure. We recommend completing your web registration as early as possible so that you receive your electronic ticket and boarding pass as soon as possible.
5. What information do I need to enter during web registration?
For online registration, you need to enter your international passport details (the one you will use for your cruise), your full residential address, phone number, and email address.
6. Do I need to register my credit card during web registration?
No, you can register your credit card onboard at the Activation Points or leave a cash deposit at Guest Services at the registration desk immediately after boarding. Please ensure that your credit or debit card can be used abroad.
Four Gates Group: Our specialists recommend making a cash deposit. This is because banks often freeze funds on your card beyond what you have spent. Typically, the unfreezing of funds can take up to 30 days and happens automatically.
7. What information do I need to know about boarding time?
Boarding time information is one of the most important details for the cruise!
Your boarding time will be specified on your cruise ticket. If you arrive later than the specified time, you will still be registered for boarding.
IMPORTANT: Registration closes for all passengers 2 hours before the ship’s departure (except when the ship departs at night or stays in port for more than one day).
8. How can I combine my booking with another one to sit with friends at the same dinner table?
To request a shared dinner with friends or family, inform your cruise specialist about this.
Important: This feature is only available if all bookings are made through Four Gates Group.
Enter their booking number in the "Traveling with" section during web registration. Please note that shared dining is provided based on availability.
Service charges (tips)
During your stay on MSC Cruises ships, our guests interact with the crew members throughout the ship, who ensure excellent service. To maintain a high level of service for each guest, starting from April 1, 2021, a service charge is mandatory and is paid along with the cost of the cruise (you no longer need to pay tips onboard).
*The service charge does not apply to children under 2 years old at the time of the cruise departure.

What is satellite internet access and how does it work?
When at sea, it is impossible to access the Internet via high-speed broadband connections like on land. Instead, on-board Internet access is provided through connections between the ship and communication satellites in orbit high above the Earth.
Why is satellite internet access slower than a regular connection on land?
Your internet data has to travel great distances between the ship’s antenna and the nearest satellite, and it requires a clear line of sight between them.
Several factors can interfere with this, such as storms and large objects that can block the signal, such as steep mountains near the ship or tall buildings in ports. These obstacles can lead to slow response times or even cause the system to stop responding.
When is it better/worse to use satellite internet access?
Peak periods for internet use on board are typically in the morning or when many guests return from shore excursions. During these times, overload can slow down the internet, just like on land.
Therefore, it is better to avoid these periods if possible.
Where on board is satellite internet available?
Satellite internet is available in all public areas of the ship and in most cabins, including all MSC Yacht Club suites. All you need is one of our satellite internet packages and a mobile internet device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.).
Does the package cover the entire cruise?
Yes, all packages are unlimited in terms of data. You will have 24/7 access.
What is the main difference between the Browse and Browse & Stream packages?
With the Browse & Stream package, you can use video calls, streaming music, and video. These features are not available with the Browse package.
How do I activate devices on board?
On board, log in to the MSC Captive Portal with the first device you want to use. After registration, you will be automatically redirected to the activation page. Click the "START" button, and the device will be registered. To register additional devices, log in with other devices using the username and password created during registration.
Can I change devices after activation?
No, once you activate a device, it cannot be changed.
Can I upgrade the Browse package to Browse & Stream?
Yes, you can upgrade your package on board via the MSC Captive Portal (the website used to activate your prepaid package). You can upgrade to a Browse package with additional devices or to a Browse & Stream package. You will only pay the difference in the full cost of the packages (to keep the 20% discount).

A cruise is not only one of the most luxurious and relaxing ways to see the world, but also one of the safest.
This is because each cruise ship must be built, equipped, and operated in accordance with strict requirements of the international maritime treaty known as the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention, developed by the International Maritime Organization, a UN agency responsible for shipping.
As a result, for example, all cruise ships must have regularly inspected lifeboats, life rafts, and life jackets for each person on board, as well as a specified minimum additional capacity.
The state-of-the-art ships of the MSC Cruises fleet far exceed these requirements, with backup mechanical, navigation, and protective systems. And, of course, our crews undergo extensive training, recertification, and regular emergency drills, including ship evacuation.
So, you can travel on your cruise with complete peace of mind.
Safety and Code of Conduct
Before departure, mandatory emergency drills (or briefings if you’re embarking at a secondary port) will take place.
In accordance with the international Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention, you are required to participate in the emergency drill, during which you will learn how to properly put on a life jacket and what procedures to follow in case of an emergency.
Children (0-12 years old)
If you are traveling with infants or children under 12, an identification wristband will be given to them upon boarding, which they must wear throughout the cruise. In the unlikely event of an emergency when your children are at the kids’ club, our staff will escort them to the children’s gathering area, where they will wait for your arrival and escort them to the muster point.
Safety
Guests are protected by a comprehensive security system, such as the MSC Cruises access control and verification system, which requires identity confirmation for boarding with tickets and according to a pre-approved list. Furthermore, all luggage must pass through strict security checkpoints, cabins are protected with locks and individual safes, public areas are monitored by cameras, and highly trained security personnel patrol the ship constantly and are on emergency call 24/7.
Code of Conduct
We want every guest to have an enjoyable cruise experience. Therefore, MSC Cruises does not tolerate any behavior that affects the comfort, health, safety, and well-being of other guests or our crew. Please review the terms of the contract for more detailed information about this important policy.
You can find more detailed information about our Guest Behavior Policy here.
How is safety ensured on board?
All cruise ships are designed and operated in accordance with the strict requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN agency that sets global safety and operational standards for cruise ships by adopting treaties, regulations, and resolutions outlined in the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention.
Safety rules and requirements are strict, and ships often far exceed the minimum requirements, such as having backup mechanical, navigation, and protective systems on board.
Ship crews undergo extensive training, certification, drills, and emergency response scenarios, including ship evacuation.
All cruise ships have lifeboats, life rafts, and life-saving equipment for each person on board, as well as additional capacity.
When and where are drills held?
Upon boarding at major ports, all guests are invited to participate in a one-hour safety drill conducted in 6 languages.
The safety drills involve the entire crew and simulate evacuation procedures, where guests are instructed to take their life jackets from their cabins and proceed to their designated muster station, where they will receive additional safety instructions. In secondary ports, before the ship departs, a detailed safety briefing is conducted for all newly arrived guests.
Safety briefings usually take place in a designated area (usually in the theater or at the muster point) and do not involve the entire crew. They are conducted by a team of social hosts and entertainers who assist guests in familiarizing themselves with safety equipment and procedures.
The safety briefings and drills fully comply with the strict SOLAS requirements.
Are there any maps or other instructions?
Safety instructions on how to reach the designated muster station and where to find the life jackets are available in all cabins in 6 languages (ITA, ENG, GER, FRA, SPA, PORT, RUS) in the cabin’s information booklet and on the back of the cabin door (in 6 languages), where fire safety instructions and a map are also displayed showing "You are here" and primary and secondary evacuation routes to muster stations.
What other improvements are used to ensure safety, such as maps showing routes to the nearest lifeboats, etc.?
Maps showing the locations of various muster stations are displayed in all public areas and on stairwells, etc. All public areas are also equipped with arrows directing guests to muster stations and stairways to reach them.
In addition, a safety video (in Italian and English) is broadcast 24/7 on the in-cabin TV system on channel 1.
How is our crew trained to operate lifeboats?
The crew undergoes regular training on land, before boarding, and on board. Comprehensive on-board training, coordinated by the ship’s safety officer, consists of 4 two-hour modules as follows:
A. Introduction
B. Emergency Procedures
C. Firefighting
D. Rescue
A significant part of Section D is dedicated to lifeboat operation. All crew members responsible for lifeboats receive additional and specialized training on preparation, lowering, operation, and maintenance of lifeboats.
How often are lifeboat drills conducted?
Every week, the crew conducts general emergency drills simulating a fire and evacuation, including drills for abandoning the ship with lifeboats.
What are the industry’s fire safety regulations on board cruise ships?
The cruise industry adheres to strict regulations contained in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
These regulations include fire prevention, fire protection, and firefighting systems, crew training, and fire response procedures.
What measures are taken to prevent fires on MSC cruise ships?
MSC ships are designed to provide fire and smoke isolation, and the MSC Cruises fleet, like all cruise ships meeting industry standards, is equipped with various passive fire protection and smoke removal measures, including fire-resistant internal doors and partitions, fire dampers, and ventilation systems. The ships are equipped with smoke management systems, including fire and smoke dampers, and in addition to fire-resistant doors, they feature separate ventilation systems and airtight corridors to contain smoke and prevent its spread.
The rules and regulations for fire and smoke prevention and containment are strictly enforced on all MSC cruise ships.
The MSC Cruises fleet uses several different systems to prevent fires. The primary prevention system is the Consilium system, which consists of various types of detectors located throughout the ship and categorized by controlled zones. This prevention system is supported by the Fire Patrol, a patrol carried out by onboard firefighters 24 hours a day, in four-hour shifts. The patrol is recorded using a digital system with multiple points located in different zones of the ship.
What systems are used to control fires on board if they do occur?
The MSC Cruises fleet uses several different systems to control the spread of fire and smoke, including fire-resistant internal doors and partitions, fire dampers, and ventilation systems.
The main firefighting system is the Hi-Fog fire suppression system, a high-pressure water mist firefighting system that suppresses and extinguishes fires by releasing fine water mist at high speed. The water mist is generated by the system when activated, pushing water under high pressure through specially designed sprinkler and spray heads.
Does the crew undergo firefighting training?
Crew members undergo extensive training to ensure they respond effectively and correctly in case of fire or smoke. In accordance with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) of 1995, all crew members must undergo basic safety training (BST), which includes basic firefighting skills.
On board each MSC ship, weekly firefighting drills are conducted in different areas of the ship.
The emergency action plan for fire-fighting on MSC ships is carried out by our four fire patrols, one of which is responsible for engine room fires, and two cooling teams. All teams are trained and coordinated by the onboard safety officer.

What is the policy regarding infants under one year old?
Infants under one year old are allowed on board, except for cruises lasting 11 nights or more. For such longer cruises, infants must be at least one year old on the embarkation date.
Why can’t infants under one year old travel on cruises lasting 11 nights or more?
This policy is related to the fact that long cruises often include several days at sea, which may prevent us from providing emergency medical assistance to infants.
What if I booked two seven-day cruises? Do the age requirements for infants under one year old apply?
No, in this case, age requirements do not apply as they are considered two separate cruises.
What happens if a new booking does not comply with the policy?
You will be offered a free cruise transition with a new price, or the booking will be canceled according to the standard cancellation policy.

Who is considered an adult?
To be considered an adult, passengers must be between the ages of 18 and 21 at the time of embarkation, depending on the itinerary.
Are there any exceptions?

- The cabin may have either one minor aged 12 or older, or two minors, with the older one being at least 12 years old and the younger one being at least 8 years old.

The parent or legal guardian must purchase a bracelet to have access to the minor’s cabin at any time during the cruise.
