History of Cunard Line

The history of Cunard Line is not just a chronicle of sea voyages but an entire era inscribed in the history of humankind. Since its founding in 1840 by Samuel Cunard, the company has become a symbol of British engineering, discipline, safety, and the highest class of service at sea.
Samuel Cunard was not just an entrepreneur – he was a visionary. In 1839, he received a contract from the British Admiralty to deliver mail between England and America, which marked the beginning of regular transatlantic crossings. Just a year later, his first liner, RMS Britannia, crossed the Atlantic in 14 days – an unprecedented achievement of that time. On board there was comfort never before dreamed of, even in London’s finest hotels: private cabins, a library, a fireplace, and even musical evenings.
In the second half of the 19th century, the company continued to grow, remaining true to its motto – “Speed, Safety and Comfort.” At that time, Cunard competed with dozens of other lines, but it was the one that set the standards of maritime transport, introducing mandatory safety inspections and strict passenger service rules.

Birth of legends
At the beginning of the 20th century, the legendary liners Lusitania and Mauretania were launched. The latter held the Blue Riband of the Atlantic – the symbol of the fastest ocean crossing – for 22 consecutive years.
Lusitania, in turn, entered history tragically: in 1915, the ship was sunk by a German submarine, which became one of the reasons for the United States entering World War I. Despite the losses, Cunard endured and became Britain’s national pride.
After the war, the company introduced new ships – Aquitania, Scythia, Carinthia, Franconia – and began actively developing its service direction. Beauty salons, class-differentiated restaurants, libraries, and music lounges appeared on board.

The golden age of seafaring
The 1930s became the “golden age” of Cunard. It was then that the liners Queen Mary (1936) and Queen Elizabeth (1940) appeared. They became true symbols of luxury and technological perfection. On board these ships traveled royals, politicians, artists, and writers. The salons hosted jazz evenings, film screenings, concerts, and literary readings.
During World War II, both liners were mobilized and used as troop transports. Queen Mary carried more than 800,000 soldiers, remaining in history as the “Grey Ghost of the Atlantic.” After the war, the ships were refitted and returned to their peaceful duties.

The era of Queen Elizabeth 2
In 1967, the world saw the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 – a liner that became synonymous with its era. It was designed by a team of British engineers as a “ship of the future”: featuring air conditioning, televisions, elevators, and motion stabilizers. QE2 served the company for more than 40 years, carrying presidents, artists, and millions of passengers.

Revival of the legend
In 2004, Queen Mary 2 was launched – the first true ocean liner in 40 years, capable of withstanding the most powerful Atlantic storms. It became the pride of the British fleet and the flagship of Cunard Line. After it came Queen Victoria in 2007, Queen Elizabeth in 2010, and in 2024 – the newest Queen Anne, which embodied the very best of tradition and innovation.

Cunard today
Today, Cunard Line is not just a cruise company. It is the guardian of British elegance, unique style, and attention to detail. On board the liners take place gala evenings, literary festivals, concerts, and tastings of the world’s finest wines. The company remains true to its principles, combining history and modernity in every voyage.

Passenger recognition
For Cunard, the main award is guest loyalty. According to annual Cruise Critic surveys, more than 60% of the company’s passengers travel again, and a quarter of clients have traveled with Cunard more than five times.
Such figures are achieved by only a few in the premium segment – and Cunard consistently remains among them.

Luggage

What luggage allowances apply on Cunard Line ships?
Each guest is permitted to bring up to two suitcases weighing no more than 23 kg each, plus one piece of hand luggage. This is the company’s standard ensuring comfort during loading and storage in the cabin. Cunard does not impose a strict limit on the number of bags – the main rule is that they fit safely in the cabin and do not obstruct movement.

How should luggage be labeled before embarkation?
Before your trip, print your personal luggage tags from your My Voyage account and attach them to every bag. The tags allow staff to deliver your luggage quickly to your cabin. If tags are lost, they can be obtained at the terminal before embarkation.

Can luggage be sent to the ship in advance?
Yes. The company offers the Cunard Luggage Valet service available to residents of the US, UK and selected European countries. Your luggage will be delivered directly to your cabin a few days before the cruise — especially convenient for connecting or long-haul flights.

Are there any limits on luggage weight or size?
Formally – no, but Cunard recommends reasonable dimensions: a suitcase should not exceed 90×75×43 cm. On world cruises, up to three suitcases per passenger are allowed.

What items are prohibited on board?
Flammable substances, weapons, long-bladed knives, household heating devices (kettles, irons), drones, and e-scooters are prohibited. Plants, fruits, and animal-origin products are also restricted for import into certain countries – especially Australia and New Zealand.

Can alcohol and beverages be brought on board?
Each adult guest may bring one bottle of wine or champagne up to 750 ml. Alcohol purchased ashore is stored until the end of the cruise and returned on disembarkation day.

How is luggage delivered to the cabin?
After check-in at the terminal, luggage undergoes scanning and a security check. Stewards then deliver it to your cabin within the first two hours after embarkation. You may leave a card on your door requesting later delivery – useful if you wish to have lunch or stroll around the ship first.

What should I do if luggage is lost or delayed?
Immediately contact the Guest Services desk. Cunard initiates a tracing procedure and liaises with port authorities. If necessary, suitcases are delivered to the next port of call. The company also reimburses expenses for temporary items upon documentary proof.

Is luggage insurance provided?
Yes, all guests are automatically covered under the Cunard Care Program if purchased with the booking. However, For Gates Group recommends additional travel insurance covering loss or damage – we will select the best policy for your itinerary.

Can luggage be stored on board between cruises?
Yes, if you combine two consecutive voyages, Cunard offers luggage storage for up to 30 days – convenient for world cruises or extended itineraries with layovers.

Which items should be kept in hand luggage?
All valuables (documents, medications, cameras, gadgets, jewelry, and money) should be kept with you. Hand luggage should also include a change of clothes, swimwear, and toiletries – your checked luggage may arrive at the cabin with a slight delay.

What happens to luggage when changing cabins or receiving an upgrade?
If you receive a cabin upgrade during the cruise, stewards will transfer your luggage to the new accommodation. Simply inform the accommodation service.

Tip from Four Gates Group:
Before departure, photograph the contents of your suitcases and the attached tags. These photos will assist in compensation claims in case of loss or delay.

Can sports equipment be transported?
Yes, but only with prior notice. Bicycles, kayaks, tennis rackets, and golf clubs are accepted in limited quantities and stored in specially equipped areas.

How is luggage handled during disembarkation?
The day before arrival at port, a colored tag with a number is delivered to your cabin. The color corresponds to the disembarkation group. Stewards remove luggage in advance, and passengers collect it in the terminal upon arrival. Four Gates Group advises not to rush off the ship to avoid queues at the luggage belts.

Four Gates Group cares for your comfort at every stage of the journey.
We will help you arrange luggage delivery, insurance, and necessary permits in advance so that your Cunard Line cruise runs perfectly from the first to the last day.

Documents and visas

What main documents are required for boarding a Cunard Line ship?
You must have a valid passport, cruise ticket (e-ticket), medical insurance, and, if necessary, visas for the countries included in your itinerary. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the cruise ends. At embarkation, the original document is required – copies are not accepted.

How can I find out which visas are needed for my itinerary?
After booking, Cunard provides a detailed list of countries requiring visas. This information is available in your My Voyage account and is also sent via email. For example, Mediterranean itineraries often require a Schengen visa, while trips through the USA require a B1/B2 visa or an ESTA authorization.

Does Cunard Line assist with visa applications?
The company does not submit documents directly to embassies but provides all necessary confirmations of the itinerary and booking for visa centers. For Gates Group, as an official Cunard partner, helps clients obtain visas of any complexity: U.S., Schengen, U.K., Canadian, and others.

Is a visa required if I don’t plan to go ashore?
Yes, in many countries a visa is required even if passengers do not plan to leave the ship. This is due to border control regulations. Exceptions include some Caribbean ports and domestic cruises (e.g., around the British Isles).

What do children need for a cruise?
Minors must have their own passport. If a child travels without one or both parents, a notarized consent form for travel is required. In some countries, a translated version in English is also necessary.

Can I travel with a temporary passport or a document issued after loss?
Yes, but only with proof of identity and a visa if required. For Gates Group recommends notifying Cunard in advance so the note can be added to the system and issues at embarkation avoided.

What should I do if I lose my passport during the cruise?
You must immediately contact Guest Services. Cunard will arrange communication with the nearest consulate and, in some ports, provide an escort to help obtain a temporary travel document.

Are electronic visas and permits accepted?
Yes. Cunard accepts electronic visas (e.g., eTA for Canada or eVisa for Australia) provided that you present a printed copy and proof of payment.

Is a visa required for cruises that start and end in the same country?
If the ship does not call at foreign ports, no visa is required. However, for international routes, even if embarkation and disembarkation take place in the same country, visas for transit stops may be mandatory.

Can copies of documents be used on board?
After embarkation, copies of your passport and visa should be stored separately from the originals. This helps in case of loss. Cunard recommends keeping digital copies in encrypted cloud storage or on your phone.

Tips from Four Gates Group:
– Check your passport validity in advance – most consulates require at least 6 months of validity remaining.
– Apply for visas no later than 4 weeks before departure.
– If you have dual citizenship, verify which passport to use when crossing borders.
– For British cruises calling at Ireland, a separate visa may be required even if you hold a Schengen visa.
– Our specialists will check all visa requirements and documents free of charge before your trip.

Documents and preparation for departure

When does online registration for a Cunard Line cruise open and why is it required?
Online registration opens 90 days before the departure date. In your My Voyage account, you enter passport details, complete a medical questionnaire, choose a convenient embarkation time, and print luggage tags. This is a mandatory step – without it, a boarding pass cannot be issued.

What is included in the boarding document package?
After registration is complete, an electronic package is generated: ticket (e-ticket), cruise itinerary, luggage tags, recommended arrival time, and a list of required documents for specific ports. All documents must be printed or saved on your phone.

Are medical documents required?
Yes. At embarkation, passengers confirm that they have no symptoms of infectious diseases. In some countries (e.g., Australia or the USA), proof of vaccination may be required. Those with chronic conditions are advised to bring a medical summary and any necessary medications in their original packaging.

How can I speed up the registration process at the port?
Four Gates Group recommends completing all data in advance and arriving at the port 2-3 hours before departure. This helps avoid queues and ensures a smooth check-in. Upon arrival at the terminal, passengers go through document verification, receive a boarding card, and check in their luggage.

Can the embarkation time be changed after registration?
Yes, in your My Voyage account you can adjust the embarkation time if the desired session is still available. However, Cunard recommends adhering to the selected interval to prevent overcrowding in the terminal.

What are the requirements for photos in the My Voyage profile?
The photo must be taken against a neutral background, without a head covering or sunglasses, and clearly showing your face. It is used for identification during boarding and when entering the ship.

Is it necessary to print documents, or are electronic copies sufficient?
Electronic copies are accepted; however, Four Gates Group strongly recommends printing your ticket and luggage tags – paper versions are more reliable in case of network issues.

Can documents be handed to a Cunard representative at the terminal?
Yes, if needed, staff will help you print missing documents. However, they are not authorized to store passports or visas, so originals must always remain with the passenger.

Booking and rates

How can I book a Cunard Line cruise?
You can book on the company’s official website or through an authorized travel partner – such as Four Gates Group. Booking through an agency provides expert consultation, assistance in choosing an itinerary, arranging visas and flights, and personalized support up to embarkation. In addition, special fares and promotions often become available that are not offered for direct bookings.

What fare types does Cunard Line offer and how do they differ?
Cunard offers several main fare types:
Cunard Fare – the most flexible, allowing cabin and dining time selection, with cancellations permitted up to a certain date;
Saver Fare – a budget fare with fixed terms and no cabin selection;
Early Saver Fare – a mid-range option combining a lower price with limited flexibility;
Grills Suite Fare – premium fare for Princess and Queen’s Grill cabin guests with extended privileges;
Fly-Cruise Fare – includes flight and transfer;
World Voyage Fare – a special fare for world voyages with added bonuses and onboard credit.

How to choose the best fare for your trip?
Your choice depends on priorities. If flexibility matters – go for Cunard Fare. If price is key – choose Saver Fare. For luxury, consider Grills Suite Fare, and for long itineraries with flights – Fly-Cruise Fare. Four Gates Group will help select the right fare based on season, route, duration, and budget.

Can the booking be changed after confirmation?
Yes, but conditions depend on the fare type. With Cunard Fare, the date or itinerary can be changed without penalty before the set deadline. For Saver Fare and Early Saver Fare, changes are generally not permitted. When upgrading your cabin, only the price difference is paid.

What are the benefits of early booking?
Early booking offers:
– the best cabin selection;
– lower price;
– access to special promotions (Free Drinks, Onboard Credit, etc.);
– priority for excursion bookings.
Four Gates Group recommends booking 6-9 months before departure – the optimal time for savings and planning peace of mind.

Can the cruise be canceled and refunded?
Yes, refunds depend on the fare type and cancellation timing. Under Cunard Fare, up to 90-100% of the fare may be refunded if canceled early. Under Saver Fare and Early Saver Fare, no refund is available. With the Cunard Care Program insurance, a refund may still be possible in case of illness or unforeseen circumstances.

Are there discounts for regular Cunard guests?
Yes, the Cunard World Club loyalty program offers members discounts on future cruises, embarkation priority, free upgrades, and invitations to exclusive events. Four Gates Group assists in registration and ensures your benefits are retained when booking.

Can I book a cabin for a large family or group?
Yes, Cunard provides adjoining cabins and special group rates. When booking through Four Gates Group, discounts are available for groups of 8 or more, with flexible deposit terms.

What additional services can be added when booking?
You can pre-order drinks, excursion packages, spa treatments, internet, transfers, and even cabin decorations for special occasions. All options are available in the My Voyage section after booking confirmation.

Tips from Four Gates Group:
– Compare fares not only by price but also by cancellation policy – flexible fares are often more beneficial long term.
– If planning back-to-back cruises, ask about the Back-to-Back Discount.
– For Grill Suites bookings, cruises of 10-14 days offer the best balance of luxury and value.
– Watch for promotions in January-March: Wave Season is the best time for Cunard deals.
Four Gates Group will help select the fare according to your visa and flight needs for maximum comfort.

Transfer

Does Cunard Line provide a transfer from the airport to the port of embarkation?
Yes. For guests booking the Fly-Cruise Fare rate, Cunard provides a group transfer from the airport to the cruise terminal. Yes, Cunard offers private transfer services for guests in higher-category cabins, as well as upon request through Four Gates Group. Options include a private business-class car, a family minivan, or VIP concierge escort.

The transfer includes airport meet-and-greet, luggage assistance, transport to the port, and, if required, return transfer after the cruise. Drivers and escorts are Cunard representatives fluent in English and trained to the company’s service standards.

How can I find out the meeting time and location at the airport?
Transfer details are listed in your electronic documents and on the My Voyage website. Passengers also receive an email with meeting time and location a few days before departure. Four Gates Group duplicates this information for its clients and monitors the meeting on-site.

Can I use the transfer if I book flights independently?
Yes, provided you submit your flight details 30 days before the cruise. Cunard will attempt to coordinate the transfer with your arrival, although this cannot be guaranteed if the flight time differs significantly from the main charter arrival.

Does Cunard Line offer flights together with the cruise?
Yes, Cunard provides the Cunard CompleteAir Program, which includes selecting and booking flights, as well as transfer to and from the ship. This allows for a fully managed “turnkey” travel experience – the company handles all logistics.

What are the advantages of Cunard air packages?
The main advantages are flexibility and protection. If your flight is delayed or rescheduled, Cunard guarantees delivery to the ship, even if it has already departed (a connecting flight to the next port is arranged). Additionally, air packages often include baggage and meals.

Is the airport-to-ship transfer included in the air package?
Yes, for guests booking flights through Cunard, the transfer “airport – port – airport” is included. In some ports, additional private or group transfers are also available.

Safety

How does Cunard Line ensure passenger safety on board?
Safety is Cunard Line’s top priority. Every ship is built and operated in accordance with international maritime safety standards (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM). Security officers are on duty at all times, and all systems – from CCTV to fire protection – are monitored 24/7.

Are safety drills conducted for passengers?
Yes, participation in the muster drill is mandatory for all guests. It is held before departure and lasts about 20 minutes. During the drill, alarm signals, safety rules, and evacuation routes are explained. Your muster station is indicated on your cruise card and behind your cabin door.

What fire safety measures are in place?
All Cunard ships are equipped with modern smoke extraction systems, automatic sprinklers, smoke detectors, and fire doors. The crew receives regular firefighting training, and every crew member has a designated role in emergencies.

Dress code and clothing

What is the general dress code style on Cunard Line ships?
Cunard is renowned for its traditions and impeccable style. On board, an atmosphere of elegance prevails, where evening wear is not just a rule but part of cruise culture. The dress code is divided into two main formats: Formal (gala evening) and Smart Attire (elegant casual).

What does “Formal Night” or “Gala Evening” mean?
These are Cunard’s signature evenings when guests dress formally, and the ship transforms into a ballroom reminiscent of the Golden Age of ocean travel. Men are advised to wear a tuxedo, dark suit with tie, or tailcoat, while women should wear evening or cocktail dresses with elegant accessories and jewelry.

How many formal evenings are there per cruise?
The number depends on the voyage duration:
– 3-5 nights – 1 Gala Evening;
– 6-10 nights – 2 evenings;
– 11-20 nights – 3-4 evenings;
– over 20 nights – 5 or more Gala Evenings.
Themes (such as Black & White Ball or Roaring Twenties Night) are announced in the Daily Programme.

Can guests skip Gala Evenings?
Yes, participation is optional. Guests who prefer not to follow the formal dress code may dine at Lido or Kings Court buffet, where casual attire is accepted. However, access to main restaurants and bars on those evenings is restricted to guests dressed according to the dress code.

How should guests dress during the day?
Daytime attire reflects relaxed elegance: light dresses, chinos, shirts, summer suits, sandals. Swimwear is allowed in pool areas, but cover-ups or clothes must be worn when entering cafés or restaurants.

What does the Smart Attire style mean?
Smart Attire represents classic casual elegance without strict formality. Men may wear trousers and collared shirts; women may choose dresses, suits, skirts, or blouses. Jeans are permitted if they are neat and not ripped or athletic-style.

Are there footwear requirements?
Yes, beach flip-flops and open-soled shoes are not permitted in public areas. In the evenings, men must wear closed shoes and women elegant footwear. Sports shoes with non-slip soles are recommended for gyms and decks.

Is laundry or pressing service available?
Yes, all ships have self-service launderettes with irons and washing machines. Paid dry cleaning and express service are also available.

Are there special rules for children and teens?
Children have a more relaxed dress code, though neat attire is encouraged in restaurants. During Gala Evenings, young guests are advised to wear formal suits or dresses.

What if I don’t have formal wear?
There is a formal wear rental service on board where guests can rent tuxedos, tailcoats, bow ties, or evening gowns. Four Gates Group can also help arrange rentals before your cruise.

Tips from Four Gates Group:
– Bring an outfit in black & white – the most popular theme night.

Tenders and landing

What is a tender and when is it used?
A tender is a small boat that transports passengers from the ship to shore in ports where the vessel cannot dock directly. Cunard uses modern tender boats equipped with air conditioning, seating, and safety systems.

How does the tender boarding process work?
When the ship is anchored, passengers are invited to the Tender Embarkation Point indicated in the Daily Programme. Boarding is organized in groups – priority is given to Cunard shore excursion participants and Grill Suites guests. The ride to shore typically takes 10–20 minutes.

Do I need to register for a tender in advance?
No, if you are participating in an excursion, boarding is organized automatically. Independent guests receive tender tickets with assigned times, available at the Purser’s Desk or via the My Voyage app.

Are there health or mobility restrictions?
Yes, for safety reasons, tenders are not accessible to wheelchair users or passengers who cannot sit or stand independently. Crew members assist during boarding but cannot lift or carry passengers.

Can I return to the ship at any time?
Yes, tenders operate continuously between the ship and shore during port hours. The time of the last return trip is listed in the Daily Programme and announced over the PA system.

How can I find out the tender and return schedule?
The evening before arrival, guests receive detailed instructions in their staterooms, including the tender schedule, boarding times, and local information (currency, language, time zone).

What if I miss my tender?
If you miss your scheduled tender, you can take the next one. However, note that the last tender leaves strictly on time – the ship will not wait. Four Gates Group recommends returning to the ship at least one hour before departure.

What safety measures are in place during tender boarding?
Crew members assist guests when boarding and disembarking, and all tenders are equipped with life jackets and communication systems. Standing or moving around during transit is prohibited.

Can I bring bags, strollers, or cameras?
Yes, but items must be compact. Large suitcases, trolleys, and bulky items are not allowed. Photography is permitted as long as it does not disturb other guests.

How does disembarkation work in regular (pier) ports?
In ports where the ship docks at a pier, guests embark and disembark directly through the terminal. They pass passport control and go ashore without using tenders.

Tips from Four Gates Group:
– Bring sunglasses, water, and a hat – tender waiting areas may be sunny.
– Wear comfortable shoes with non-slip soles.
– Keep your tender ticket until you return to the ship.
– If exploring independently, confirm the last tender time with the crew.
– We recommend booking Cunard excursions – their participants disembark first.

Four Gates Group will help you prepare for disembarkation, explain which itineraries use tenders, and ensure maximum comfort during your time ashore.

Should guests bring documents or money on excursions?
It is recommended to carry a passport copy, stateroom card, and small cash in local currency for shopping and tips. Passports should be kept in the cabin safe.

Can I earn miles with a Cunard air package?
Yes, if the airline participates in a loyalty program and your fare class qualifies. Your frequent flyer number can be added during booking.

How can I get the flight confirmation and itinerary receipt?
Once full payment is received, Cunard sends the itinerary receipt via email 3-4 weeks before departure, detailing flight numbers, departure times, terminals, and contact information for customer service.

Can I make changes to the flight after booking?
Yes, but only before the ticket is issued. Once issued, any changes incur an airline penalty. Four Gates Group can help assess potential costs and modify your route with minimal loss.

What happens upon arrival at the destination airport?
In the arrivals hall, a Cunard representative meets guests with a sign and directs them to their transfer. Luggage is delivered separately to the port while you comfortably proceed to the ship.
